A Month With A Tesla Model Y

A month after buying a pre-owned Tesla Model Y, the honeymoon phase turns into something more useful: real-world lessons you only learn once you’re charging, commuting, and living with the car day after day. We talk honestly about what we love so far, what surprised us, and what we wish we knew earlier, especially for anyone shopping the electric vehicle market because gas prices keep climbing.
We get into the everyday experience first, including why we chose to tint the windows and how the Model Y’s glass-heavy design changes visibility and comfort. Then we dig into safety and driver awareness, because the Tesla alert style feels different than other newer cars we drive, with fewer beeps and warnings unless you’re already close. If you’re comparing vehicles, this is the kind of detail that can matter as much as range or acceleration.
From there, it’s all about the money and the setup. We share what charging costs looked like before we had home charging, how much we’ve spent so far, and why installing an EV wall connector can be the biggest “welcome to EV ownership” moment, especially in an older home. We walk through the install options, why we picked the permanent route that required digging and running lines outside, and why we chose a Tesla-certified electrician for peace of mind. We also break down Tesla subscription costs like connectivity and the self-driving trial, plus why a $100/month assisted driving price can feel steep if you only want it for road trips.
If you’re thinking about a Tesla, a Model Y, or any EV with home charging, this is a grounded look at total cost of ownership, charging routines, and the little decisions that make EV life easier. Subscribe for more real-life updates, share this with a friend who’s EV-curious, and leave a review telling us: what would you want to know before buying your first electric car?

Hey guys. Welcome back to Coffee with a Twist. You're here with Madame Balou. I hope you are having an excellent week. Looking forward to your long three-day weekend for Memorial Day. You know, some people may not be experiencing a three-day weekend, depending on the line of work you're on, uh that you're in and the company you work for, but either way, looking forward to the weekend. I know I am. Um I have been battling a sore throat last week and into this week the sore throat was better, but then I had a cough. Um so my throat hurts from coughing. Last night was the first night I didn't like cough like all night. Like I might have coughed a couple of times and then I was able to sleep very peacefully. And um, today is probably the first day that I didn't cough during the day. And since I'm saying that, knock on wood, hopefully I won't cough during this call or this recording, shall I say. Um, but yeah, so my voice, my throat, it's just shot. So it won't be a very long episode, but I did want to get on here because, like I said, part of my vision board, I'm trying to be more intentional with this and really get back to getting content out to you all a few times a month. As you know, last year it was months that would go by before I put out anything, and I'm just trying to do better. And I thank you all for supporting me, listening to me. I'm gaining new viewers, um, which is so nice. I mean, it's just so uh surreal and cool, the world we live in now. Like, you know, you have people across the country tuning in, and you know, that's just that's just cool to me. Like people want to hear me. I I just love that, and um, I'm just so happy you guys are supporting me, listening to me, commenting. Um, you know, keep it up, please. It it helps motivate me. So, and again, you guys know I just get on here and I don't know, talk. I don't, you know, it's random stuff, but I'm sure if I'm going through it, you're going through it, you know, or if I'm seeing it, you're seeing it, you know. And some things aren't happening happening directly to you, but you might know someone or see something, you know. So yeah, it's um yeah, it's just nice. It's just nice when I'm looking on my stats to see people from all over the world listening and tuning in. So um please keep it up and spread the word as much as you want. I say that and then I'm like, I'm not polished, guys. I'm not like some of these uh podcasts. And will I ever be? I don't know, but you know, I gotta do what's comfortable for me right now. And this, you know, is my I enjoy this, so um thank you. Cause I know I'm not polished at all. You could listen to a podcast that's much like cleaner, crisp, you know, all the things, and you guys choose to listen to me. So thank you. But as promised, if you guys listen to my last episode, it was about my Tesla buying experience. So this episode, I told you guys I would talk to you all, like give you an update um about the car, as well as like it the getting the EV wall connector, my voice connector in installed. So that's what I'm here to do. So it will probably be a short, sweet um episode, but I'm doing as promised. And please, let me caveat
Quick Life Update And Why I’m Back
