Episode 21 - A question of identity? (The Michael Donohue story)

Matt Divall Season 2 Episode 21

This episode is a conversation with Michael Donohue; a footballer who was scouted by Everton FC from a young age and played in their academy system for a number of years. Fast forward to present day and we discuss the challenges of early specialisation and focusing on one thing to the extent that striving for the best performance became obsessive.

Michael speaks frankly and very openly about the struggle with the loss of identity he felt, challenges around his depression and his general mental health and an accompanying eating disorder. We talk about transitions after being released, having an outlet to go along with being a football professional (or full time athlete) and  we discuss where Michael is now (currently playing for FC United of Manchester and running his own personal training business), his love for Ralph, his reflections on his experiences and his future aspirations.

The lessons from this episode are relevant across all sports and is one you should check out. A top lad...
