Bereans Corner
Speaker 1:

Welcome to Berean's Corner, the podcast where we go through books of the Bible chapter by chapter and verse by verse, Wherever you are in the world. Thank you for joining. Grab a glass of water, a cup of coffee or tea and let's get into today's lesson. Welcome back and thank you for joining me. Open your Bible to Numbers, chapter 15. The title of today's lesson is Laws for Canaan. As always, we will bring the reader up and we will read through the chapter. Now it's a. It's a little lengthy 41 verses and all. But as always, I believe it's important to get the to read the scripture first and then to expound on the text. So numbers 15 and let's read numbers 15.

Speaker 2:

The lord said to moses speak to the Israelites and say to them After you enter the land I am giving you as a home and you present to the Lord offerings made by fire from the herd or the flock as an aroma pleasing to the Lord, whether burnt offerings or sacrifices, for special vows or freewill offerings or festival offerings, then the one who brings his offering shall present to the Lord a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a quarter of a hin of oil. With each lamb for the burnt offering or the sacrifice. Prepare a quarter of a hin of wine as a drink offering. With a ram, prepare a grain offering of two tenthtenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a third of a hin of oil and a third of a hin of wine as a drink offering. Offer it as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. When you prepare a young bull as a burnt offering or sacrifice, for a special vow or a fellowship offering to the Lord, bring with the bull a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah fine flour mixed with half a hin of oil. Also, bring half a hin of wine as a drink offering. It will be an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the Lord. Each bull or ram, each lamb or young goat is to be prepared in this manner. Do this for each one, for as many as you prepare. Everyone who is native born must do these things in this way. When he brings an offering made by fire as an aroma pleasing to the Lord For the generations to come, whenever an alien or anyone else living among you presents an offering made by fire as an aroma pleading to the Lord, he must do exactly as you do. The community is to have the same rules for you and for the alien living among you. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. You and the aliens shall be the same before the Lord. The same laws and regulations will apply both to you and to the alien living among you. The Lord said to Moses Speak to the Israelites and say to them when you enter the land to which I am taking you and you eat the food of the land, present a portion as an offering to the Lord. Present a cake from the first of your ground meal and present it as an offering from the threshing floor Throughout the generations to come. You are to give this offering to the Lord from the first of your ground meal.

Speaker 2:

Now, if you unintentionally fail to keep any of these commands the Lord gave Moses any of the Lord's commands to you through him, from the day the Lord gave them and continuing through the generations to come, and if this is done unintentionally, without the community being aware of it, then the whole community is to offer a young bull for a burnt offering as an aroma pleasing to the Lord, along with its prescribed grain offering and drink offering and a male goat for a sin offering. The priest is to make atonement for the whole Israelite community and they will be forgiven, for it was not intentional and they have brought to the Lord for their wrong an offering made by fire and a sin offering. The whole Israelite community and the alien living among them will be forgiven because all the people were involved in the unintentional wrong. But if just one person sins unintentionally, he must bring a year-old female goat for a sin offering. The priest is to make atonement before the Lord for the one who erred by sinning unintentionally and when atonement has been made for him, he will be forgiven. One and the same law applies to everyone who sins unintentionally, whether he is a native-born Israelite or an alien. But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or alien, blasphemes the Lord, and that person must be cut off from his people because he has despised the Lord's word and broken His commands, that person must surely be cut off. His guilt remains on him.

Speaker 2:

While the Israelites were in the desert, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, and they kept him in custody because it was not clear what should be done to him. Then the Lord said to Moses the man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp. So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the Lord commanded Moses.

Speaker 2:

The Lord said to Moses Speak to the Israelites and say to them Throughout the generations to come, you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments with a blue cord on each tassel. You will have these tassels to look at, and so you will remember all the commands of the Lord, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by going after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes. Then you will remember to obey all my commands and will be consecrated to your God. I am the Lord, your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the Lord, your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the Lord, your God all right now.

Speaker 1:

The last time we were together, we looked at the rebellion of the people. That was in numbers 14. Today, we are looking at the laws of Canaan, of Canaan and a few other things in this chapter. We will break down this chapter into seven parts. Part number one the Lord spoke to Moses. We see this in verse one. Now, the Lord spoke to Moses.

