Few Christians reading the Bible would dare think of themselves as anti-Semitic. An extreme minority would dare say or act out their hatred for our Jewish siblings. Then we get to Jesus in the gospel of John and we cringe. We back away. Or we keep reading without a second thought as Jesus, per our common translations, seems to be cutting out the Jewish faithful from God's fold. This is not what Jesus is doing but this can be how we read texts like these from John 10. Antisemitism is a hateful symbol painted on a door, and it is an otherwise mild thought in our minds that we Christians are somehow different. Set apart. Closer to God because we have Jesus. Again, this is not what Jesus is saying, though it can be what we hear. How does centering our thoughts on our patterns and worship skew our vision of God's kingdom?