SPEAKER_01it. I am not a Tesla sponsor, I do not get paid for this. Um, and again, I would like to think this is I do not know. I'm my the brand of EV I brought is a Tesla. I know there's a lot of EVs out there. I can only assume that other EVs are similar, and the experience is probably just as good. I have a couple of friends that don't have Teslas that have other EVs and they love it. So I am just speaking from my buying experience, my experience in the EV market, and the brand of vehicle that I ended up buying. And it and it was a Tesla. So I'm again not here sponsoring, but if Tesla would like me to sponsor, you know, hit me up. I I would love to. Um, but yeah, so I just want to give you like, you know, some updates if anyone, especially with the way gas prices are looking, you might want to tap in that market. You know, again, this is new to me as well, even though I've been eyeing it for a while. So go back to my previous episode if you want to know kind of the buying experience. And if you have additional questions or you know, comments, please click the fan mail. If you look in any of the episodes, there's a link that says fan mail and it comes directly to me. So I would be the one responding to you, not uh not AI, not a robot, it will be me. Um, and depending on the questions I get or comments I get, I might pop back on here and just do an episode and explain it at all. So please use that resource, you know, especially if you're really, you know, looking into getting into the EV space. So let's get started because if I talk too much, I will start coughing. So last I told you guys, we purchased one. So it's been about three weeks going on four weeks that we've owned it to where we're actually driving it daily, things to that nature. I did go get my windows, tint it. Um, I would suggest it, me personally, because it's a lot of glass. Um, you definitely can see all around you. The drive, you know how like sometimes you're in a car. Like for me, once I went to an SUV, I was like, I'll never go back to a car, even though I know my Model Y is more considered a SUV, um, like crossover almost. I would say. I always like I'll never go back to a car, but driving in the Tesla Model Y, um, I can see all around me. I don't feel real low to the ground. It it definitely has a lot of glass. So I would suggest tinting your windows. It's each its own. When I did receive the car, the two back windows um and the very back rear um window was already tinted. So all I got done are my two fronts, and I got a strip across the front because the windshield is pretty, you know, big. Like I said, you really can see around you, which is so nice. So I did do that. Um, we drive it pretty much daily. And my husband, I've been nice enough to let him drive it to work for his commute. So he has saved a lot of money with gas, and I'll get into that in a moment. Um, so so far the update is I freaking love it. Um, I still find myself doing a little research on it, you know, learning things about it. Um, if this and that is normal, you know, things like I might experience. I'm like, is this how it's supposed to do? You know, and it's like, yes. Um,
Why I’m Sharing A Tesla Update
SPEAKER_01yes, no, whatever. The drive is still very good, smooth. It gives you the speed you need. Um, the acceleration is good. I love the braking mechanism. Um, it it's a good car. Um, I know they say it's like the safest car on the road. I don't know. I I can't speak to that, and I don't hope I never have to find out really. I'm sure it is safe, you know. It seems like it's safe, it has all the bells and whistles. Um one thing I noticed like that the Tesla doesn't, I don't know about the newer Teslas. Remember, I have mine is a 2020. Um, I don't have the new ones. Um I don't know if the newer ones like have more beeping. So, like, for instance, when we drive, when I drive like the Hellcat or our um, you know, we have we have more than just the Tesla. We have a couple of cars, but when I drive some of our other newer cars, it has like the beeps and the and the um, what do you call like if someone's near me, like coming up on the side, the little light on the side of the mirror will come up. Uh, the Tesla, to me, at least the version I'm driving, I don't hear it, doesn't do a lot of beeps and like light things coming up, unless, like, let's say if I'm going to like park or I get too close to a car, it will like try to take over and like say, hey, you know, hey, you know, you're close. But it what am I trying to say? What I'm I feel like other cars are a little bit more sensitive to what's around it. I feel like you get beeps when you're not even that close. Versus the Tesla, I feel like you gotta be a lot closer before you get like the beeps or your car tries to take over. And again, it could be the year I have. Again, I have an older model. You know, I know it evolves all the time, or software updates, etc. But like when I first got it, like I was expecting like when I'm driving, and let's say a car in front of me comes to a stop at a stop sign or stop light. I'm used to like my other car as I'm approaching, let's say, maybe not full-blown, like going, it it kind of like would stop me. You know, my car would my like infinity would like stop me. Um the Tesla, like I feel like, you know,
Daily Driving Impressions And Window Tint
