The novel goes back and forth between their childhood and 1997, after Lex learns that her younger sister has led a commune in what appears to be a cult suicide. The story is set against a background of family involvement with various communes, including Lomaland, a Theosophical community that thrived in San Diego from the 1890s through World War Two. |
