Power of a Positive Playlist - Music and Memory Care
Show Notes

Discover the connection between music and memory care when Host John Chester talks with Stephane McGrady and Micah Grace from Southlake's Silverado Memory Care Community.

From the start of the day, Stephane walks through the way music supports clients throughout exercises they use to keep them as fulfilled as possible. John points out that the age of the music is important to keep them healthy and brains pliable. Simply using music they are completely familiar with can be limiting with little positive affect. What's best? Listen in to find out!

Silverado Southlake offers many ways to keep clients physically active, from seated bowling to dance. People who have trouble putting sentences together will begin to sing to music they've heard before, reconnecting them to the world around them. All levels of activity are integrated, so they can encourage each other and interact as much as possible. This approach, including the Cuban Shuffle, breathes fun and new life into the whole group.

John talks about Rhythm Based Music Therapy, and applauds Silverado for using this technique to add another layer of depth. Exercise balls are just one way clients can drum with their hands, for enjoyment - AND get therapeutic physical activity. What other musical instruments are helpful for memory care? Listen in to learn the difference between what it takes to keep them engaged, without over stimulating.

What kind of music, or generational language, is best for your loved one? It may not be what you think! This discussion will help you bond and communicate in ways you may not have considered.