SPEAKER_01you could borderline almost hit someone because it doesn't really alert you, in my opinion, quick. It's not till you're like already like up on the car, in my opinion. And it could be my settings. I don't know, it could be because my car is older. So that you know, is a little different from me than my other cars. Um, I just feel like the sensor on that stuff is delayed, maybe, or like the range for it, I feel, should be a little bit broader than it is. I don't know. But suppose the safest car on the market. Don't know. Um, but I love it. I freaking love it. I would definitely buy another one. Again, this is me speaking after about four weeks of having it. Um, we have saved a lot of money on gas. Um, and especially this month was a measure because we didn't have the EV hooked up at home yet. We literally just got that hooked up this week. So um, my husband was filling up his tank every other day at like 70 and 80 bucks. We have only spent 160 bucks since the day we got it to now, and that doesn't just include the commute, um, it just in general, and I say that's not bad because we had no charger at home, so anytime we had to charge, it was always outside of the home. So we just got the EV installed Monday, Tuesday, and um, so now we charge home at home every night, and my husband charges we you know on on the way home from work because he goes a lot of miles, so he has to charge in between to be able to really make it. Um, so our that 160 bucks should now be like cut in half because we don't have to charge always out of the house, and on weekends, we won't have to charge outside of the house at all unless we're going someplace far, which we typically are just kind of around town. So you get low, you come on back home. You you know what I mean? Um, so so far, love it. We did get
Safety Alerts Feel Different Than Other Cars
SPEAKER_01the EV installed. Um, that was a little more of a challenge, not really a challenge, but a bigger, you know, our bigger cost was because um our house is an older house built early 2000s, so EV wasn't a thing because I know some of the newer houses now they have built-in EV stuff or even the hookup for it, you know. So we didn't so we only had we had like two, three options. One option was that they could make holes all through my house from the basement panel all the way up. Second option was you could do like the dryer buddy where you buy this thing, you put the dryer thing in, and it shares the ampage with the dryer. Not the best recommended one, or they could dig up my front yard, um, go from the paneling on the side of my house, bring it all the way around, up through my driveway, under the sidewalk, into the fire flower bed, and then onto the gar outdoor, um, the garage, like the siding on the garage, because we don't use our garage for what you're supposed to use your garage for, and that's for your cars. We don't use it for that, we use it to hang out in and sit around and store a bunch of junk. So we needed our charger to be outside of the garage because we use our driveway for the cars. So they came, um, they had to do some digging. The missus miss uh utility had to come out, and they had to do all their markings for all the utility companies so that nothing gets hit. And the um company we use did an excellent job. Actually, when I get off this um recording, I need to write them up a quick uh five-star review. They did an excellent job. Um, they took it even further. Like, they um did the job, got someone to inspect the work, and then had their drywall person come and like put all the drywall back. So I did tell you about three options, and you're probably wondering, okay, she didn't say which one she picked. Of course, I picked the one that was just you know crazy to do. Um but gives resale value to the house, etc. So I did the one where they had to dig up my front yard and run it under the ground and under the sidewalk. So, of course, I picked the most expensive one. Okay. So that's what I picked just for, I just felt it was the better one to go with. Um, we plan to be in this house for a long time. Um it's just like if you're gonna do it, do it right. Even though the dryer one wasn't a bad idea, but you know, let's say someone else is using the dryer, you know, and don't know. And I just didn't want to go through sharing
What We Spend Charging Versus Gas
SPEAKER_01that outlet with anything. So I just felt it should be on its own. So we went with the one where they dig up the back um the front yard and all that. It's okay. Um, the grass will grow back. So that's the option we went with. And um, it's permanent, you know, it's there, we always have it, even and it's nice for even our guests if anyone comes. Because we have a couple of family rooms that got EVs, maybe not a Tesla, but they're in that EV space. Guess what? They can use it. So um that is the option we went with. So, yes, um upfront costs, which is I talked about this in the last episode to a degree. So the upfront uh costs for getting into the EV space, especially if you're in my similar situation where like you know, you have a maybe an older home or um you might have a townhouse or whatever the case may be, just getting the install for the EV can can be some cost on top of like your down payment and things like that. But also keep in mind they typically like I I and I'm I I have seen, let me say this, because again, I did not buy mine brand new, but I do know that um sometimes when you buy the car brand new, you get like some packages and stuff and
Home Charger Install Options For Older Homes
