Show Notes

Sometimes I experience deafness when it comes to advice from people that are further ahead of me. The advice just doesn’t mean anything to me, and it’s not until I look back and see my struggles that I finally understand what they were saying. Without that perspective, it can be hard to understand the advice we get.

Each year, I look back and see what lessons I learned so I don’t make the same mistakes. Let’s walk through 19 things I learned last year.

1. If you’re already having success, it’s not about how hard you work; it’s how much unique value you are bringing to the marketplace.

2. There are ebbs and flows that are out of your control. Ride the wave instead of being mad that it exists.

3. Don’t assume that growth will always be at the same pace.

4. Education and mentorship are some of the most important activities in a business.

5. Longevity is cooler than maximizing revenue and profits.

6. There are only a few things that make a difference in a business.

7. Read more. This goes along with taking the time to think.

8. Personal growth translates to business growth, and the same goes for shortcomings.

9. Find something to win at outside of business.

10. Money doesn’t change your personal relationships. They require just as much effort.

11. Money does reduce stress as long as you are building systems.

12. There’s a cost to everything. Simplify your life.

13. There’s no reason you can’t do the things you want to do right now. You just have to pay the price.

14. Skills and leadership beat everything else, as always.

15. Execution is so much more important and so much harder than ideas.

16. We claim to understand more about ourselves than we actually know.

17. Learn from all subjects and all industries.

18. Do cool projects with cool people.

19. The things that take the longest to do are the most rewarding.

These are the lessons I’ve learned, and I hope I can internalize these lessons moving forward.
