What happens when a whirlwind reality TV romance meets the sobering winds of real life? Gerry Turner and Teresa Nist found out the hard way. Their much-publicized union on "The Golden Bachelor" came to an unexpected halt, leaving fans and romantics alike grappling with the notion of love later in life. This episode peels back the curtain on their highly televised wedding and the subsequent unraveling of their relationship, exploring the pressures that come with merging established lives and the wisdom of taking time to nurture new commitments. With both Gerry and Teresa coming from long marriages to their high school sweethearts and then facing the world anew as widows, their story serves as a poignant reflection on the complexities of finding love after loss.

As we turn the page, Teresa Nist may yet shine in the role of the Golden Bachelorette, sparking discussions on the nuances of public courtship and fresh starts. With a blend of empathy and insight, I navigate the conversation around Teresa's potential new journey, the curious intricacies of modern dating, and the resilient quest for companionship under the scrutinizing gaze of the public. Meanwhile, "Wise Words from SJ" will soon offer a fresh bouquet of thoughtful discussions. Join me in a heartfelt dialogue about self-love, the art of compromise, and embracing the role one plays within a partnership. Your reflections are welcomed as we build a community that values and celebrates love in all its stages.

MORNIN BITCHES PODCAST

Speaker 1:

far between lately, but I will be leaving it soon to go to a new podcast called Wise Words from SJ. We'll be on all different channels, venues, so I just thought I would let you know that. But today we're going to read about the Honeymoon's Over for Golden Bachelor Duo, written by Greg Braxton and the Times. Okay, who didn't love watching the Golden Bachelor? In fact, I even met the Golden Bachelor when, the week before everything was opening up, the incredible Gary, you know, was at Mel's Diner on Sunset Boulevard with a pre-opening to the Golden Bachelor. He told me he was so happy Doesn't my face look like I'm happy? He said to you, tiktok bubby, yes, it did. However, what can I say? Things happen, relationships end, and I was very sad to hear about it and read about it. So let's read about it.

Speaker 1:

The Golden Bachelor star, gary Turner, was overjoyed when he proposed to financial services professional Teresa Nist, putting a fairy tale stamp on his journey to find love again at age 72. The couple rushed to get married, eager to start their new life together. Okay, I would have waited myself. Wait, wait you, just you. Their new life together Okay, I would have waited myself, wait, wait, you just, you know, got together. Wait a few months to see if you can. You know, navigate everything. But no, but the fairy tale is over. Just more than three months After their sprint to the altar and a gala ceremony televised live on ABC, the widower and his new bride are breaking up.

Speaker 1:

The couple announced the bombshell during an emotional interview Friday on Good Morning America. While maintaining that they still loved and cherished each other, they said they realized that the obstacles of moving forward as husband and wife were too daunting. After a number of heart-to-heart conversations, we'd come to the conclusion that it's probably time to dissolve our marriage. They didn't even give it time. What's going on, turner said. They also said they were nervous about how fans would react to the news. Sad, I'm very sad over the whole thing. Of course and I'm a fan Much of the decision was linked to the inability to decide how to merge their lives. One challenge Ho-hum. Nist lives in New Jersey, while Turner is from Indiana. They had hoped to compromise by moving to South Carolina, but they could never reach an agreement. Oh please, you have your house in Jersey. You could have a long distance marriage. What's wrong with that? Is what I'm saying. The thing that strikes me the most has been how dedicated we are to our families. Turner said we just feel like it's the best for the happiness of both of us to live apart. The announcement marks a stunning epilogue to the wildly successful launch of the Golden Bachelor, a spinoff of the Bachelor reality franchise.

Speaker 1:

The show's popularity, which extended beyond the core Bachelor Nation fan base, was largely credited to Turner's natural warmth and charisma, which transformed the retired restaurateur into a national celebrity. Thank you, maybe that's what he wanted to be all along, I'm just saying. Episode showing Turner dating a pool of 22 women inspired viewing parties of retirement homes and senior centers across the nation. And while Turner's primary goal was to find a life partner, he also wanted to convey a message of hope to older viewers that they should never give up on finding romance and love. I found love and romance at 55 with my husband. I feel we accomplished something very meaningful and historic, please, turner told the Times in November because of how strong the women were and how much I enjoyed the journey. The message of hope that our age, we're still meaningful and we can still find love, came out so strongly. That is the part of history that I hope carries on. Teresa and I have gotten so many letters from people who have said we watched you on the show and we have developed so much confidence that we are going out there and dating.

Speaker 1:

As part of the connection between Turner and NIST were their similar personal histories. Both were married for 40 years to their high school sweethearts. Turner's wife, toni, died of a bacterial infection. Nist's husband, billy, died of kidney failure. Both said they had not been involved in a serious relationship since their spouses had died. In the season finale, turner chose NIST over finalist Leslie Fima as his bride-to-be, holding hands as they face each other in a hushed, lush field. They face each other in a hush, lush field Hush field, it should have been. Turner told Nist you're not the right person for me to live with, pausing dramatically before declaring you're the person I can't live without For three months. Let me tell you. In the After the Final Rose segment of the November finale, the couple declared that they would get married in January. The lavish ceremony was held at La Quinta Resort and Club and was attended by hundreds of people, including several alumni of the Bachelor franchise. The reception featured Journey's Don't Stop Believin', which the couple adopted as their song Please.

Speaker 1:

In this interview with the Times after the finale. Turner said the two were very close to figuring out how they would blend their lives For the last couple of years. At Christmas time my family and I would talk about the fall chores at the lake house were getting too much for me to handle by myself. He said I had identified Charleston, south Carolina, as a place I could possibly move to and live In conversations near the end of my journey. Teresa talked about having a son and three grandsons in the Charleston area. All of a sudden the possible obstacle of geography melted away. Maybe it's fate that really helped us in the department, but it really lifted a burden of both of us on what that compromise would be. Although the inaugural season of the Golden Bachelor is not a happy ending, you think Plans are still moving forward for the franchise's launch of the Golden Bachelorette, with the announcement of its star forthcoming.

Speaker 1:

Oh, and I just read in the paper today. Possibly they're thinking of Teresa Nist for the Golden Bachelorette. I don't know. I just am very sad about the whole thing and I was hoping things would work out for them. He's I don't know. There was something about him.

Speaker 1:

A lot of people said that there was something weird. I just don't know she's a very sweet woman. So you know who would ride in a car on the first date in the wind, with no lights on the car and your hair blowing everywhere. Of course I don't have to worry because I have short, curly hair. You just have to run my hands through it or a rake. We'll figure that one out.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, I just thought I would read that it's very sad. Have fun things to say about. You know everything else that's happening today. So you know, instead of all the heavy duty political stuff, it was sad for me so soon I'll be doing a different podcast called Wise Words from SJ, and the wise words I have to leave you with today are make sure you know what side of the bed you're sleeping on. Compromise, be willing. Willingness is the key here. I just don't think they were willing to uproot their lives to live with each other. So that's my opinion, but I could be wrong. Let me know what you think. You could reach out to me on TikTok, tiktok, bubby, facebook, whatever. And if nobody told you they love you today, I love you because you're you, love yourself. Bye.
