Show Notes

In this week’s show our guest is Morgan Ely, who has been reading comic books and graphic novels for past 20 years. He took a Communication course in college focused on studying comics as a genre. For the past several years, Morgan has leveraged his joy for comic books and passion for working with youth to promote literacy among children and encouraged adults to use comics get their children reading and having family fun in the process.

He has promoted Free Comic Book Day and Halloween Comicfest, in the local community, and over the years has helped get hundreds of comics in the hands of under-privileged children and their families. He’s led yearly excursions for kids from Ronald McDonald House to comic books stores as well. Morgan works in the field of college admissions and is currently the Director of Pharmacy Admissions at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy.

We discuss Free Comic Book Day which is taking place on the first Saturday of May (5/4/2019). It is an annual promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to help bring new readers into independent comic book stores.

Mr. Ely shares about his love of comic books and describes the history of this artistic medium. His message to children interested in comics is to promote fun instead of fear, and give them a healthy outlet, especially if they are going through a rough-season in life. He shares about his efforts as is a devote Christian, husband, and father of 2 small children, a girl and a boy to teach them life values through this literary genre. One comic book that revolutionized the art form was "Spirit" by Will Eisner who won a Pulitzer prize for his graphic novel named "A Contract with God. He preferred the term sequential art. Mr. Ely recommends independent comic books and graphic novels such as:
