G01-E04 - THE HERMIT
SUMMARY
Storyline is about the arrival in New London of GANDER
(DAVID Kosciolek) age 33 on the 6th of May 2052 (23 years
before the main Angel and May series) and the slow climb
up the slippery pole of power in the Bencubbin. This
first instalment details the time up to his/her purchase
of the Retrograde Inn from the Bencubbin Mafia.
COBO and GANDER visit container city where COBO's old
cell mate (CROUP) is hiding he explains he broke into a
bank and nicked some diamonds. They turned out to be
owned by the Italian mob. The diamonds are hidden in the
kitchens of the Retrograde which coincidently now owned
by the same mob.
Vincent Gambino hears of CROUPERS escape and thinks he is
still in container city. He dispatches his henchmen to
find CROUPIER and bring him back for interrogation.
GANDER and COBO travel back to Black Bears place, only to
find its been damaged by a supposed electrical fault.
However they all know its a warning sign, from the mob.
COBO asks BEAR to ignore the warning and put up CROUPIER
by the end of the day before he can be winkled out by the
Gambino's henchmen searching in container city. BEAR
reluctantly agrees.
After dispatching JACINTA and COSTAS to get CROUPIER back
to BEARS, GANDER and COBO discuss the next move. COBO
decides to go into the in and confront VINCENT. GANDER
thinks he is mad but lets him go.
COBO visits VINCENT in the Retrograde offers the stones
and requests more time. VINCENT says he has 24 hours and
throws him out.
GANDER, CROUPIER and COBO discuss the visit to VINCENT
and their the very short timeline. COBO asks CROUPIER
(In disguise) to nick some passes off of utility personal
and to also steal a van. GANDER and COBO head off to a
'Sweet shop'
INT. CONTAINER CITY - THE STORY
COBO and GANDER visit container city where COBO's old
cell mate (CROUP) is hiding he explains he broke into a
bank and nicked some diamonds. They turned out to be
owned by the Italian mob. The diamonds are hidden in the
kitchens of the Retrograde.
COBO
DAVID stay close, don't fall
behind. You know what happens to
the weakest members of the herd?
GANDER
COBO you're not helping, you're
very negative.
COBO
Realistic dear boy, realistic.
Quick, in here!
GANDER
Under there?
COBO
Yes, and stop buggering around!
Get in, before you're seen.
GANDER
It stinks in here!
COBO
Yes it does, but stop moaning.
Now, you're going to meet a
friend. Please don't judge this
book by the cover, he doesn't look
his best at the moment. He needs
to temporarily keep a low profile
until I make arrangements and sort
his disguise.
GANDER
How does this relate to the grift?
COBO
Its the core of the grift. It
wouldn't be happening without this
fellow. So play nice. He is an
old mate. We spent a couple of
terms together.
GANDER
What in boarding school?
COBO
Stop playing dumb, it doesn't
become you, and before you ask, I
did go to school, and I do have a
doctorate.
GANDER
Oh really! I didn't know there was
a university of grifting!
COBO
Sarcasm, the lowest for of wit!
However in a sense you're correct,
we shared accommodation at her
majesties pleasure. Now shut up
and let me do the correct knock
otherwise I'll get a gun blast!
CODED DOOR KNOCK ON
METAL
COBO
CROUP, come on, let us in. It
stinks out here. I know you're in
there, and I know you know its me,
so open the bloody door!
METALLIC SQUEEK AS
DOOR OPENS A SMALL
AMOUNT
CROUPIER
I told you to come alone, who the
hell is this?
COBO
CROUP you're getting paranoid.
This is DAVID KOSCIOLEK, he is on
the crew, so lighten up.
CROUPIER
Lighten up, I'm being hunted by
the mob, paranoid is what has kept
me alive so far!
COBO
You make a good point. Anyway,
how you doing in here?
CROUPIER
How does you think I'm doing, its
cold and it stinks and I really
need a shower.
COBO
Well, I have good news. I have
your disguise ready, and BEAR has
reserved a room. Oh and before you
ask, it has a shower!
CROUPIER
Shit, its about time!
COBO
I had to find a decent disguise
and check the route, so stop
whining will you!
CROUPIER
Sorry, this shit hole is getting
to me!
