In our previous episode the colony suffered a great collapse that nearly killed Dr. Gerald Daniels, the best friend of Dr. Jonas Aldridge. Daniels survived but will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Upon talking to Daniels, Jonas has now discovered that the colony is in worse shape than he imagined and time is running out for a solution.

Episode 3: UNDERGROUND COLONY

In our previous episode the colony suffered a great collapse that nearly killed Dr. Gerald Daniels, the best friend of Dr. Jonas Aldridge. Daniels survived but will spend the rest of his life in a wheel chair. Upon talking to Daniels, Jonas has now discovered that the colony is in worse shape than he imagined and time is running out for a solution.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

I know I’m scratching your back but how can you be purring at a time like this? You’re completely oblivious aren’t you?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(FROM THE OTHER END OF THE COMMUNICATOR)

Nova, it’s Jonas. I was wondering if you could help me with something, could you come to my lab?

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Sure thing.

Jonas, are you worried about the meteor shower?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Yes, to some degree, but right now I have other things to be concerned about. See you soon.

My pleasure, where are we going?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Level 6, sector 12. Unfortunately we have to walk to sector 8 since the lift in 12 doesn’t work anymore.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

What’s there?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Dr. Daniel’s has a storage space in that sector, we’re going to retrieve some of his things.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

How is he?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Recovering. They have him in rehab but can only do so much. They won’t be keeping him much longer so I want to make sure he has some of this things so he’s more comfortable when he moves in with me.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Oh that’s nice. I went to inspect the ship and came across the pilot’s last log entry.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Oh? How’s the ship’s condition?

NOVA BAYFLOWER

For not being flown for 3 years, it’s in decent shape. I was wondering about the pilot. Her name is Liddy Aldridge, do you know...

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS STOP JONAS ALDRIDGE

(CUTTING HER OFF)

Yes, Liddy was my sister. She died.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to... SOUND: FOOTSTEPS START WALKING AGAIN 

JONAS ALDRIDGE

It’s fine. She was a pilot, a very good one.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

How did she...?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Die? (SIGHS)

No doubt you heard of the failed Mars mission.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Yes of course.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

She was on that mission.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Oh. I never heard much about what happened.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

The council loves their secrets. The mission itself initially went fine. I helped coordinate some of the surface investigations they were doing. Ideally Mars was in line to become our new home.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

The council mentioned something about a "tragic accident".

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Yeah, something like that. A storm hit and it was a big one. The storms on Mars are no joke, dangerously high winds, terrible debris flying everywhere, and they can last for days. Unfortunately numerous members of the mission were lost in the storm and the ships they had there were all damaged beyond repair.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Your poor sister.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Unfortunately she didn’t get killed in the storm, I wish she had, it would’ve been quicker. No, she was one of the few unlucky survivors who starved to death after they ran out of food. A supply ship was on its way to support the mission but after the storm, the council decided they didn’t want to risk any more on Mars. They ordered the ship to turn around and come home, leaving the survivors there to die.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Oh my god. I had no idea.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I raised hell with the council, I even threatened to kill the one who made the decision. They had to drag me out of the council chambers. I’ve been labeled a "troublemaker" ever since. They only keep me around because they need me since there aren’t many scientists left. Here’s the lift.

Oh! That smell!

JONAS ALDRIDGE

You’ve never been to this tier?

NOVA BAYFLOWER

No, but I heard the rumors about the livestock. They weren’t kidding about the odors.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

If you think this is bad, you should visit the pig pits.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

No thank you. I heard members of the revolt tried to sabotage the pits to get them shut down.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

There was an attempt yes. The revolt apparently has some members who still fight for animal rights.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Someone should, the way animals are treated down here is terrible.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I don’t think you know the half of it. The rumors of what’s going on in the lower tiers is disturbing to say the least... Ah! Here we are.

