Jousting on skateboards?
You must be talking about Thrashin'.

Thrashin' is about:
Corey (Josh Brolin) and his band of skater buddies sometimes make mischief, but they're more interested in girls and having fun on their boards than in getting into any real trouble. Notorious enemy crew the Daggers, led by Tommy Hook (Robert Rusler), get their kicks terrorizing the locals at Venice Beach. When Corey starts dating Tommy's kid sister, the Daggers are furious. The boys then take their beef to the "L.A. Massacre," a deadly skate race down a canyon road.

Josh Brolin shirtless. So if you want to get hot and steamy and talk about a skateboarding movie, you've found yourself with the right podcast destination. Have uncomfortable feelings about Draft Roland, but also here about a skateboard movie called Thrashing Let's get it started.

spk_0:   0:19
Correct. Open a cold box of wine. Or pour Something called on ice because it's the binge watchers podcas

spk_1:   0:52
you got to tell me why you nominated thrashing for our first extreme sports movie of the month and and set it off. No pressure. What? It's on you to carry this one on your shoulders.

spk_2:   1:05
Oh, shit. We'll fuck tha This is a movie I love. Um, you know, so funny is growing up. We before we had, like, a huge collection. We have, like, three VHS is we had e t. We had, like, a compilation of Warner Brothers cartoons. And we had thrashing because my brothers had it

spk_1:   1:28
itself, like, relentlessly, repeatedly. And they would take day to these rallies in the middle of the night where things were burning, but they would give him marshals to roast on these giant knows I'm not insinuating anything. I just want to make a really inappropriate joke with my buddy is actually trying to tell you a really good story, and I just want to throw him off his game completely by interrupting them. Continue.

spk_2:   1:54
No, uh, you know, I watch this movie a lot growing up. Um, you know, it's it's a disappearance. Stalder. For me, it has a great six soundtrack. It's got, like, one my favorite eighties movie tropes, which is like the eighties, uh, eighties punk, you know, or the daggers in this movie

spk_1:   2:13
did. I will say, this only makes you miss the eighties like the clothes, the lifestyles, the original lineup for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I mean, for a beauty like the movie includes the band playing at a skateboard club like in, like, Pasadena or something. Or the palaces, like they usually think the Pacific policy is used to have escaped parking. Buried. Understand, in this movie still exists. Um, and like, uh, it's just cool. I mean, maybe it's nostalgia, right? I mean, Dave and I went to school in this area like you could see some of the neighborhoods, like still look the same, like you see it go like, Oh, my God.

spk_2:   2:50
like a lot of Venice Looks the same at least So I remember

spk_1:   2:53
it's there's fucking PICO Boulevard right there. You know what I mean? This stuff like that you are the Ventura Freeway. Like I think at the end of the movie, they're just like in Ventura Young Hills like, But see, there's that element of it. Like if you if you spent any time in California, grew up there, You you can feel that while you're watching the movie or yeah, the whole these vibe, I mean to the sound, the sound Sandra, his killer, They have, like, young cannibals included

spk_2:   3:21
Debo Circle jerks.

spk_1:   3:24
Yeah, Circle jerks doing a great job. And, uh, you know, the music arrangement is incredible. Like I said, great job of a music arrangement and the Yeah, I mean, it makes you want the eighties. It really does. Like Mike, my kids hate whatever go Dad is that they say is the same 18 eighties. And they think I'm from the eighties. I'm really not from the eighties, but they think I was like an adult in the eighties because I watched so many eighties movies like a rock that I'm not really that old guys, I just Why? If there's a decade that I have to take him and say no other decade exists or like John, your job is to keep, um, you've been elected to, like, save movies for the future, and everything else is gonna go out of print. And OK, 1918 to 1989. We're good to go. You should, um I just like that. I mean, like, commercially viable stories. I was like, no rules. Like the I mean, the eighties gave us fucking ninja turtles on screen. You know, that's the future. You know, Robocop, like they're not stories a normal person would sit down to write. But, you know, mom, country was going through some shit back then. Countries going from shit now. And that ended with movies like the Russian. But Russian was like trying to cash in on, like, the skateboarder craze. It was like just getting started. Yeah, And the boy What's that?

