What Does The Bible Say About The Miracles Of Jesus
Show Notes Transcript

The miracles that Jesus performed are recorded in the Bible as evidence that He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 97 accounts recorded in the New Testament scriptures. These miracles were spread across the entire region Jesus was in, from Caesarea Philippi in the north, to Judean villages in the south, and from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon by the Mediterranean Sea, eastward across the Jordan River, in Decapolis. Take about 30 minutes to listen in on Arnie and Fred's readings of some of these miracles that Jesus performed. Have your Bible available and at the end decide for yourself if Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Good afternoon. This is Arnie Granke and Fred Gosnell. We're with Woodland church of Christ in Sumter, South Carolina. And this is What Does The Bible Say? Fred, I'm looking at Matthew chapter nine beginning at verse 35. And Jesus went about all their cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. I once compiled a list of New Testament scriptures that report the miracles Jesus performed. By my count 26 events were reported by single biographical writers and another 26 were reported by two, three or four penman. All together totaling 97 accounts. Sixteen reports mentioned two or more persons, even multitudes being healed, or having demons cast out. And thousands of people witnessed or benefited from Jesus' miracle, mostly Jews, but also several Gentiles. These occurrences were spread all across the region, from Caesarea Phillippi in the north, to Judean villages in the south, from the coast of Tyre  and Sidon by the Mediterranean Sea, eastward across the Jordan River in Decapolis. Here are just some of them.

Fred  2:03
Well, Arnie, the first one was performed in Cana of Galilee. And that's where Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding feast. And we begin in  John two verse one. And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there. And both Jesus was called, and his disciples to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus sayeth unto Him, they have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, What have I had to do with thee? Mine hour has not yet come. His mother sayeth unto the servants, Whatsoever He sayeth unto you do it. And there were set there six water pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews containing two or three firkins apiece, (about 27 gallons apiece). Jesus saith unto them, Fill the water pots with water and they filled them up to the brim and he sayeth unto them, Draw out now and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bear it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine and knew not whence it was. But the servants which drew the water knew; the governor of the feast called the bridegroom and saith to him, every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine. And when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good one till now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth His glory and His disciples believed on him.

Arnie  3:28
Jesus visited, did visit I guess really, it was the regular synagogue that he would attend in Capernaum. On the sabbath, and Mark chapter one, beginning in verse 21, tells us about an occasion when an evil spirit was cast out there, beginning in verse 21, And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the Sabbath day, he entered into the synagogue and taught and they were astonished at His doctrine. For He taught them as one that had authority and not as the scribes. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, saying, Let us alone. What have we to do with thee thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him saying, hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed in so much that they questioned among themselves saying, What thing is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority commandeth He even the unclean spirits, and they do obey Him. And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region, round about Galilee.

Fred  4:55
Again, Arnie in Galilee, Jesus cleansed a man with leprosy there. And Luke writes about that in Luke five, verses 12 through 15, beginning of verse 12. And it came to pass when He was in a certain city, behold, a man full of leprosy who seeing Jesus fell on his face. And besought him saying, Lord, if thou wilt, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And he put forth his hand and touched him, saying, I will.  Be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. And he charged him to tell no man, but go and show myself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing according as Moses commanded for a testimonial unto them. But so much the more went there a fame abroad of Him and great multitudes came together to hear and to be healed by Him of their infirmities.

Arnie  5:43
There were, of course, Roman soldiers throughout the country. And a centurion was a commander of, of 100 Roman soldiers. There was a centurion in Capernaum, who's dying servant was healed by Jesus. And Luke tells about that in Luke chapter seven beginning in verse one. Now when He had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, He entered into Capernaum. And certain Centurion's servant, who was dear unto him was sick and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching Him that He would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly saying, that he was worthy for whom He should do this, for he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. Then Jesus went with them. And when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto Him, Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my, under my roof. Wherefore, neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee; but say a word,  and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man under authority having under me soldiers, and I say to one go and he goeth, and to another come and he cometh and to my servant do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard these things, he marveled in him, and turned about and said  unto the people that followed him. I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And they that were sent, returned to the house, returning to the house found the servant whole that had been sick.

Fred  6:50
Well, Jesus was entering in to the gate of the city of Nain and there was a, a funeral that was going on, I guess, and a widow's only son had died. And Jesus raised him to life and the record is in Luke seven beginning in verse 11. And it came to pass the day after, that  He went into a city called Nain. And many of his disciples went with Him and much people. Now when He came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother and she was a widow. And much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and send unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. and he that was dead, sat up and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all they glorified God saying that a great prophet is risen-up  among us, and that God has visited his people. And this rumor of him went forth throughout all Judea and throughout all the region around about.

