Rules tell us the right thing to do. But rules cannot turn us into the right thing to be. We can follow all the rules and still be full of hate or fear or shame. So rules are important, because they keep us from doing hurtful things. But they aren’t the most important, because they don’t heal our insides. We’re all sick on the inside, and we all need healing. That’s why Jesus came into the world, to heal us. And the way he heals us isn’t by giving us a bunch of rules. Instead, he gives us himself. Jesus is a healthy person. And he invites all of us sick people to come live in his health with him. That’s what baptism is. It’s going into the health of Jesus. It’s being dipped in Jesus, so that we are covered with his health and his life. Then we can follow the rules without thinking we need them to heal us. And when we break the rules, we can know that even the worst things we do can’t separate us from Jesus.