spk_2:   4:46
No, go ahead.

spk_1:   4:47
I was gonna say, like, just like and the skaters that were around the time our like included in the movie Like Tony Alva? Yeah, like they're in the freaking movie. You know, the Z Boys from Dog Town, like half their crew is in this movie. And and that's the thing with Southern California in the eighties was about skateboarding. It's Alan, say, soft punk music cause it I don't even know howto described it. This is before Scott Scott hasn't really evolved yet in Southern California, but it's close, but it's just like punk ass in music and skateboarding and and And they got some beef with Thea the Break dancers there like all the Breakers man break. It's old school, whatever. Like you know, you can't break dance anymore here because we're on skateboards. And then, like you were talking about the daggers like they decided to look, let's make a street gang on a freaking skateboard,

spk_2:   5:39
right? Well, the, um, this movie feels very much like, uh, this time we'll watch. It feels very much like a skateboard version of Valley Girl, which is already like a take on Romeo and Juliet. Like, uh, I'm with this crew and you're with that crew and we can't be together, but you never

spk_1:   5:57
really. I didn't really think about the motifs for being removed, Juliet, but you're You're kind of like, right about that? Um, but I have a stupid name for the kids from the valley. They just literally say you're from the Valley. But I was also Yeah. There's also a disparity between wealth, I guess. Like, because the values have money and better skateboards. And the other kids were threat for total, for afters for it. And don't have money, like, because you like. Yeah, the woman's friend will piece of their drinks. And I think the guy built a ramp in his backyard. But there, the main group of kids that even kind of dorky, they call yourselves the ramp locals. You know what it was like? Okay, I guess that implies you're the only ones in the local area that have a ramp for people

spk_2:   6:39
to sleep, huh? Well, it is kind of funny, our protagonists, I mean, you always associate skateboarding with, like, hard punks or like tough kids. And our protagonists in this movie are kind of like white bread. I have, you know, is, like, kind of sit, not quite sissies, but, like, they're not that tough looking.

spk_1:   6:57
They're really the Orange County kids or something, right? Yeah. Yep. Um, there's a jealousy scene That's something. Yeah, there's a do. A rivalry between the main character was worse. Even come out rivalry and duel, um, between the main character and the leader of the daggers, who happens to be the big brother of the girl that the guy likes, Of course, right. And make sure we write in that conflict,

spk_2:   7:25
which they look nothing alike, like there's no way they could be brother and sister. But they are

spk_1:   7:30
was funny is like in the chemistry's off to like I read this thing, I'm in real life. Johnny Depp was dating that actress, and he was up for the lead in this movie. He was supposed to be in thrashing, and Josh Brolin was up for the part in 21 Jump Street, Johnny Marconi one Jump Street over Brolin and Roland got this over Johnny Depp. But the director of the movie, David Winters, Whatever pushed so hard for Johnny Depp that he actually because of thrashing because he didn't want Roland that after this movie, that director wrote into his contract that he gets final say on casting,

spk_2:   8:05
who, because

spk_1:   8:05
you didn't want rolling it all, and it goes back to what you said. Maybe he was like two yuppified, you know, to city folk, like he wasn't like he took all the arms with folks like for the white shots. He's doing okay on a board like that's the thing about the casting him and the other guy like they had to have some skating skills. So it looks like brawn. And, um, was his name Robert? What's the other guy's name? I looked up the actor's name and Harry forgot. I'm

spk_2:   8:30
so the main being bad guy. A dagger.

spk_1:   8:33
Yeah, because he's in.

spk_2:   8:35
He's on my mirror down the street to

spk_1:   8:37
Yeah, he's the bad guy. I mean, one for two he's in. Sometimes they come back again. He's in. He's in weird science.