SPEAKER_01some things that come with it. What I mean by that is so, and this is not just Teslets, other car, other EV spaces, you know, brands as well. Um say you buy 2026, 2027, uh EV. Sometimes they have deals where, okay, maybe three years you get, you know, unlimited charges or something. Um, you know, little things like that. So I say that to say, let's say you want to get into the space, but you're like, I don't want to have to install, you know, an EV system in my house and all of that, or at my townhouse and get the pedal. That's why I say in the townhouses, you gotta probably still kind of dig, but then you gotta put it on like um a pedal thing, that's what they call it, so that it could sit, you know, um at the parking lot, you know, at your space, um, your assigned space. So, and I don't know if you gotta get your HOA involved, I I'm not sure. Um, but yeah, it's just different than like putting it on the actual house. But if you want to get into that space, you know, it might be worth buying a brand new one because if especially you can get a deal where you can get like unlimited charging for a certain amount of years, because guess what? You won't be paying anything because you can just go to get it charged wherever, whenever for the three years, or you know, and that way also you're deciding do I like it? Do I want to go the extra mile going ahead and getting it in my house when the three years is up, or you know, things like that. And it's just um so that could be an option going new because they might have other promotions they can give you. You know, might be, I don't know, and again, I'm speaking Tesla right now. I mean, the other EV space might have different names and stuff for it because you do need like the Tesla's great, but there are subscriptions that you may want to have to make it worth kind of having a Tesla, if that makes sense. Like, for instance, my husband likes to see all the other cars and likes to see all the stuff that's around him that's going on. Well, to be able to do that, you have to pay ten dollars a month for the um it's called connectivity, Tesla connectivity something. And again, I may be jacking that up. Um, but it's like $10 a month, and it includes like music. It's my son. Music, it includes that visual that we see on the screen, and I agree, I like it too. So there's some things, and and it also like the wireless hotspot um and internet that's in the car. That $10 includes that. So, um, or I mean if you don't have it, that's fine. The car is still good, but then like if you want to listen to like certain music and stuff, you gotta connect your phone, which is not a big deal because you probably do that anyway in your cars and stuff, you know, your regular car that's not electric. So I'm not saying you have to have it, but for me, if I'm gonna have my Tesla, I kind of want the full experience, me personally. Um, what I don't like about it, they have like the self-driving function, assisted driving function, whatever it's called. So for mine, I got a um 30-day trial period like for free from purchasing it to test it out, which mind you, I have not even tried it yet. But I will keep it on there. I'm gonna keep it on there at least through the end of June because we're going on a trip
Why We Chose The Most Expensive Route
SPEAKER_01the beginning of June, and I will probably use it then. But I would love to have that on there, and from what I've been hearing, that used to come kind of standard with the car. Well, now it's like a hundred bucks a month, it's twelve hundred dollars a year. That's a lot of money. Um, so I do wish, I'm hoping enough people don't subscribe to it that maybe they'll rethink the cost of it. Like, I know I'm gonna sound like, oh, that's too cheap, but honestly, I feel like it that should be like 30 bucks a month. I know some people were saying 50. I get that, but No, I feel it should be more like 30 bucks a month because you have that expense plus the connectivity. That's that's 40 bucks a month for a car that the main reason why you're getting it is to save on gas. You get what I'm saying? So I don't even think it should be 50. I think even 50 bucks a month is a little steep, especially because not everyone that has a Tesla commutes. Like someone that commutes and drive, you know, more than 20 miles or whatever for work, I get them having the self-driving because they kind of they would need that. But not everyone that has a Tesla. I'm pretty sure if they do like market analysis or something, I'm sure a lot of them don't have a commute daily. So for a person like myself who loves the car but still wants that on there, for when I do have here and there go on road trips, I don't want to pay a hundred dollars for a road trip, like for the self-driving for a long drive that I might only even do once a month. You get what I'm saying? To me, it's not worth the hundred dollars. I think thirty dollars would be a good sweet spot because you have that plus the connectivity. So you're looking around 40 to 50 bucks a month for both things after taxes and things, you know. That's just my take. I don't know, but um that's a great function, but it just costs a lot. So after June, and the good thing about it, you can put it on and off, but still, like even though I'm keeping it on until June, till the end of June, I'm keeping it on just for this one trip, you know. The rest of the month I won't even be using it, you know. So it's kind of like uh because pretty much um the self-driving mode. If you guys are like, why the self-driving mode is very similar to um pretty much cruise control with a little bit more of the car doing the work. Um so think about it this way with it to like understand where I'm getting at that I'm like struggling to describe. Think to yourself, typically when you use or if you've even used
