REVIVAL -- PSALM 85
Nov 17, 2019

This Psalm speaks about a time of revival. It was written while God's people were still being chastened, but in faith, it looks forward to revival and its blessings. Israel desired revival and looked forward to it as if it had already come. They had, no doubt, heard the priests speak of God's promise of revival and blessing in II Chronicles 7:14. In revival they could look forward to the enjoyment of God's blessings once again. Our English word "revival" comes from 2 Latin words: "Re" = again and "Vivo" = to live. Someone said revival is "A new beginning of obedience to God . . . " "Revival" is, primarily, an Old Testament word. The word in the New Testament is "repent." In Revelation 2:5 the Lord told the church at Ephesus to "Remember, repent, and return." "Repent" means "turn around." It speaks of a change of direction." Dr. Vance Havner once said of the Lord's churches, "We are so subnormal, that if we ever became normal, we'd be thought abnormal." He also said, "We have just about rededicated ourselves to death." What is really needed among God's people today is true repentance and seeking God's forgiveness for our apathy and failures of Him concerning His Word and work. As God's people in the days of Israel, may we who are His people and one of His churches today consider what He said to them (and us) in that wonderful verse about revival (II Chronicles 7:14) and His promised blessings. Revival is not large crowds, great preaching, or even people being converted. (Where genuine
revival exists, people are usually converted, but in the true sense of the word, revival is not the salvation of the lost.) Revival is a deep repentance, a breaking down of heart, a
getting down in the dust before God, with deep humility and a forsaking of sin. Revival in the spiritual realm is to love Jesus Christ in a new and significant way, to regain spiritual consciousness and to renew our "honeymoon love" for Him. So, we see:

  I.GOD'S PRESCRIPTION FOR REVIVAL.
 II.GOD'S PROMISE FOR REVIVAL.