spk_2:   8:45
Oh, yeah, you're

spk_1:   8:47
a couple things. He's his M o was kind of playing like, um, and the movie's name is Tommy Hook, and he's the leader of the days of the dagger group. But let me

spk_2:   9:00
Yeah, he was a friend, and I mean, the biggest thing is nightmare down the street to where he plays the friend to the main guy like you always think they're gonna hook up a couple times, But that's because that movie is,

spk_1:   9:15
um so in thrashing, though, Yeah, he's supposed to be like the older brother. You know, it's funny that he has a girlfriend here, and it seems like the girlfriend wants to hook up with Josh Brolin. Scary shirt. Your chemistry between Jeff Roland and the Thugs girlfriend, then. Oh, Robert Rustler was another eighties actor. Of course, Brawl is like a huge star now. He just played a nose and the marble moves. But remember, Hustler, he's still an actor. I looked up his credits. It seems like he's doing on TV lately. Doesn't independent movies produced a couple of zone things? But he's history stretches back, you know, eighties, nineties, whatever. Like you said, he's He's in one of the nightmare movies, and he's in a handful of eighties classics. They go, um, I thought about actually asking Russell, Come on the show.

spk_2:   10:05
Oh, yeah,

spk_1:   10:06
yeah, because like, he's a tourist. Lee cast is like The bad boy was also the bad guy. But what's funny in this movie, he's not that bad, like he's actually kind of sympathetic and like his group is like skateboarding through the boardwalk there in Venice. Like you said, And, like he pats a little kid on the head And do he takes the time to take, like, a class photo with all the gang members from the daggers. You know what I'm talking about? Seeing where it looks like an L. A weekly reporter takes a picture for them, and it's like, Oh, there's the yearbook photo, You know, like So they're not that bad. Their house kind of sucks, but they drink Lipton tea. I was looking at that like they have these things. Is that product placement? Like I don't know. They drink Lipton tea. They got minute meet apple juice. I guess they're doing all right, you know, um, but 20 Alva Who's the real skater? Real life use the one that plays the one that jumps off the porch.

spk_2:   10:56
Yeah, I'm

spk_1:   10:57
gonna get in a fight with drones.

spk_2:   10:58
Kind of got, like, dirty blond hair.

spk_1:   11:00
Yeah. Oh, I guess you could call brawling. Nice character's name. This character's name is court. Whoever, Um, I forget the friends names. They're kind of forgettable, but, um, you see one? Yup. You've seen them all. So yeah, um then obviously, in the stunts that a freeze frame where it says who directed the movie? And that's clearly not draft rolling in the other guy. And then when they have this massive downhill race like there's too many shots of the skateboarders and you're just like, Oh, wow, that looks nothing like a wrestler and Roland a little coming down, you know, even duties. What's crazy is the stuff of just skateboarders, like they're just on their skateboards. I was like, It's crazy to think that humans could put a a pair of wheels on a board and then decide to go down a hill like 60 miles an hour and call it a sport, turn it into the sport and then actually be willing to do it because it seems reckless and extreme. And, uh, you know, um, I don't know. I mean, but I guess you feel immortal between the ages of 12 and 19 you kind of feel like you can't be stopped by anything, right? And maybe maybe that's the testosterone thing. I don't know, but I think it may not be limited to the male monkeys of the species and maybe the higher species that just when you're young, you're just like I can. I'm immortal. I think it hurt me, You know, until you get really, really hurt. I don't know where it is. Um, what

spk_2:   12:33
happens, happens. I What? I was just about to say my back almost went out. Just moving shit this weekend. So, you know,

spk_1:   12:44
they pulled back out taking a soda out of the fridge. Yeah, well, I sat down to watch the rest of you know, um, no, actually, this is always hard to find. I don't have a link for anybody to watch it because I had to get Kong past. But I know everybody doesn't have cable since forever these days. So where they're gonna find it?

