Episode 29: Being Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Anil Ramjiani

How do we handle being comfortable being uncomfortable? From jumping into a pool for the first time or engaging in a simple conversation, discomfort can trigger anxiety and stress.

I experienced this from a young age with family and friends,  and it reached a new level when I entered open water during my first 70.3 triathlon event. I could not throttle my emotions.

Fredrik Samanta, a coach in Zurich and a close friend, discusses this topic with me. We discuss personal examples, explore the sensations of discomfort and identify a few ways to address to embrace and overcome this 'unnerving feeling' that soon passes:

  1. Be aware - of yourself and your surroundings
  2. Breathe - through the moment
  3. Slow - your pace and get closer to the present
  4. Reset - to reconnect with your surroundings
  5. Grow - by reflecting & understanding (e.g. journalize) your responses in the moment

Know you to be you!