New EV Perks Like Free Charging Deals
SPEAKER_01it, the cruise control on your regular cars is typically for like long road trips or trips, just in general, just longer, longer drives. That's just really what it is, not around town. So if that cruise control for you to use it was $100 a month, but you only maybe go on long drives maybe six times a year, do you feel it's worth paying twelve hundred dollars a year for? The answer is probably no. So that's pretty much what I'm getting at. That's what it's equivalent to, pretty much cruise control. For someone who drives around town to pay $100 a month for something that you won't use that often, I think it's steep. I feel $30 is a good sweet spot, especially when you have other subscriptions that you have with the car. I won't say need, I kind of feel like you need the connectivity, honestly, to get the full experience of the Tesla. I can't speak for other EV brands, but this is what I'm speaking for for Tesla. That's how theirs is set up. Another EV brand may be different, they might not have add-ons. It might be you get the car, and it's all included with what you do, you know, everything you see. I do not know. Um, I can honestly say I did not shop around in the sense like, let me compare this EV to this EV to this EV. I did not do that. Um, I knew I was getting in the EV space and I only looked at Tesla. Don't get me wrong, I looked at like Genesis and stuff, but I didn't compare or anything like that. I literally knew if I got an EV, I was getting a Tesla. Like, so the only research I did was on Tesla. So take what I'm saying with a grain of salt for other brands. I don't know. Also, take what I'm saying of a grain of salt if you're getting a brand new Tesla, because they probably have I've heard and have seen they have like different packages. I know some people that get like lifetime supercharges and stuff, you know. I don't know, but again, I wasn't paying $50 and $60,000 for my car either. So mine is a pre-owned, you know, so it didn't come with any like big packages or anything when I purchased it. So just take what I'm saying for a grain of salt. What I'm talking about is mostly the pre-owned buying experience for Tesla and where I'm at right now. But yeah, so the upfront cost is there because you know you pay your deposit, you pay your down payment on the car. If you don't have an EV hookup, you have to buy the the actual uh wall connector yourself through Tesla. I did see they have aftermarket ones that you can get on Amazon and different car places that are cheaper than the Tesla price. I can't speak to those if they work well or not, because I just again, this is my first time in the EV space, so I've been kind of doing everything through its brand. And you know, that's just I don't know enough about it to be like, oh yeah, just get this. Yeah, my window tints. Yes, I went through, you know, a regular person, you know, nearby, even though Tesla offers window tinting, it does cost more, you know. So um I can't speak to the other things that might be a little cheaper, but um, but yeah, so you have to buy the wall charger, you have to get an electrician to install it. I got so you could get really any certified electrician to install your at-home connector. I went through a Tesla certified electrician
Tesla Subscriptions And The Self Driving Price
SPEAKER_01to get it installed. Not saying you have to do the same thing. I did again my first time in the EV space. It's weird, a little scary. I like just want to do everything through like Tesla almost just because I would hate like something goes wrong with it, and it's because I went the cheap route. Not saying that cheaper isn't sometimes good, but I don't know enough and haven't been in the space long enough to know that okay, I could go with this wall unit, or I could just go with this electrician. I just want it to do things the way Tesla prefers it to be done. Let's say that. Not saying my way is the right way and someone else's is not. This is just my comfort level. I just rather do it with the brand. So it did cost a lot more for upfront, but in the long run, I can definitely see the savings as long as the car um holds up to how it says. I mean, pretty much I've been doing research, and you know, people are like, there's some people had their car three, four years, and they're like, Have you had to do anything? Has it been in the shop for anything? They're like thinking, they're like, No, nothing, not even brakes, because they're regenerative um brakes. Um, you might hear one or two people, oh yeah, I had to get new tires, you know, that's normal. But they're like, To a repair shop? No. So you get what I'm saying? So in five, in four years, I'll even say three years, you know, you'll see the worth in it because just for the very fact there's no oil changes. Um, I would think probably at some point, you know, probably wiper blades and tires are the things that I see