Centerville, IA - There's No Such Thing as a Free Day at the Museum

Small Town News Season 1 Episode 25

Welcome to Centerville, Iowa. Today, September 26th, would have been the 72nd annual Pancake Day celebration, but it has been postponed until 2021 due to the current pandemic.  While that means there won't be any free pancakes, parades, pageants today, we are going anyway!  Who could deny themselves a trip to this once booming coal town located near Rathbun Lake, known as "Iowa's Ocean."  In the early 20th century, many European immigrants settled in Centerville to work in the coal mines.  The town is still home to many Swedish Americans, Italian Americans, Croatian Americans, and Albanian Americans.  They even held Croatian Fest from the mid 1980s through the mid 2000s in honor of their Croatian heritage.  As the county seat of Appanoose, Centerville boasts a thriving downtown retail area centered around the Courthouse Square Historic District.  Centerville was also called home by a surprising number of notable people according to their Wikipedia page.  While we won't get any pancakes this year, we hope you still enjoy our weird little romp through Centerville!