GERALD DANIEL’S STORAGE SPACE 

SOUND: DOOR UNLOCKING, DOOR OPENING, WALKING, DOOR CLOSING, SWITCH FLIPPED, LIGHTS AND ELECTRONIC SOUNDS WHIRRING TO LIFE 

NOVA BAYFLOWER

What a mess.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Gerald’s not known for his cleaning skills.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

What are we here for?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Several things, start with his clothing over there if you would. Grab one of those boxes and gather as much of his clothing as you’re comfortable carrying. I have to look for his backup files.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Sure thing.

SOUND: GATHERING OF THINGS, LOOKING THROUGH BOXES AND CABINETS, RUMMAGING 

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Tell me more about the rumors on the lower tiers.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

It’s not good. We have a colleague that lives in the lower tiers but our communication with him has been cut off. The last time we heard from him he mentioned that all their livestock was dead and there were riots

and a lot of fighting over the existing food supply. He was fearing for his life so we told him to get out of there but we haven’t heard from him since.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

What are they doing for food?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(PAUSE)

I have no idea but I fear the worse.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Does the council know?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

They know, they just don’t care because it doesn’t effect them.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

(SARCASTICALLY)

Thoughts and prayers.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Thoughts and prayers.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Why isn’t anyone going down there to help them?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

We only have a handful of lifts working and I’m not sure if any of them are capable of even accessing the lower tiers anymore. The ladders and steps on those levels are falling apart too since noone maintains them anymore.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

My god, what are we evolving into?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Devolving would be more accurate. The council is only concerned with their agenda, they couldn’t give a damn less about the people they’re supposed to be serving. (PAUSE)

Ok, here it is. SOUND: DOOR OPENING 

NOVA BAYFLOWER

What’s that?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

It’s Gerald’s personal hiding spot.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

It’s a whole other room! I didn’t even see the door. What’s in here?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Hold on, let me get the light.

SOUND: LIGHT SWITCH NOVA BAYFLOWER

Wow! Does that work?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

It sure does. I don’t know if there is another functioning moonshine still anywhere else on this planet, but this one works. Gerald insisted I come in here to pick some of his brew up for him. Here, have a taste.

SOUND: JUG OPENING, POURING, DRINKING 

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Woo! That’s strong!

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Ooooff, it sure is. This stuff will strip the chrome off of metal.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

Doesn’t he worry about getting caught?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Not really, Gerald’s a bit of a rebel and tries to stick it to the council whenever he can. He’s also among the last scientists we have and literally the last geologist so the council tends to leave him alone as long as he keeps delivering the information they want.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

So he’s a rebel, does he have anything to do with the revolt?

SOUND: RUMMAGING AGAIN JONAS ALDRIDGE

I can’t believe they’re instituting a draft.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

They’ve been talking about it for awhile now. They were afraid people would rebel, I guess they’re not worried about that anymore, they must be desperate.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

If they’re pulling from the workers, isn’t that going to cause problems?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Most definitely. The colony is already dangerously short on maintenance staff and now they want to deplete that more for their foolish war; oh I’m sorry, I mean "conflict". We should finish up here and...

JONAS ALDRIDGE

No idea, someone’s head is going to roll for that. The revolt is getting bolder. Harris will be infuriated.

Don’t be surprised if they send squads to search, make sure you hide anything you deem sensitive.

NOVA BAYFLOWER

I’m not worried about them, they’re bullies, I can defend myself. They supposedly ran out of bullets a long time ago for those guns they carry around.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I’m not so sure about that, I wouldn’t take their threats lightly. We better get out of here, let’s get everything back to my place.

GERALD DANIELS

I’m fine, stop worrying about me, I’ll be ok. I appreciate you taking me in like this but I don’t want to be a burden.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

You’re not a burden. You are going to be recovering for awhile and you’re not supposed to move much.

GERALD DANIELS

I understand, that works for me. You have no idea how much I wanted to have a crapper right by where I was sleeping. I always hated those walks to go pee but now, hey, I can just roll over. Genius. Oh, and the bell...

