This week Jesus shows up and we give him the scriptures to read for us. He chooses a promise from Isaiah that leaves more questions than answers. He claims that the promise is fulfilled, yet we know that there are still poor, captive, blind, oppressed and neighbors paralyzed by debt. We know we are bound up in all these unfinished promises. Jesus is asking why these symptoms of sin still exist AND Jesus declares that in his presence, they are eliminated. Which means fulfillment must continue to be proclaimed and lived until every child of God is released. Our gospel for this sermon is Luke 4.14-21 as we continue through our list of superhero descriptions for Jesus.