COBO
DAVID, this is Cool Hand CROUPIER,
he is currently doing a fifteen
stretch. CROUP I thought you might
appreciate a beer and a scotch
egg, its in my back pack.
CROUPIER
Oh, thank heavens, I'm starving!
Next time I break out, its to a
five star hotel. This hiding in a
rat hole, is demeaning!
GANDER
Its a good point. MILTON, why is
your friend hiding in this rat
hole?
COBO
To buy preparation time dear boy.
Certain people have a real dislike
for my friend.
GANDER
But why here?
COBO
I need to get the disguise ready,
Good disguises have to be custom
made. CROUP tell GANDER how you
got out!
CROUPIER
It was inspired really! You see
there was this cost cutting
initiative at the, (pause)
"previous lodgings". They thought
that the lags could sort mail,
they could pay them nothing and
save a load of cash.
That sort of thing. Anyway to cut
a long story short I got a crate
and posted myself to this old safe
house. I had MILTON pose as the
owner to pick it up.
GANDER
Why did you contact MILTON?
CROUPIER
He was the most accomplished
grifter I met in jail, and the
nature of the problem seemed to
require his specialised skills.
GANDER
If he was so smart how come he was
banged up?
CROUPIER
Yes, well you might have a point,
but I like him!
COBO
Thank you CROUP I appreciate that!
CROUPIER
So show me how I get this beard
thing on.
COBO
Like this and this! Hold on let me
do it!
CROUPIER
DAVID, has my friend, been quoting
poetry at you?
GANDER
Yes, unfortunately!
CROUPIER
(Laughter) My sympathies. It's a
good sign though. It means he
likes you! You try sharing a cell
with him, solitary was a blessed
relief.
GANDER
Yes I can imagine!
COBO
Look you two clunk heads, without
me you would still wandering
around the Bencubbin. CROUP stay
still, this wig is tricky.
CROUPIER
MILTON, so how much does, DAVID
know.
COBO
Not much, at this stage but I can
vouch for him. Besides he has a
good reason to despise the mark,
even more so than you CROUP. Now
let me take a look. Turn around!
Yes I think that will do, at least
until we get to BEARS.
GANDER
So what's the story? Classic
theft?
CROUPIER
Seemed less like a classic from my
end, but whatever! Like I said I
went down for this job in 2048.
The bank had a water tight,
perimeter, but we had a unique
advantage. It was actually a
doodle because we had help from an
insider. Natalie was her name, she
was beautiful, her lips were like
sink plungers.
GANDER
Jeez, really?
COBO
CROUP, cut the romance and focus
on the technical details.
CROUPIER
Sorry MILTON, its been a long
time! Let me see, where was I? Oh
yes, we blasted our way into the
vault and started sacking the
depository boxes. Natalie gave a
steer towards this one box.
GANDER
Why?
CROUPIER
I never found out, perhaps she had
seen the clients.
GANDER
What was in it?
CROUPIER
Diamonds, lots of them, must have
been a hundred, high carat, high
quality.
You would think we would be home
and dry, but fate didn't smile on
us. Job went down hill from
there. Natalie lost her bottle
and grassed us up. So we all
split, went our own ways. Next
thing I know is that the team is
all being picked off one by one.
Dodder was the first, they found
him with a fence post stuck
through his chest. Ronny the slim
was next, got him with a sniper.
One by one, like clockwork they
all went down. The cops got most
of the cash, but I still had the
sparklers. So I panicked and hid
them.
GANDER
Where?
COBO
Patience DAVID, patience, this is
the good bit!
CROUPIER
Well, I was hiding out in an old
pub at the time called the
Retrograde. It was run by a nice
chap and the food was good.
GANDER
Ah, I see the link!
CROUPIER
I popped down to the kitchens
after hours and dropped them in an
old service space behind the wall.
GANDER
Wouldn't they just be made of
plasterboard. Not much security
there.
COBO
Normally, but that place is
special. Do you know how thick
the skin of the Retrograde is?
GANDER
No, do I look like a builder?
COBO
No, I think the makeup might
indicate otherwise! Let me
explain, the Retrograde is not
what it appears to be.