spk_2:   13:03
This is another one of those will You can link to the blue Ray.

spk_1:   13:06
Well, I don't know. Can you?

spk_2:   13:09
I suppose I have a blue ray, but it's still in print.

spk_1:   13:13

spk_2:   14:03
Oh, no. Gunning for me?

spk_1:   14:07
No. Uh, well, you just told me you're worthless. You're gonna throw your back out. Do doing nothing doing like oh, man. Reset my microphone. Threw my back out. Um, let's see what kind of movies trashing like today. Like a really t was. Maybe. Look, there really aren't any skater movies. Really?

spk_2:   14:29
No, not that I can think of.

spk_1:   14:32
It's a cultural thing, I guess. Remember, Tony Hot made a bunch of video games will escape party. Did you ever play those?

spk_2:   14:38
Um, yeah. I mean, when I was at a friend's house, but uh,

spk_1:   14:42
so one for a lot of people actually Skate boarding the plane, skateboard video games. But then I think people got back into skateboarding like I know it's a big deal for my brother. My brother's waiting had multiple decks, would watch, like the old skateboarding tapes on VHS. You know, that used to pass around like skateboarding video tapes. That's how the jackass guys got started to. I think like that. You passed around these tapes like an assistant and MTV sought. They've got them in there to do stunts in the show when they brought in Knoxville to be the celebrity guy, like whatever seeing some of the old tapes. But if you're going back to Washington tape man, that's going

spk_0:   15:22
back a while.

spk_2:   15:24
Yeah, there was a big skater culture thing with, like, skate videos. Yeah, like the chest is you go to skate shops and buy like step videos. That's

spk_1:   15:33
still going on because, like some of these videos have not been digitally transferred like they don't want to get some of these videos that they talk about the classical ones like Volume three of like, glove off ration like you can't you can't get it anywhere. Transverse lying three. You got to go to the story like, Oh, there's a VHS. Oh, my God. And then you got to go toe like your I don't know. You're like Piccoli wiggle

spk_2:   15:54
never

spk_1:   15:55
secondhand store and find, like, a VHS player that actually still works. You have people like, Oh, man, it's a VCR. So now you spent like Adam. Um, I don't know how much money you've spent between the VCR that might work and the video that you found, but I do love finding things on video. Like Dave. FBI was visiting date one time he took me to the store were like, looking at all these movies. Remember that?

spk_2:   16:19
Yeah. S o A VCR. Yeah.

spk_1:   16:23
What do you

spk_2:   16:23
plan to have? A laser disc player? It is a

spk_1:   16:26
real common story. I think he likes that classic porn, you know.

spk_2:   16:29
Oh, yeah.

spk_1:   16:30
But again, you could only get it on the tapes. It doesn't exist. Damn. Yeah. Again, like, uh, like I said, you had a case just went on your shoulders because I don't have too much to say about fashion, all right? I don't know what else to say about it.

spk_2:   16:54
Well, I just found out the girl who played Christie died. What? So if there is that what? Yes, you die, like, two years ago.

spk_1:   17:01
Bullshit. She's the main girl, right? Yeah, yeah. What happened?

spk_2:   17:07
I don't know. I just found out she just died

spk_1:   17:17
not laughing people because she died way sound ill prepared. And David doesn't know why she died. It just happened to pop up on his phone. And I am Devi that she's dead

spk_2:   17:30
peacefully in her sleep at 52

spk_1:   17:32
peacefully in your sleep. Every really die peacefully in her sleep.

spk_2:   17:36
Yeah. 90 year olds

spk_1:   17:39
wants to be 90. Do you want to be nine? Well,

spk_2:   17:42
by the time we get up there with modern medicine, I mean, it may not be that bad.

spk_1:   17:46
Speaking of 90 year old Kirk Douglas, recently, Die was in his nineties.

spk_2:   17:53
No, he's like 100 and three.