Arnie  8:49
In  Caperaum the ruler of the synagogue was a man by the name of Jairus, I stumbled over that. And and he had a 12 year old daughter who had died. Jesus raised her up to life. And the account begins in Matthew chapter nine verse, verse 18. While He spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead;  but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. And Jesus arose and followed him, and so did his disciples. Now, in the meantime, the situation occurred where the woman touched the hem of His garment, and was healed of bleeding that had bothered her for many years. Then in verse 23, after that, when Jesus came into the ruler's house, He saw the minstrels and the people making a noise. He said unto them, Give place For the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. They laughed Him to scorn. But when the people were put forth He went in and took her by the hand and the maid arose, and the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.

Fred  10:14
Well, He's at Capernaum now and there there are two blind men there that Jesus meets. And in Matthew 9:27, to 31, beginning in verse 27. Matthew writes and says, And when Jesus departed thence two blind men followed Him crying and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. And when He was come into the house, the blind men came to Him and Jesus sayeth unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this. They said it to him, Yea Lord. Then toucheth He their eyes, saying, According to your faith, be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straightly charged them saying,  See that no man know it.  But they when they were departed, spread abroad, His fame in all  that country.

Arnie  10:59
John chapter five tells the account of a healing that Jesus did at the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. And it was on a Sabbath day. Several of his healings occurred on the Sabbath. John chapter five beginning in verse one. After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep gate, a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue, Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of, blind halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water, for an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water. Whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in, was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity 30 and 8 years. When Jesus saw him lie and knew that he had been now a long time, He sayeth unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered, Sir, I have no man when the water is troubled to put me into the pool. But while I'm coming another steppeth down before me. Jesus sayeth unto him, Rise, take up thy bed and walk. And immediately the man was made whole. He took up his bed and walked, and on the same day was the Sabbath. The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the Sabbath day and it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. He answered them, He that made me whole the same said unto me, take up thy bed and walk. Then asked they him what man is that which said unto thee take up the bed and walk? And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had withdrawn Himself, a multitude being in that place,  Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole sin no more, lest a worst thing come unto thee.  The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus which had made him whole.

Fred  11:41
Okay, Jesus, now he's in Galilee. He's near Bethsaida, and this is a desert place. There's not a lot of a lot there. And it is here that there are 5000 that He feeds. In beginning Mark six verses 30 to 44, verse 30, And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus and told him all things both what they had done, and what they have taught. He said unto them, come ye yourselves apart into a desert place and rest a while: for there were many coming and going and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place. by ship privately, and the people saw them departing, and many knew Him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto Him. And I lost my place here. Okay, And Jesus when He came out saw much people and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto Him and said, This is a desert place and now the time is far past, send them away that they may go into the country round about and into the villages and by themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto Him, Shall we go and buy 200 pennyworth of bread and give them to eat? He sayeth  unto tell them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew they say five and two fishes. And He commanded them to make all sit down. by companies upon the green grass, and they sat down in  ranks, by hundreds and by 50s. And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, He looked up to heaven and blessed and break the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them. And the two fishes divided he among them all. They did all eat were filled, and they took up 12 baskets full of the fragments and of the fishes, and they that did eat of  the loaves were about 5000 men.

Arnie  15:28
Mark chapter seven, places Jesus in the coasts of Tyre and  Sidon, which were up along the Mediterranean Sea, and there a Gentile woman had a daughter who was possessed of a demon, Mark, chapter seven tells us about that beginning in verse 24,  From thence He arose and  went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon and entered into a house and would have no man know it: but He could not be hid. For a certain woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard of Him, and came and fell at his feet, The woman was a Greek, or a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by nation, and she saw that He, besought Him that he would cast forth the demon out of her daughter. But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be fed, for it is not meet to take the children's bread and cast it unto the dogs. She answered and said unto Him, Yes, Lord, yet the dogs under the table, eat the children's crumbs. And He said unto her for this saying go thy way, the demon is gone out of thy daughter. And when she was come to her house, she found the demon gone, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

Fred  16:48
Well, now, Jesus is in Jerusalem, and it's the Sabbath day. And there's a man there that that was born blind and Jesus heals his blindness. And we begin in John nine verse one, we're going to verse 11, beginning, verse one, And  as Jesus passed by, He saw a man which was blind from his birth. And His disciples asked Him saying, Master, who did sin this man or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, neither hath this man sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of Him that sent me while it is day. The night cometh when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When He had thus spoken, He spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and He annointed the eyes of the blind with the clay  and said unto him, Go and wash in the pool of Siloam, which is by interpretation, Sent. He went his way therefore, and washed and came seeing. The neighbores therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind said, Is not this he that sat and begged? Some said, This is he: Others said, He is like him. But he said, I am he. Therefore said they unto him,  How were thine eyes opened? He answered and said, a man that is called Jesus made clay and anointed mine eyes and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam and  wash and I went and washed, and I received sight.