When they were constructing New
London they left holes in the
habitat skin so that they could
bring in the fitments, soil,
biological matter, interior etc.
This required huge airlocks in the
sides. What you see as the
Retrograde, is built over one of
the construction locks. In fact
the whole Retrograde block is a
fill for a single construction
lock. Its huge! It goes down
seventeen levels, most just
abandoned. Its all made of
military spec carbonium steel.
Didn't you notice the walls of
that place when we cased the
joint?
GANDER
So that's why it looks like an
armadillo had sex with a tank!
COBO
Exactly!
CROUPIER
Even the kitchen walls are high
grade steels, I only managed to
chuck the package in because they
had the panels off for
maintenance.
GANDER
I don't get it, why is this
retrieval so problematic? Why are
you hiding here?
COBO
You tell him CROUP.
CROUPIER
The bank we turned over was the
local branch of the "Astro de
Sacella". It turned out that the
diamonds belonged to a very
important client of theirs, who
happened to have nicked them from
another bank the year before.
GANDER
Let me guess, they have an Italian
name and operate a family
business.
COBO
I told you he was bright!
GANDER
It was the Gambino family, wasn't
it.
COBO
You got it in one!
GANDER
So are any members of your
original gang around?
CROUPIER
Sadly No! All but two have been
killed by the Gambino's, usually
just after they got out. One
escaped because he changed his
identity in time and went into
hiding, and me of course! They
were biding their time, they need
to grab me and find out where the
jewels were stashed. That's why
I'm still alive! You can't torture
a dead man.
GANDER
Wont they know you're out?
CROUPIER
Absolutely, they had guards
watching me! Thing is, even if I
had stayed, its my parole next
week. There'd be two guys with
lumpy jackets waiting outside.
This way I elope, you help me
recover the diamonds. Then I
scarper back to earth and live a
long and happy life in luxury.
GANDER
Sounds unlikely to me. They would
find you eventually!
COBO
I agree, that is why you need me.
I have a plan!
GANDER
Well not to state the obvious yet
again but this job sounds
implausible. You want to break
back into the Retrograde under the
noses of the Gambino's the most
vicious mob in the Bencubbin, to
steal back their own Diamonds from
inside a hardened steel bulkhead,
and walk out to your freedom!
Not to mention the multiple
security agencies that have
camera's and operatives outside
just waiting to get in and arrest
everyone.
COBO
Exactly!
CROUPIER
MILTON I think what we have here
is a failure to communicate! There
is more than twenty million in
diamonds just waiting for us!
COBO
Exactly CROUP, but its not twenty
million, its more like five after
fencing. Then we have to live to
spend it. No CROUP, the real
failure is that young DAVID does
not understand the irresistible
power of the well constructed long
con! However like I say I have a
plan!
INT. RETROGRADE SMALL BAR - MOVE NUMBER ONE
Vincent Gambino hears of CROUPERS escape and thinks he is
still in container city. He dispatches his henchmen to
find CROUPIER and bring him back for interrogation.
VINCENT
That's enough Cindy, you need to
improve you inversions! Now fuck
off! Shut that noisy shit off!
THUG ONE
Boss, that slime ball CROUPIER has
escaped.
VINCENT
What the f**. How, we had two
guards watching him, are you
telling me that I wasted my cash?
THUG ONE
No boss, he was very devious!
VINCENT
Well of course he was you dullard.
He was a crook and a con man, what
did you expect! How did he get
out?
THUG ONE
He posted himself!
VINCENT
What!
THUG ONE
Yes he made a crate and then
managed to hide in the post room
and get himself posted out!
VINCENT
Sometimes I really wonder about
the authorities in this shit hole!
Make sure the guards understand we
want our cash back, but don't kill
them, just rough them up! So what
was the address he posted himself
too?
THUG ONE
Somewhere in container city. We
went over, but the place was a
wreck with no one home. You know
what that shit hole is like! We
couldn't find him!
VINCENT
F** I hate that container city, it
consumes our resources but
delivers very little return. He
is probably still rotting there.
Its perfect for a hideaway. Get
Kevin, he was from container city.
Go back, tear the place apart and
find him! Oh and make sure he is
able to talk afterward, no
killing, yet! I have some
questions! Also find out who he
bunked with in jail, we might be
able take that angle. Rats always
go back to their original nest!
