Conquering Cancer with Drugs from Nature's Medicine Cabinet

Many of our most potent anti-cancer therapies were discovered in or inspired by organisms that inhabit the seas, forests, and other habitats. It was not until the 1940s and after seeing the successful treatment of infectious diseases that scientists began to examine the potential of natural products to treat cancers. With new approaches to identifying anticancer compounds and new technologies for investigating the interaction of drug molecules with cancer cells, researchers supported by the National Institutes of Health and other agencies are bringing new drugs to the medicine cabinets of patients in need.
