Healthcare leadership lessons drawn from NASA's quest to get to the Moon: A From the Earth to the Moon podcast
Show Notes

High Reliability, The Healthcare FM Podcast is brought to you by Gosselin/Martin Associates. Our show discusses the issues, challenges, and opportunities within the Facilities Management (FM) function.

This episode discusses healthcare lessons gleaned from the Tom Hanks produced  12-part miniseries, From the Earth to the Moon. Released in 1998 on HBO, the series explores the origins and milestones of the Apollo lunar landing program, its mission,  and those whose lives and careers were impacted by NASA's journey into space.

Many parallels can be drawn from NASA's quest to get to the moon to today's healthcare landscape, and we will discuss them, including:

  • Framing leadership at NASA in the 1960s and healthcare leadership in 2022;
  • Apollo 1, discussing the deadly fire and the subsequent investigation by NASA and the US Congress: How does it tie into navigating politics in healthcare and preventable patient deaths (13:00);
  • Apollo 8, the importance of imagination, and taking and minimizing risk (31:00);
  • Apollo 12, the value of the team, and examining the roles of the wives of the astronauts through  Episode 11, "The Original Wives Club" (49:30);
  •  Apollo 11, the dynamic to be the first person on the moon, and dealing promptly with "we before me" (1:00:00).

I want to thank my three guests for their time and research. The same movie crew joined me for our Band of Brothers leadership podcast released last November. Like me, they appreciate American history and the lessons learned. My guests are:

  • Thomas Elliott: Director of Facilities, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
  • Geoff Schuller: Owner, GH Schuller Consulting, Mission Viejo, CA
  • Steve Spaanbroek: CEO, MSL Healthcare Partners

Thanks for listening. We hope you enjoy it, and if you know Astronaut Frank Borman, he's mentioned often in this podcast, so ask him to please give us a listen!