THUG ONE
Yes, boss but what if we still
can't find him?
VINCENT
Well, then its plan B, which is to
watch his associates and wait for
him to make the next move.
INT. BLACK BEARS BUNK HOUSE - CLOSING IN
GANDER and COBO travel back to Black Bears place, only to
find its been damaged by a supposed electrical fault.
However they all know its a warning sign, from the mob.
COBO asks BEAR to ignore the mob warning and bunk
CROUPIER by the end of the day. BEAR reluctantly agrees.
GANDER
OK COBO, what the next move?
COBO
Well, I'm going to secure a place
for CROUPIER at BEARS, once that
is done we move him, in disguise
of course.
GANDER
Why doesn't he just come with us
now?
COBO
Well, for one thing, we will be
watched by the mob, maybe not in
container city but defiantly in
the Bencubbin. If I was them, the
first thing I would do is figure
out all the accomplices and watch
them, cover all the bases.
GANDER
Yeah I can see that would make
sense. Shit! Its tricky.
COBO
Yes it is, but we are the more
accomplished tricksters, right?
GANDER
Possibly!
DISTANT SIRENS
GETTING LOUDER
GANDER
Nearly home! Shit I can't believe
I think of BEAR's as home, I must
be acclimatising! COBO How long
are we going to leave CROUPIER
there? He was getting fairly
twitchy!
COBO
Not long, I'll try and move him as
soon as I can, possibly today.
What the f** is going on sounds
like the end of the world!
GANDER
(Sniffing), Is something burning?
COBO
Shit!, oh, crap its BEAR's, I hope
he is OK. Jeez, they moved fast.
BEAR is sitting outside his hostel, with smoke coming out
of a burnt out entry hall.
GANDER
BEAR what happened? Are you OK?
BEAR
I don't get it, I was only gone
for twenty minutes, went to the
cash and carry for my chewing
tobacco.
GANDER
Urghh, you like that stuff!
BEAR
Calms me down, helps me think.
Got back and the whole entryway
was on fire.
GANDER
Do you know the cause!
(interrupted by COBO)
COBO
BEAR don't worry, These things
happen BEAR, could be faulty
electrical sockets, rats chewing
through cables, faulty appliances,
that sort of thing. You're just
lucky you weren't inside.
GANDER
Have you upset anybody!
COBO
Don't ask stupid questions David!
BEAR
No, not that I know. I paid my
protection. What the hell am I
paying them for? This isn't
something related to you
Earthworm, is it?
GANDER
How could it be, I've just
arrived. I haven't had time to
piss anyone off.
BEAR
Don't be too sure. You've not
been to that Retrograde Inn,
asking questions, have you?
COBO
Leave him alone BEAR, its
something else. Something else to
do with me! CROUPIERS out, they're
after him!
BEAR
Oh crap, that conniving safe
cracker! Do you think they have
figured out who I am?
COBO
No! Otherwise you'd be in the
Retrograde, being tortured! No,
its definitely me, they know I did
jail time and shared a cell with
him. Its a warning to me. Its a
good thing you paid your dues
otherwise they would have torched
the whole lot. Did they leave any
messages?
BEAR
Not that I know, It appears that
the burnt out front door is the
message! Shit! I hate those
bastards MILTON, they're a cancer
on the Bencubbin.
COBO
Look I'll pay for the repairs, get
a double metal door this time with
electronic locks, get some more
camera's, and have them send the
signal to you phone. BEAR I'm
sorry to cause you all this extra
stress. The good news is that we
might have a chance to stick it to
those bastards, but I need
something from you!
BEAR
Oh, here it comes, the punch line.
What?
COBO
I need you to hide CROUPIER. Will
you do that, please? You do still
have the hidden passage right?
BEAR
Yes, its still there. Hmmm, I
don't know. CROUP was a mate, but
you ask a lot MILTON, its a big
risk, for everyone.
COBO
I know BEAR I'm aware of that. I
wouldn't ask unless it was
absolutely necessary. He will be
heavily disguised, if that's any
consolation. I'm going to bring
him in using JACINTA and COSTAS.
BEAR
Those little street rats! Shit!
MILTON this better be worth the
risk?
COBO
Oh yes it is BEAR, the pay off
will be considerable. It could set
you up for good.
BEAR
Or get us killed!
COBO
Well, there is that! (Sigh) Look
its nice to chat and all that, but
the clock is ticking. CROUPS out
there and venerable, if they get
to him first its game over red
rover. He needs to be hidden in
your place by the end of the day
no messing!
INT. BLACK BEARS - ROOM 3-15 - PROACTIVE ACTION
After dispatching JACINTA and COSTAS to get CROUPIER back
to BEARS, GANDER and COBO discuss the next move. COBO
decides to go into the Retrograde and confront VINCENT.
GANDER thinks he is mad but lets him go.
GANDER
So tell me MILTON, how did the
meeting with JACINTA and COSTAS
pan out, did they stab you?
COBO
No of course not, they're good
friends. However, just to be on
the safe side, I slipped them some
cash, to maintain a watch on the
Retrograde. They seemed happy to
help.
GANDER
I bet they did, more opportunity
for combat training for their
young accolades!
COBO
Yes! Well the news is good, they
are currently taking a food cart
over to container city with an
encrypted phone for CROUP, I'll
talk to him and get him inside the
cart and back here.
GANDER
Humm, lets hope it works.
COBO
Well, obviously they are watching
me, so from their point of view, I
just went over to MOMO's. All
they could see, is a quick visit
to a whorehouse, and then back
here. They just think I'm a
regular John! They have no idea
about the street kids being
involved! There not going to be
watching for a food cart coming
out a back garage, which it does
regularly by the way.
GANDER
Well, you know best MILTON, but
how did they figure out that
CROUPIER was in container city in
the first place. That's efficient
of them!
COBO
Well, they would have watched him
in jail. Their stooges would just
check the postal records and get
the location from that. Remember,
they can't kill him, because he
knows about something they want.
Their jail operatives would be
under strict "watch only" orders,
no killing in situ. Which is why
he has survived for so long. No, I
think those bastards must have
used an associate match, and then
made a link to someone staying at
BEARs from city records, namely a
MILTON COBO.
GANDER
Ok, so why don't they pick you up
and torture you!
COBO
Well, for one thing, They think I
don't know anything yet. Secondly
I can't be bait if I'm not on the
street. This is the mafia we are
talking about. You can't shake
them off and they tend not to
accept polite apologies, they can
play the long game. For them,
there is no rush. Their arrogance
is their greatest weakness!
GANDER
That's all very well, but how can
you get away with the loot, if
they are so efficient?
COBO
You can't! So the way I see is to
give them exactly what they want.
GANDER
But they want CROUPIER you can't
dob him in, that's not right!
COBO
Actually that's not quite
accurate. They don't care about
CROUPIER, he is nothing to them.
No they want their diamonds.
That's all. End of story. They
will of course kill CROUPIER just
as a preventive measure, but that
is not their main goal.
GANDER
MILTON can't you just let them
know that the Diamonds are hidden
in the walls of their own
kitchens, and then walk away?
COBO
DAVID really, Where is the fun in
that! Plus if we go down that
route there is no payback.
GANDER
Well what then?
COBO
DAVID are you any good at computer
searches?
GANDER
I have some skills, like normal
person skills. I'm not a hacker
What do you want?
COBO
I need you to find out who handles
maintenance for the Retrograde and
get a list of pre approved
contractors. Can you do that?
GANDER
I think so.
COBO
So how will you do that?
GANDER
Your testing me! Well, let me see.
I'll just contact all the local
contractors and pretend to be the
inn, say we have had a mishap,
some of the invoices have been
lost. That sort of thing. I'm
new in the job, see if they want
to settle the account! Shouldn't
be to hard! What are you up to?
COBO
Well, regardless of how well
disguised CROUP is and how well we
can conceal him at BEARs,
eventually they will come calling.
The main thing at the moment is to
buy us some time. I think its
time to reduce the pressure before
it becomes too serious.
GANDER
Are you suggesting that you go in
alone to see the bad guys? Have
you gone soft in the brain? They
will kill you!
COBO
No I don't think they will,
remember they need these jewels
and greed is a powerful emotion.
