NARRATOR

Previously on VOID, the crew happened upon another ship and met the Mendlesons. Distrust and deceit have begun to gnaw at the strength of relationships with ulterior motives brought to light.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS, WINDOW HATCH

INT. GILBAN’S QUARTERS - MORNING

MADDOX KANE

Oh no, oh no, oh no! Where the hell am I?

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS(BARE) PACING

MADDOX KANE (CONT'D)

Ok ok. I’m naked in someone’s quarters annnddd looking out the...Oh yes, I’m on a ship. That much is established.

SOUND: BUTTON SOUND, HATCH OPENING FAILING, HAND POUNDING ON HATCH

SEREBELLA REON

(muffled through hatch) Gilban! You’re over an hour late for your shift. The captain’s been paging you! Get your shit together.

MADDOX KANE

(muffling voice awkwardly) Uh-hmm!

SEREBELLA REON

Ok, whatever, just get to engineering.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS OUTSIDE WALKING AWAY

MADDOX KANE

That was close. Alright. Think! Maybe I can get back...

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS (BARE), FUMBLING WITH EQUIPMENT

MADDOX KANE (CONT'D)

You’re joking right? Did he really make it work with this crap? I can’t work with this stuff. I don’t even know...Dammit! You’ve got to be kidding me!

SOUND: TRANSITION, VARIOUS EXERCISE EQUIPMENT IN USE

INT. CHING SHE GYM - MORNING

URSULA NASH

(on a treadmill, bickering)

I can’t believe you used all the hot water again!

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(on a treadmill, bickering)

You couldn’t wait for 15 minutes until it got hot?

URSULA NASH

I have stuff to do too Jonas!

SOUND: HATCH, FOOTSTEPS AS ARGUMENT CONTINUES

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Since we’re in space, I don’t know how strict the schedules are Ursula!

URSULA NASH

How very considerate of you!

REGINA REX

(walking up to Anko, whispering)

At it again.

ANKO LUMEN

(using universal weights, not whispering)

Constantly, it’s been like this all morning.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Oh, you mean how you’ve been so considerate of me? When was the last time we had “us” time?

URSULA NASH

I don’t know! You’re the one who’s been working extra shifts!

REGINA REX

Hey, maybe you two need a time out.

SOUND: TREADMILL COMING TO A STOP

URSULA NASH

(slowing down on treadmill, leaving)

Yeah, maybe we need a break...

REGINA REX

I didn’t say break, I said...

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS, HATCH

REGINA REX (CONT'D)

...time out. Are things ok Jonas?

SOUND: SLOWING DOWN ON TREADMILL, COMING TO A STOP

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(slowing down on treadmill, leaving)

No, they haven’t been for awhile. I’m sorry, I need some space.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS, HATCH

ANKO LUMEN

Trouble in paradise. Speaking of, how’s it going with you and...

REGINA REX

(cutting him off, changing the subject, starting to lift weights)

Anko, I want you to take Pat Mendelson to the plant habitat and show her what you do. I’d like to have her help you there and maybe take over.

ANKO LUMEN

But I enjoy tending to the plants!

REGINA REX

You do?

ANKO LUMEN

(reluctantly)

Well, yes. I’ve grown fond of the process.

REGINA REX

(surprised)

Ok. Then she can be your assistant for the time being.

ANKO LUMEN

Fine.

REGINA REX

I need you to keep an eye on her and report back.

ANKO LUMEN

Will do. They seem nice in their own kind of way.

REGINA REX

They do but we have to be sure of them before we can really accept them as crew.

ANKO LUMEN

Do you think they’ll be able to help us on Europa?

REGINA REX

That depends on what their intent is for the future.

SOUND: TRANSITION

INT. URSULA NASH QUARTERS - DAY

URSULA NASH

I think she may be right.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

About what?

URSULA NASH

I think we need a break.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

From what? Us.

URSULA NASH

JONAS ALDRIDGE

We have been at each other’s throats a lot.

URSULA NASH

If we just stayed in our own cabins for awhile and did things separately the time off could help our relationship.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Or drive us apart.

URSULA NASH

Yeah, maybe.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

But then I guess we’ll know if this relationship has staying power or not.

URSULA NASH

You’ve been distracted lately by filling in for Gideon’s duties with Regina. Your lack of attention on our relationship has been really disappointing Jonas. That’s what’s hurt me the most.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Wait a minute. You’re not going to lay all this at my feet are you?

Ever since Gideon mentioned your parents you’ve been completely obsessed about it! I’m not the only one who’s been ignoring our relationship!

PAUSE A BEAT

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

(realization to himself) Oh shit, I’ve been ignoring our relationship.

URSULA NASH

(defensive then understanding)

Yes you have! And now that you mention it, I guess I have been too. It seems that Gideon is still having an effect on us.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I’m sorry about your parents but I don’t know what to do about it.

URSULA NASH

I just wanted you to be supportive. You don’t always have to fix everything Jonas. And right now, you can’t fix this.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I guess I can’t. I’m sorry things took this turn.

URSULA NASH

So am I.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I don’t want this to end.

URSULA NASH

I don’t either but we need to work on ourselves a little.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

You’re right.

URSULA NASH

Give me some distance to deal with this thing with my parents and you take the time you need.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Ok, that’s fair. I suppose we’ll see each other around.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS, HATCH, TRANSITION, SPRINKLERS, USE OF GARDEN TOOLS, FOOTSTEPS

INT. CHING SHE PLANT HABITAT - DAY

ANKO LUMEN

Over here you’ll find the tools just below the nutrient shelf.

PAT MENDELSON

This is an incredible set up Mr. Lumen.

ANKO LUMEN

Doctor Lumen actually but you may call me Anko.

PAT MENDELSON

(buttering up to him) Oh wow, thanks Anko.

ANKO LUMEN

Have you worked with plants much?

PAT MENDELSON

Back on the station a bit yes. My parents raised me with fresh vegetables. They didn’t care much for the synthetics. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to eat a meal with real veggies when we got to the ship.

ANKO LUMEN

(condescending)

Yes, very exciting. How long were you stranded?

PAT MENDELSON

Not so much stranded as slowly coasting but you know what? I lost track of how long. Terry’s the one who keeps that kind of stuff in mind. My job is remembering birthdays!

ANKO LUMEN

Ok. Uh, why don’t you start by re- potting the Hansel eggplants.

PAT MENDELSON

Would love to! Eggplant is one of my favorites.

ANKO LUMEN

I already started the process right over there. Just pick up where I left off.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS, USE OF GARDEN TOOLS CONT.

PAT MENDELSON

(while working on plants) Are plants your specialty Anko?

ANKO LUMEN

(while working on plants) No, they’re a hobby. I master a number of disciplines. However in this case, I was attempting to terraform Saturn’s moon Titan but ran into some problems.

PAT MENDELSON

Oh that’s a shame. What happened?

ANKO LUMEN

(slightly hesitant at first)

I’m not really at liberty to say, but another crew member had an episode and disrupted the mission. I was in the midst of some vital experiments when we had to pack up and get back on the ship.

PAT MENDELSON

(playing to his ego)

That must’ve been frustrating. You seem to be one of the more important people on this ship from what I’ve been noticing. It seems like a crime for someone of your stature to have to walk away from an important experiment.

ANKO LUMEN

You have no idea. Luckily, I’ll get a second chance.

PAT MENDELSON

What do you mean?

ANKO LUMEN

(hushed tone)

Keep this to yourself, but we’re heading to Europa. I felt it was the next most logical alternative.

PAT MENDELSON

That’s so exciting! We’re heading to Mercury!

ANKO LUMEN

Jupiter actually. Mercury would be way too hot.

PAT MENDELSON

Oh right, silly Pat! Don’t worry, my lips are zipped!

SOUND: PAT MAKING A ZIPPING SOUND

ANKO LUMEN

Thanks.

PAT MENDELSON

Will you need help with your experiments? I would love to learn more.

ANKO LUMEN

Perhaps. We’re down a crew member and Aldridge is of little help.

PAT MENDELSON

You don’t like Captain Aldridge?

ANKO LUMEN

Not particularly. He has his uses but they are few. It would be nice to work with someone who’s more on my frequency.

PAT MENDELSON

You just tell me what to do Dr. Lumen and I’m in!

ANKO LUMEN

Anko, and thank you, I will.

PAT MENDELSON

You mentioned a crew member dropped out?

ANKO LUMEN

(hushed tone)

Yes but don’t mention this to Regina. It turns out one of our crew members was an android.

PAT MENDELSON

You don’t say!

ANKO LUMEN

He malfunctioned or something and took over the ship. That’s why my work was disrupted. They took off and left us on Titan with no supplies. We almost died!

Oh my!

PAT MENDELSON

ANKO LUMEN

Luckily, my quick thinking kicked in and I realized we needed to ration everything which is what ultimately saved our lives.

PAT MENDELSON

You’re a hero!

ANKO LUMEN

Thank you for noticing! No-one else seems to appreciate me.

PAT MENDELSON

Well I sure do! And this stays in the vault between you and me! Now, fill me in on all the juicy gossip! Who’s sleeping with who?

SOUND: TRANSITION, KEYPAD, FOOTSTEPS, USE OF DIFFERENT EQUIPMENT

INT. CHING SHE BRIDGE - AFTERNOON

REGINA REX

This is the navigation area where you’ll work. I’ll need you to use the scopes here to guide our course watching for obstacles.

TERRY MENDELSON

Obstacles?

REGINA REX

Meteor showers, comets, old satellites are all dangers. I also need to know if we detect any other ships nearby.

TERRY MENDELSON

And what happens if we run into someone hostile?

REGINA REX

The ship is armed well. We have heavy shields and an automated gun system. Overall we have some serious firepower.

TERRY MENDELSON

Can I get a look at those guns? I’d love to check them out. I’m a bit of an arms enthusiast.

REGINA REX

(on her guard) Enthusiast?

TERRY MENDELSON

Yeah, I have a big interest in their mechanics and how they’ve evolved over history. Everyone needs a hobby!

REGINA REX

Right. The guns are in a restricted area of the ship. Once you’ve made it past your probationary period we’ll discuss it.

TERRY MENDELSON

Works for me! Looking forward to it!

REGINA REX

For now, just know we’re well protected and can defend ourselves or get out of here in a hurry.

TERRY MENDELSON

This ship does look to have some serious engines. If you like, I’m happy to assist Gilban with his engineering...

REGINA REX

(cutting him off)

He works in a restricted area too, so for now you’re stuck with me.

TERRY MENDELSON

(trying to get her to warm up to him)

Not at all, it is my genuine pleasure! Both Pat and I understand that we have to earn trust. It’s not given freely. I’m sure you don’t trust freely Captain Rex.

REGINA REX

No, I don’t. Especially people I meet in space. Trust will come with time Mr. Mendelson.

TERRY MENDELSON

Terry. No problems here, I’ll do whatever is required of me.

REGINA REX

Glad to hear that. For the time being, your main purpose will be to work with those scopes. We have a long trip ahead of us.

TERRY MENDELSON

Absolutely. Where are we going?

REGINA REX

We’ll talk about the exact location later; focus on the course I plotted to Jupiter. I’m going to grab some drinks from the kitchen, do you need anything?

TERRY MENDELSON

I’m good with whatever you bring back Captain Rex.

REGINA REX

Start getting familiar with the nav system like I was showing you. If you need assistance, ask for Astrid.

Astrid?

TERRY MENDELSON

REGINA REX

Yeah, the AI. You know, from the station?

TERRY MENDELSON

(fumbling)

Oh yeah! Right. Astrid. Sorry, it’s been awhile since we left the New Hope.

REGINA REX

Mm-hmm. Just prompt the AI like this, Astrid, say hello to our new guest Terry Mendelson.

ASTRID

Hello guest Terry Mendelson.

TERRY MENDELSON

Hello Astrid!

REGINA REX

I’ll be back shortly.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS, HATCH, KEYPAD, RANDOM BUTTONS BEING PUSHED

TERRY MENDELSON

Astrid, tell me which deck is the armory on?

ASTRID

As a guest, you do not have clearance for that information.

TERRY MENDELSON

I see. Astrid, where can I access the ventilation duct plans for the ship?

ASTRID

As a guest, you do not have clearance for that information.

TERRY MENDELSON

Astrid, on what deck is the life support system on?

ASTRID

As a guest, you do not have clearance for that information.

TERRY MENDELSON

(in unison, finishing the sentence with Astrid)

...do not have clearance for that information, I get it! Shit!

Alright, let’s see how hackable the computer system is.

SOUND: KEYPAD, TRANSITION, DRINKING SOUNDS CONTINUE THROUGHOUT

INT. CHING SHE CANTINA - NIGHT

ANKO LUMEN

(very drunk)

Another one! This time, we toast Gideon the Android!

URSULA NASH

(very drunk)

Really? Him? It? Why? In fact, why are you here drinking anyway? You never drink.

ANKO LUMEN

I decided it was time for a change and I thought I’d let loose for once! My failure set me free!

URSULA NASH

Ok. But then why are you toasting a treacherous android?

ANKO LUMEN

For his contribution to sabotaging the ship and my mission which helped lead to my freedom!

URSULA NASH

Oh, I get, I think.

ANKO LUMEN

That prick. He sure did a number on everything, even the ship. And right in front of us! Nobody noticed he was a freakin’ android! He even fooled you, and you’re a doctor!

URSULA NASH

I know I am! A doctor. Whatever. And you’re right, he fooled me too! Come to think of it, I never ran any scans on him. He never let me!

ANKO LUMEN

Clever bastard. He knew how to play all of us, even Regina. And now he’s gone.

URSULA NASH

Yeah, too soon! If stupid Regina hadn’t opened that air lock...

Dammit! I need to know what he meant about my parents.

ANKO LUMEN

To your parents!

URSULA NASH

My parents!

SOUND: BOTH TAKING A DRINK

URSULA NASH (CONT'D)

(getting more drunk as the conversation continues)

Wow, this is so, so, sstrrong.

ANKO LUMEN

(getting more drunk as the conversation continues)

And so smoooth.

URSULA NASH

(slurring more)

The quaaludes in there help. To ‘ludes!

‘ludes!

SOUND: BOTH DRINKING

ANKO LUMEN

URSULA NASH

I normally don’t drink like this either, at least not for awhile. I guess things change.

ANKO LUMEN

Since Mars, it’s not the same.

URSULA NASH

(taking a drink)

No, it’s not. A lot is different. I miss him.

ANKO LUMEN

I miss the station. My stature there was unquestionable.

URSULA NASH

It’s weird without Jonas, sharing space with him. Now it’s just lonely.

ANKO LUMEN

Nobody questioned me. I had a bunch of assistants. I had respect. But I also produced results.

URSULA NASH

He makes me so mad! I just wish he’d listen but sometimes he just doesn’t get me. He doesn’t understand what I’m going through.

ANKO LUMEN

But out here I can’t get anything accomplished. I have no traction. I feel isolated. It’s like I’m falling into...

URSULA NASH

(cutting him off)

And now he’s not there at all and it’s like there’s a hole.

ANKO LUMEN

A hole?

URSULA NASH

Yeah, like there’s something missing and it hurts in the pit of your stomach at the same time.

ANKO LUMEN

I know exactly what you mean.

SOUND: DRINK GLASSES CLINKING, BOTH TAKING A DRINK

URSULA NASH

I’m really glad I have you to talk to Anko.

ANKO LUMEN

Me too.

SOUND: MORE DRINKING, SILENCE, SLOW BUILDING KISSING SOUND END OF EPISODE