JONAS ALDRIDGE

He does realize I’m not a cyborg, doesn’t he?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I’ll cover for you. I’m sure the council in their infinite wisdom have no idea of your actual condition, just what they want it to be.

GERALD DANIELS

I’m not sending those reports with you. You have to cover for that too.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(HESITANT)

This is dangerous Gerald, but I guess I can justify the loss with the cave in. You’re putting me in a spot here. You know how I feel about the revolt.

GERALD DANIELS

I know you support it but you want to remain on the sidelines. The thing is Jonas, there will come a time where you’ll have to choose a side and commit to action with the way things are going. We can’t go on like this.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I’ll do what I can.

GERALD DANIELS

I think it’s time you met the revolt leader.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Look, I really don’t want...

GERALD DANIELS

You’re the only one I trust to deliver the information in my report. I can’t get around too well as you know and he can’t come here.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(HESITANT)

Ok, I guess. But this can’t become a regular thing, they’re watching me.

GERALD DANIELS

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Well then you should understand that part of his spinal column was crushed which leaves him a bit immobile at the moment.

COUNCIL SEAT HARRIS

He has a wheel chair, does he not?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

He sure does. And when the pain subsides enough and his wounds have healed a bit more, he’ll be ready for that wheelchair but for now, he’s still in bed and will remain there until he’s ready. He passed along his findings to me verbally which I will share with you today.

COUNCIL SEAT HARRIS

I see. Well, we’ll be sending prayers for a speedy recovery.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I see the council has updated the chambers again. Very nice! This is much more opulent than the last time you updated the place.

We certainly didn’t bring you here for a critique of interior decorations; shall we get on to Dr. Daniel’s findings please? We have much to discuss with you...

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Surely. As you know, Dr. Daniel’s latest report was destroyed during the cave in along with any backups. He remembered the majority of the detail which he relayed to me. Suffice it to say, we’re dealing with a ticking clock in regard to our longevity on this planet.

COUNCIL SEAT HARRIS

Let’s stick to the facts please and leave any conjecture out of it.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Ok, well, the facts are that the cracks in the colony walls are getting deeper and making the structure less stable. He recorded a crack in tier 5 that has grown by at least another 50 feet from its original size. Dr.

Daniel’s detected radiation spikes in tiers 2, 5, 6, and 10 from leaks due to the cracks. He’s discovered significant increases in seismic activity coming from below which is weakening structural integrity from the lower tiers on up.

COUNCIL SEAT HARRIS

After further discussion, we believe some of this could be alleviated by applying more braces to the areas that

I understand. Dr. Daniels went on to voice further concern about the fact that we’re not getting information from the lower tiers anymore and we both have no idea how conditions are holding up below tiers

COUNCIL SEAT HARRIS

The lower tiers are doing just fine. No need to concern yourself about them. Our primary concern are tiers 50 and higher.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Fine. Dr. Daniels did also suggest that the stabilizers supporting tier 2, sector 1 need to be replaced and that we should be starting to make decisions about evacuating some of the tiers to lessen stress where...

Yes. We had the workers seal off that area of the excavation until we can figure out how to exploit our discovery.

You intend to enrich uranium for use?

COUNCIL SEAT HARRIS

Yes! Enrich it! That’s the word I was looking for. That’s why you’re the expert Dr. Aldridge. We want to use the uranium as a power source and if possible, we’re interested in weaponizing the substance for our protection.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

With all due respect to the council, I can’t express how bad of an idea this is. Our protection won’t mean anything if the uranium were to destabilize and...

I’m sure you and your colleagues can figure it out.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

We don’t have the proper equipment or knowledge to work with such dangerous material. Need I remind the council that this is exactly the kind of path we took on the surface with nuclear energy and you all know where that lead.

COUNCIL SEAT HARRIS

JONAS ALDRIDGE