Arnie  18:14
That story actually continued with that account, actually continues a little bit further because some of the Jewish officials were angered at that, that Jesus had healed on the on the Sabbath day. That seemed to be a real problem with a lot of them. In Matthew chapter 17, I guess it was time for tax. And so there was a coin for a Roman coin that was found in a fish's mouth and, and the account of that, that begins in verse seven. Matthew 17, verse 24, when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter and said, Doth not your Master pay tribute? He saith yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus preceded him, saying, What thinkest thou Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children or of strangers? Peter sayeth unto  him of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go down to the sea and cast an hook and take up the fish that first cometh up. And when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a stater:  that take and give unto them for me, and thee. Peter just paid his taxes.

Fred  19:27
Yes. And now we have Luke, he gives the account of, there was a crippled woman she was she was bent over for 18 years and again, This is on the Sabbath day. And of course, the religious leaders didn't like it when Jesus healed anybody on the Sabbath. So, we will begin and Luke 13, we're going to go down, verses a 10 to 17. So beginning in verse 10, And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity 18 years, and was bound together and could no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And He laid his hands on her and immediately she was made straight and glorified God. And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath day and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work in them, therefore come and be healed, and not all the Sabbath. The Lord that answered him and said thou hypocrite. Now each one of you on the Sabbath day. The Lord then answered him and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his  his ox or his ass from the stall and lead him away to watering? And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound lo these 18 years be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day. And, excuse me, when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed, and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.

Arnie  21:19
In John chapter 21, Jesus goes up into into Galilee, this is after his resurrection,  and there had been a similar event that occurred, keep that in mind. A similar event that had occurred earlier during Jesus' ministry, John chapter 21. And beginning in verse one. After these things, Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias, and on this wise showed He himself. There were gathered, Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus and Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples, Simon Peter saith  unto him, I go a fishing. They say unto him, we also go with thee. They went forth and entered into a ship immediately. That night they caught nothing. And when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have you any meat? answered him? No. He said unto them, cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. Therefore, the disciple whom Jesus loved, sayeth unto  Peter, it is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat on unto him (for he was naked) and did cast himself into the sea, and the other disciples came in a little ship, for they were not far from the land. But as it were 200 cubits, dragging the net with the fishes. As soon then as they were come to the land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon and bread. Jesus saith unto them bring the fish which you've now caught. Simon Peter went up and drew the net to the land full of great fishes. 150 and three, and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. Evidently, John recognized Jesus because of the nature of that event. And the similar thing having happened before,

Fred  23:47
Yes. Now well, we have several reports that there are numerous miracles that are reported, and we begin in Mark 1:39. There's one there, it says, And He preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out demons. Doesn't tell us how many there were, but there were numerous places that He went. Then again in Luke 6:17, through 19 says, He came down with them and stood in the plain, in the company of his disciples and a great multitude of people out of all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases, and they that were vexed with unclean spirits and they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch Him for there went virtue out of Him and healed them all. Then in Luke 7:19, through, I'm sorry, Matthew, Matthew, Matthew 12:14, and 15. Then the Pharisees went out on the hill to counsel against him, how they might destroy him. But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence and great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all. So people were always looking for Jesus and looking to see what he was doing and that they wanted to see these miracles and they, a lot of them were sick and a lot of needed to be healed.

Arnie  25:17
There are numerous passages of this sort, there in the New Testament. Mark chapter six, beginning in verse 53, says that, When they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew Him and ran through the whole region round about began to carry about in beds, those that were sick, where they heard He was, and whithersoever He entered into villages or cities or country, they laid the sick in the streets and besought Him, that they might touch it. If that He might touch if it were but the border of His  garments, and as many as touched it, were made whole. Matthew 21 and verse 14 is another case of of that. And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. So, in Galilee disciples of John the bapti, baptizer had come in Luke seven, had had come and asked Jesus, Art thou he that should come or look we for another. And Luke said, the beginning in verse 21 says, In that same hour, He cured many of their infirmities, and plagues and of evil spirits, and unto many that were blind He gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way. Tell John what things ye have seen and heard. How that the blind see, the lame walk, the  lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised. To the poor the gospel is preached. Blessed is he whosoever shall not be offended in Me. It was Isaiah's prophecy in Isaiah chapter 35. And beginning in verse four, of which the, the Master was reminding them, that passage says, Say unto them, that are of fearful heart, Be strong, fear not behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense, He will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind, shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf  shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing; for in the wilderness shall waters break out and streams in the desert. And what do you think? Is Jesus truly the Christ? Or look we for another? Simply read, we simply read the accounts. You decide. We thank you for listening. If you have questions or would like to communicate with us about this conversation this afternoon, you can reach for Fred on on email at fgosnell@ftc-i.net.
