We catch a quick moment of real life at the playground, then a simple car ride with the windows down flips a switch and pulls me straight back to childhood. I talk through why nostalgia hits so hard, how sensory memories work, and the one family car memory that still feels crystal clear.
• recording outside while my son plays
• an old reliable car with no A/C
• the wind through open windows as a memory trigger
• growing up with windows you crank by hand
• why smells and sensations bring back full scenes
• a vivid flashback to my dad’s Nissan and family drives

What nostalgic thing have you done recently or that has hit you recently that you’re like, man, that takes me back.

Welcome Back And Quick Check In

Hey guys, welcome back to Coffee with a Twist with Madam Balloon. Hope you guys are enjoying your week and your day and the weather. Not you know, where depending on where you're located, I would like to think that most places right now are warming up or been warm. But um, yeah, it is beautiful outside. Um, if you can't hear, I'm at the playground again. My son has a two-hour um delay tomorrow, so figure we come out here and get some energy out. Um stay up a tad bit later, things like that. So we are out here just enjoying the the sun and the breeze. I had a very nostalgic moment that happened um on my way here. Um, you know, has that ever happened to you like something might happen, a smell or something? You're like, man, that takes me back. So it's this is just something kind of corny, but um, so one of my vehicles, the one I'm drove here, is it's old, it's a 2003, and it's old, and um, it needs AC, it needs heat, it needs many things, cosmetic-y and others, but it's the most reliable car I've ever had, you know. It it's a good car, even the new cars that I've had, it's like that car just does me right, so I'm always you know taking that car. So, anyway, so it doesn't have AC and stuff. So, what I did was um, you know, I have the windows down, you know, and it was just nice. The wind is blowing, you hear all the wind coming in the car. My son's in the back, probably like, what the hell? Because I'm not gonna lie, normally, like when I do drive, like when the other cars I have on the AC. Um, sometimes I have like maybe my window down some, but it's never where you like have all the windows down and the wind is just coming into the car. I've like never had that, so it was really nice because I remember being a kid, and you know, the cars were different back then where they would have to like literally like wind up the windows and things like that. It was not power and stuff that kind of kind of came later, so you would have like the windows down and things like that. Depends on what car you're in, what car your parent had, things like that. So it was a very nostalgic moment for me. I was like, oh my god, like it just took me back. Like it was, it was it was so nice to like feel that. And I'm like looking back at Eli, I'm like, this is the life right here. Like, I was like, Eli, I remember doing this and like kind of like sticking my head out the window and like my hand and letting my hand like go to the wind and stuff. It was so nice, it was very um nice to be taken back that way. I was like, wow, as I was telling Eli kind of about it and how um, you know, you know, kind of what I just told you, like my growing up and how this is kind of like how we did, you know, we would pretty much no AC put the windows down, you know. That that was the thing, wind them down, shall I say. It wasn't even powered till later, but yeah, just you know, nostalgia is great, you know. It sometimes it gives you some of the best memories, you know. And um, I just wanted to share that with you guys. Like, you know, what nostalgic thing have you done recently or that has hit you recently that you're like, man, that takes me back. You know, sometimes it's just a smell or an action that happens, and you're like, man, this is cool, and it takes you back to that period in time, and you just can kind of like remember everything about it and the moment, the smell, the taste, the everything, the feeling of it, and it's it's just cool, you know. And that was a good one because um the memory that came to mind for me is my dad, his um brown niece son. Um he loved that car. He thought he was sharp in that car, he thought he was Martin Lawrence in that car boy, and um, you know, it had his shades on and stuff, and you know, I remember we driving to Rockville to my uncle's and stuff, and my grandfather's to visit with family, and you know, windows down, he had tents on the window and stuff, and um it was just nice. Um, I don't remember what type of Nissan, like you know what I mean? Like Nissan, what I don't know. I it will probably come to me, but that's the memory I got. And I even know like the outfit my dad had on. It was like back in the day, remember with the um the two-piece sets that look like Hawaii basically. It was that set on with his black and gold glasses. My son is ready to go, guys. So I'm gonna stop it there. This is a very quick episode. All done. This is a very quick episode, so I'm gonna jump off, but nostalgia. I'll be back on, I'll do something, but I'm definitely gonna put this one up, even though it's only like six minutes. Thank you for joining. Thank you for for listening. You're here with Madam Balou, Coffee with a Twist.