Speaker 1:

I always like to point out who God is talking to and, for any of you who may just be catching on, there is a reason why I do that, the reason why I like to always mention who the Lord is talking to and, a lot of times, who are the people he's talking to, because we have to keep this thing in his context and in his order. It is important for people to know that right here, particularly in this old Testament, the Lord is speaking to israel. He is speaking to moses, who led israel out of the land of egypt. So I always like to point that out. Which brings me to part two. Moses is commanded to speak to israel. Verse two speak to the sons of israel and say to them, when you enter the land where you are to live, which I am giving you, I always like to point out, you know, uh, I always like to point out who God tells Moses to speak to, as I mentioned in verse one. Verse one the Lord spoke to Moses. Verse two he tells Moses who to speak to. Moses is speaking to who? Verse two the sons of Part three the people are to make a soothing, a roaming offering to the Lord. We see this in verses three through 13. Then make an offering by fire to the Lord, a burnt offering or a sacrifice to fulfill a special vow, or as a free will offering, or, in your appointed times, to make a soothing aroma to the Lord from the herd or from the flock Remember, they were giving sacrifices to the Lord and the one who presents his offering shall present to the Lord a grain offering of one tenth of an ephah, a fine flour mix with one fourth of a hen of oil, and you shall prepare wine for the libation, one-fourth of a hen with the burnt offering, or for the sacrifice for each lamb, or for a man, excuse me or for a ram, you shall prepare, as a grain offering, two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with one-third of a hen of oil, and for the libation, you shall offer one third of a hand of wine as a soothing aroma to the lord. And when you prepare a bull as a burnt offering or a sacrifice to fulfill a special vow or for peace offerings to the lord, then you shall offer, with the bull, a grain offering of three tenths of an ephah of fine flour, mixed with one half a hand of oil. The lord is very particular on how these or think these things were to be done verse 10. And you shall offer, as a libation, one half a hand of wine as an offering by fire, as a soothing aroma to the lord. Thus it shall be done for each ox, or for each ram, or for each of the male lambs or of the goats, according to the number that you prepare. So you shall do for everyone, according to their number. All who are native shall do these things, in this matter, in presenting an offering by fire as a soothing aroma to the Lord, as always, the Lord gave Israel these things to do and he want these things to be done specific, as I like to point out a lot. Notice the Lord didn't say go do what you want. He gave them particular, the things that needed to be done.

Speaker 1:

Now we will talk about the law of the sojourner, and we're going to be looking at that through verses 14 through 31, part 4. The alien was to conform to you, not the other way around. We see this in verses 14 through 16. And if an alien sojourns with you, or one who may be among you throughout your generations, and he wishes to make an offering by fire as a soothing aroma to the Lord, just as you do, so he shall do. As for the assembly, there shall be one statute for you and one for the alien who sojourns with you, a perpetual statute throughout your generations, as you are, so shall the alien be before the lord. There is to be one law and one ordination for you and for the alien who's adjourns with you. What is going on here, people? The lord is saying this is what the lord is saying to his people, and it is the same for us today.

Speaker 1:

The alien or the person who was not among your land. They are to do as you do, not. You do as they do. They come into your land there, follow your rules. The same can be said for an example of a country you live in now. Uh, there are. We have six continents, you know. I'm not going to count Antarctica, because I don't really think people live there or, if they are just people, they're working. But for for sake of argument, there are six continents. This podcast has actually touched all six continents, but in each continent there is a rule in each of the countries, in each of the continents. When you are there, you are to abide by their rules, you are to conform to them. That is the same thing that is happening here. As an example, the alien that comes into the land is supposed to come in and go by your rules and your laws, not the other way around. Hope I made that pretty clear.

Speaker 1:

Part five there is a difference between intentional and unintentional disobedience. We see this in verses 17 to 31. Then the Lord spoke to Moses saying Lord, still speaking to Moses, speak to the sons of Israel and say to them when you enter the land where I bring you, then it shall be that when you eat of the food of the land, you shall lift up an offering to the Lord Of the first of your dough. You shall lift up an offering to the lord of the first of your dough. You shall lift up a cake as an offering, as the offering of the threshing floor. So you shall lift it up from the first of your dough. You shall give to the lord an offering throughout your generations. This was supposed to be done continuously.

Speaker 1:

But when you unwittingly fail and do not observe all these commandments which the Lord has spoken to Moses, even all that the Lord has commanded you through Moses, from the day when the Lord gave commandment and all were throughout your generations congregation, that all the congregation shall offer one bull for a burnt offering as a soothing aroma to the Lord, with his grain offering and its libation according to the ordinance, and one male goat for a sin offering. Then the priests shall make atonement for all the congregation of the sons of Israel and they shall be forgiven, for it was an error and they have brought their offering and offering by fire to the lord and their sin offering before the lord for their error. So all the congregation of the sons of israel will be forgiven, with the alien who sojourns among them. For it happened to all the people through error. Let's pause right there real quick. It even was going to be done to the alien, like the like the Lord just said, if it was done unintentionally Verse 27. Also, if one person sins unintentionally, then he shall offer a one year old female goat for a sin offering and the priest shall make atonement before the Lord for the person who goes astray when he sins unintentionally, making atonement for him that he may be forgiven. You shall have one law for him who does anything unintentionally, for him who is native among the sons of israel and for the alien who sojourns among them.