GANDER
I hope so, otherwise your a dead
man!
COBO
That's what makes this so
delicious and that's why the long
con is the highest form of the art
DAVID. Now you stay here and
whatever happens, don't come after
me.
GANDER
Can I help in any other way?
COBO
You can polish these shoes, I need
to look smart!
GANDER
You really are off you head, but
if it helps.
INT. RETROGRADE SMALL BAR - HOOK LINE AND SINKER
COBO visits VINCENT in the Retrograde, offers the stones
and requests more time. VINCENT says he has 24 hours and
throws him out.

POLE DANCER MUSIC
THEN ANOTHER DOOR
THUG ONE
There is a man to see you Mr
GAMBINO, he says he is a friend of
Cool Hand CROUPIER. Do you want me
to kill him?
VINCENT
Ah, thank you for your unwanted
advice, but no not yet, let him
in, lets see what he wants first!
COBO walks across the bar, whilst Vincent sits at table.
VINCENT
So Mr COBO, you are a friend of
Cool hand CROUPIER Is that
correct? What's on your mind?
COBO
Ah, Mr GAMBINO, I believe he has
something you want? (Pause) Ah,
the diamonds he stole from you.
VINCENT
You've got some balls, walking in
here. Tell why I shouldn't have
you killed? So this CROUPIER, he
sent you to negotiate, yes?
COBO
Yes Mr GAMBINO, he wishes to make
amends.
VINCENT
Does he now! Well, here's my
opening offer, you bring me my
stones by midnight and I won't
shoot you, your friend CROUPIER,
your family, his family, and every
one you know, and anyone else that
gets in the way.
COBO
Mr Gambino I'm very sorry, as much
as I would like to help, that
really can't been done!
VINCENT
Oh really?
COBO
CROUPIER doesn't have the stones
Mr GAMBINO. He concealed them
before he was arrested. Now, I
can get them back for you, but its
going to take some time.
VINCENT
So you know where they are?
COBO
No he's a little hazy on the exact
location, there has been a lot of
construction. Which is why it
might take some time. They need to
be extracted otherwise they may be
lost forever.
VINCENT
Then why are we even having this
conversation?
COBO
A friend of mine had some damage
to his 'hotel', we think it might
be you?
VINCENT
Well, that's the thing with
vermin, sometimes you have to
smoke them out.
COBO
Mr GAMBINO, I will get you your
stones. I just need you to call
off your dogs whilst I do it.
VINCENT
I guess you know who I am, which
either makes you very stupid, or
very brave to come here. (Pause)
I respect that. You have until
tomorrow to get those stones.
(Pause) Or I will have your nuts
in my hand and you're not going to
like that!
COBO
Thank you Mr GAMBINO.
VINCENT
Now get out of my club! (Pause
looking at the dancer) What are
you looking at get back on the
pole and dance, I'm not paying you
to gawp!
Bad man one leads COBO out to the street.
INT. BLACK BEARS - ROOM 3-15 - TIME TO REGROUP
GANDER, CROUPIER and COBO discuss the visit to VINCENT's
and their the very short timeline. COBO asks CROUPIER
(In disguise) to nick some passes off of utility personal
and to also steal a van. GANDER and COBO head off to a
'Sweet shop'
GANDER
How did it go?
COBO
Nothing a change of under-ware
wouldn't fix.
GANDER
Did it work, do we have more time?
One week?
COBO
Hmmm!
GANDER
A couple of days?
COBO
Hmmm!
GANDER
Less?
COBO
We have to go tomorrow!
GANDER
Oh great! Well that's it then.
Like I was saying tomorrow's
perfect! (Pause and has a false
smile) I checked the local
plumbers and two are approved for
work at the Retrograde, they are
affiliated to two other mafia
families, by the way!
COBO
Great, Mafia plumbers. OK then
lets get to it.
CROUPIER
MILTON this bloody wig is itching
like crazy!
COBO
Well stop scratching it, do you
want them to nobble you before we
have the diamonds?
CROUPIER
No of course not!
COBO
Well shut up then! Now focus on
the job!
GANDER
Gentlemen, conmen, let me get my
head around this. We are going to
break in to the Retrograde
tonight, cut through thick steel
