Some of you may have seen a group of people from Children 1st out on Porty High Street recently. They were canvassing opinion about a piece of legislation which has just started making its way through the Scottish Parliament. The new law, which some find controversial, would make it illegal for parents to smack or otherwise physically punish their children. Children 1st, now in its 134th year, understandably supports the bill and has taken to the streets around Scotland to explain why. The organisation’s Policy Manager, Portobello resident Mark Ballard, told us more.

Children 1st runs a support service for stressed parents called Parentline. Full details can be found here https://tinyurl.com/y5cv4y8c or call the freephone number 08000 28 22 33

It’s available 7 days a week - Monday to Friday, from 9am-9pm and Saturday and Sunday, from 9am-12noon