that you would have to maybe get ever so often within this three years that I'm giving myself. But everything else, nothing. The car takes care of itself, so yeah, there is some upfront. But the thing is, I've from my experience thus far, I feel like I will stay in the EV market. I will always probably have at least one car that's an EV. The good thing about it is I've already done all the standard things and the things that are here, so even when I buy my next one, I won't feel the upfront cost as bad because I won't have to get something installed. I won't this, yeah, I'll just have a car payment potentially, but I won't have a lot of upfront cost like I did with this one because it's my first time in the in its space. It's just that's just kind of how it is. Kind of like when you buy a new house or rent a new house, and the space is different than your last house. Sometimes you got to get new furniture because, like, for instance, when we moved in
Wall Connector Costs And Using Certified Electricians
SPEAKER_01this house, my furniture from my um condo looked very weird in this house because it was it was small furniture. You know, you don't even realize I thought it was so large, so we ended up putting my condo um furniture all in the basement because the basement had like lower ceilings and things like that. And over time we brought new furniture because the furniture that my husband had, even from his house, was just it just looked weird in this house. It was it needs to be larger scale. So that's I'm pretty much saying that to say like anything when you get into any new space, especially a space you haven't been into before, sometimes you just you gotta spend out a little to get it where it where you want it to be and for comfort. So um, pretty much I still love it. Glad I brought it. The best buying experience that I've had thus far with buying a car. I feel like all dealerships should operate this way. Um sorry, car salesman, because that would really cut your your industry back by a lot, you know, as far as jobs. But yes, it is um it's great. It it's I freaking love it. I freaking love it. That is my update a month later. Um, again, I'm not sponsored. I only can really speak about Tesla and my buying experience on a pre-owned Tesla. Um I will give you guys an update in a few months um after we've had it a little bit longer. We're gonna take it on its first road trip and see how that is. I do feel that will be a little different because you have to stop, and when you do stop to charge, it's not a quick five minutes pump and go. You gotta sit for a little, which you know, when you're on a long road trip, it could make you tired, but it's kind of nice. It's I will say, even when I was charging at the superchargers and stuff, it was nice to like take a break and just relax for a minute. It like forces you to chill. I do like that. Even my husband likes that as well. So even though we want to get down the road, I'm curious how our stops will be because that is something we're not used to, especially when you're just ready to go. And sometimes that 20-30 minutes of sitting to charge can make you a little sleepy, but you know what? Take that time to maybe a nice little quick power nap. So that could be we're gonna see. So maybe I will give you another update on the road trip with the car. How about that? I'll do that, and then you won't have to keep hearing about the new Tesla uh for a while, and I'll give like a six-month update and then a one-year, and then you can stop hearing about it. But, anyways, I wanted to do this episode because I told you guys I would give you an update on it. Um, a month out, and my experience of getting everything installed, etc. Highly recommend it. Um, one thing I forgot to mention definitely, if you do get one, talk to your electric company. They have um programs for people who have EVs and hooking it up at home. They give like incentives, sometimes they give like a rebate of a certain amount, as well as a percentage, like a couple of cents off when you are charging, and they have you know off-peak and things like that, so you can set your schedule and your app for it to charge. So um definitely reach out to your electric company um to help so that your bill doesn't increase too much. Most people I've spoken to have said, and research I have done, a lot of people say they've I've had some people say they've didn't even really see a change in their um bill, and could be, you know, also they might be only charging on an off-peak. And then I've had some people that say at most they might have seen like a $20 or $30 difference in their bill of an increase. So I don't know. We will find out here soon. But um, yeah, so that is my update, and I have to stop talking because I feel my throat and things getting just uh, but yes, that is part two of the buy-in experience and um the update of how I like the car and the update on the install of the EV uh wall connector. So yes, I love it so far. Um yeah, I could I could see me buying another one. I could actually see us having two EVs in my driveway. Yeah, that's that's where I'm at right now. So I'm not doing that though, but I'm just saying I could see that. Like, if Tesla did want me to sponsor, feel free. They can, you know, maybe send the Cybertruck my way. Then I really would have two out there, but um definitely