Speaker 1:

But the person who does anything defiantly, whether he is native or an alien, that one is blaspheming the Lord, and that person shall be cut off from among his people because he has despised the word of the Lord and has broken his commandment. That person shall be completely cut off. His guilt shall be on him. What's happening here? People is intentional and unintentional. Now, a big part of that section was dealing with intentional and unintentional. Now a big part of that section was dealing with unintentional sin, unintentional things that people may not know. Now that can happen with the person who was of the land, but it happens a lot with the person who's not of the land, because some of them they're just learning the laws and what's going on here.

Speaker 1:

But the lord is very key. If you did something defiantly, you were to be cut off from your people. Now, you and I, let's put us in this situation. There are things and you know what I just put myself in that situation. I leave you out of it. There are things that I have disobeyed of the Lord defiantly, intentionally, meaning that I know that it was wrong, I know I shouldn't be doing it, I've thought about the thing and still did it anyway. This is what the Lord is talking about. When you do something defiantly, you are to be cut off from your people. But thank God for grace, because I live in the time, in the era of grace, where we can be forgiven of these things doesn't mean that it's okay to do them. Doesn't mean that because you have that grace, you should do it. But we can be forgiven for our grace. But in this time, if I was living in this time, I would be cut off from my people because I have done something un excuse me intentionally. And the lord says that is blaspheming his name. So it was with the children of israel and a stranger who sojourned among them.

Speaker 1:

Now we will move on to the last parts and we are looking at the consequence of not obeying God's law. We see this in verses 32 through 36. Now, while the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day, and those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation and they put him in custody because it had not been declared what should be done with him. Then the lord said moses, excuse me. Then the lord said to moses, the man shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp. So all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death with stones, just as the lord had commanded. Moses now, excuse me. Now, this, you know, was a serious law for israel given by the lord. This was a serious law.

Speaker 1:

Turn back, let's. Let's look at this. Turn back to keep your finger right here in numbers, but turn back to exodus chapter. Go back to Exodus chapter 20. Let's look at this law. And when you get to Exodus chapter 20, we are going to look at verses 8 to 11. Exodus 20, starting at verse 8.

Speaker 1:

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord, your God. In it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant, or your cattle or your sojourner? Remember, we're just talking about a sojourner who stays with you. Remember, we're just talking about a sojourner who stays with you. For in six days, the lord made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. So this was a serious charge to israel. Now, remember, this man, who is one of the children of israel, is out gathering wood on the sabbath day. This man, who is one of the children of Israel, is out gathering wood on the Sabbath day, and this thing was a death penalty.

Speaker 1:

Now, since we're in Exodus, go to the right a couple of chapters and go to chapter 31, exodus 31, exodus 31, and we are looking at verses 14 and 15. Therefore, you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you, okay? Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death, for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. For six days, work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest holy to the lord. Whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death. This was a charge given to israel, and not only to israel, but to the people who were in the land. Now, this was not for listen to me, this was not for the people outside of Israel. This was for Israel and the people who were sojourning with Israel. That brings us back to Numbers, where we are, and we're going to look at part seven to finish up chapter 15.

Speaker 1:

The Lord gives Israel a reminder how to remember their holiness. We see this in verses 37 to 41. The Lord also spoke to Moses, saying the Lord is continue to speak to Moses, listen up, speak to the sons of Israel and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corner of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassels of each corner a cord of blue. Who was the Lord talking to? He's talking to Israel, and it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes. After which you played the harlot in order that you may remember to do all my commandments and be holy to your God. I am the Lord, your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt. Who did the Lord bring out of the land of Egypt, israel, to be your God. I am the Lord, your God. And the Lord gave them that as a reminder, not as a fashion statement, but to remind them of a way to remember the law. So when they look down, uh, on their, at their, at their robes, they were supposed to see that blue, those blue tassels on the end. Or when they put their robe on every day, they would see those blue tassels as a reminder of what they were to do. Okay, that brings us to the end of numbers, chapter 15.
