I just got back from a two-week trip to Australia. I spent the second week in Port Douglas, and it’s one of the most treacherous places I have ever been. There are crocodiles in the ocean, so you’re not supposed to go near it at dawn or dusk because you could get eaten.
Port Douglas is at the Great Barrier Reef, so me and my sister decided to go scuba diving. Our guide taught us all the skills we needed, so we jumped in the water and used a breathing apparatus for the first time. We first had to demonstrate the skills we were taught, but the very first time I went under, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I wasn’t used to it and got kind of panicked. I worried if I’d be able to go any deeper, but after slowly adjusting, I was fine. It was magical down there. Those skills that were very difficult the first time I had done them became totally natural to me.
The first time we practice skills, they seem really difficult and they can even be panic-inducing. That’s just because they’re new. If we learn these skills, they can give us entry to a whole new world. If you want to go into business, you need to develop these skills.
The first skill is copywriting. It’s not about being a good writer; it’s about speaking conversationally and understanding your market. You have to speak your customer’s language.
Skill number two is sales. That word scares some people off, but whether you know it or not, everything in life is about sales. Contrary to what some people think, this does not mean forcing someone to buy from you.
The third skill is funnels. They are a series of steps we take someone through that converts them from a stranger into a paying client. It’s about finding one thing that works for a specific group of people and doing that thing over and over again until you become the best in the world at it.
If you master these skills, you’re going to open up a whole new world and it’s going to be completely worth it.