spk_1:   17:54
Oh, really? Okay. Pass the nineties. You did not leave a dime for a son. Michael Douglas. Give it all the charity.

spk_2:   18:02
Good for him. Michael Douglas has his own fortune.

spk_1:   18:05
Well, that's what I wonder. Do you think they had the conversation like Listen, son, we've both done well. You don't need this. I'm gonna give it away. Or son, I fucking hate your guts. You're not getting a goddamn thing. Good luck to you.

spk_2:   18:21
My understanding is they They had a pretty safe, pretty solid relationship. I don't know.

spk_1:   18:26
I guess they produced a couple movies together. Yeah. Now I think they probably good relationship to the end.

spk_2:   18:34
Yeah, I think so. I

spk_1:   18:36
don't know, but Michael and his son get along that well, like another son wrote Like a tell after going to rehab.

spk_2:   18:43
Yeah, They say sons had his troubles with drug problems.

spk_1:   18:47
Yeah, I also reached out to Rob. I think his name is Dire Deck. Whatever. The guy who does ridiculousness

spk_2:   18:53
rub. Yeah,

spk_1:   18:55
we're doing all these extreme sports for this month. So I was like, let me get the skaters on the show like me. And yes, like a hello thing, whatever. Like I was talking to this people on the web site, but the email that keeps getting rejected like, oh, man, they need the update, their freaking work for us. Um, I just everything I do is contact like MTV and be like you. You know, watchers to help you make fun of Internet videos. You will do your show. You know, one hand shakes the other, as they say, Yeah, I can't see them making a skateboard for you these days. Except for you're a hell. Maybe they happen to be skaters because we takes place in the nineties, and it's literally called mid nineties. But I don't know if I guess skater culture must have been a part of his life growing up.

spk_2:   19:41
Well, yeah. I mean, have you seen it?

spk_1:   19:44
No, not yet.

spk_2:   19:45
It's, um actually, it's not bad. I saw it last year or whatever. It came out. Um, it's Ah, it's very much, um, his version of the movie kids. Mmm. Said not is re P. And, uh, he even shot it like four by three. Or like TV aspect. So that's not even widescreen. That's weird. Yeah, that's been like, a thing that a lot of ah movies have been doing lately. Have noticed

spk_1:   20:13
going to 43

spk_2:   20:15
Mmm. Why? Just a stylistic choice

spk_1:   20:20
after work that up. I don't know why that's a song choice of anybody. You want to look like a chart on TV. I mean, if they wanted to look like old film. There was a one, a 185 which wasn't for three. He was blown up to 43 But to choose the shooting and square, it makes no sense. Unless what you gonna release your video on instagram?

spk_2:   20:41
Well, I mean, it depends on because sometimes it makes things that, for instance, the lighthouse just did that. But it it worked for that movie. Actually, they even shot in something slimmer, something like 11 19 which is, like, even slimmer. So I kind of like it looks very tall, especially if you see it in a movie theater. If you see it at home on a screen, it kind of loses something. But I saw the lighthouse in the theaters, and it does look impressive.

spk_1:   21:11
Doesn't mermaid sex look,

spk_2:   21:14
Hey, uh, squish

spk_1:   21:17
it. That's how you know it's an artful That's the only test. The only way to indicate that it's an art film is the weird sexing. I'm pretty sure that's when every art film requires

spk_2:   21:33
and Willem Dafoe farting a lot.

spk_1:   21:36
Well, well, the White House folks don't watch it. Yeah, let's tell where this one talking about willing to fool passing Guess?

spk_2:   21:51
Yeah, I think we would have talked about that on the wall. The heart episode, but

spk_1:   21:55
oh, really? Well, he's not flatulence in that movie.

spk_2:   21:58
No, this fucked up teeth. Yeah.

spk_1:   22:03
Yeah, And he has a weird face anyway, so I really screwed up teeth. It's kind of like insult to injury.

spk_0:   22:13
Ah.
