The Greek island of Samos may seem a long way from Portobello. Some people may have been there on holiday, enjoying the sandy beaches and the warm waters of the Aegean. But the island is just a mile from the Turkish coast, which makes it a target for refugees fleeing war zones and trying to find a haven in Europe. There are now around 5,000 of them, housed (if that's the right word) in makeshift camps. It's a miserable existence for the men, women and children waiting, painfully slowly, for the Greek authorities to process them. They are given some succour by a group called the Samos Volunteers. Over Christmas and the New Year, they were joined by Portobello resident, Gica Loening.
