Homework-FOREVER

As I have mentioned a number of times… I never really know where an inspiration for a LEARNING MOMENTS podcast may come from. But this month, I hope you can tell Homework-FOREVER was driven by the students in every one of my college classes!

Hopefully when they/you listen to this fun and important life-long applicable message… everyone will understand my Homework- FOREVER “position". And take note that I recommended a second-listen during my special podcast “DISCUSSIONIST” time. My hope is that you will take steps to truly personalize the podcast’s individual growth value.

Hello again, and welcome to the June of 2025 Inspiring Innovations Learning Moments Podcast. This is your regular discussionist host, Marv Pickla, and it is just great to say that Michigan summer has finally arrived, and that I'm spending every spare minute outside doing fresh air outside stuff. This month, though, I had drafted a a number of idea pieces that I thought would be good, inspiring innovations, topics for this month. And the learning moments that that I was considering, you know, had their own points to ponder regarding leadership and communication, professional development, and or innovation. But somehow, somehow every topic came across as maybe just a little too serious, especially leading in into these summer months. Do you know what I'm really referring to? Then, out of the blue, a former student just happened to stop by the college and just happened to say hi and that he was starting a fun, good summertime job. But somehow, then he started talking about our class and about the challenges of homework, homework for college classes, and how non-learning this time was doing homework. Well, I'm not going to share my position with you right now about homework, but instead I'll let you guess what it really is after I share my learning moments during this podcast and this one that I've simply entitled Homework Forever. Yeah, you heard it right. The title for this podcast is Homework Forever. So to begin this special episode, let me back up and explain that sometime during every one of my American government and politics classes, at least one student would write a position paper about the value, or in their case, the very limited value that homework has regarding to learning and important topics, and even getting a good grade. And as you can guess, there was unanimous support most often for any student's fun position on this topic. But there I was, and I had to put on my instructor hat tightly and offer a variety of opposing views on their wishful thinking. So given this background, given this information, I want to begin this homework forever podcast message by having everyone consider the multiple homework opportunities and values that first relate to work and jobs. Start out by thinking about accountability in relation to going the extra mile and doing a little what I would call homework for the job. Regarding maybe a unique work challenge issue, think of it, going the extra mile. What kind of homework would improve your status at your workplace and maybe even set you up for a pay increase? Just doing a little homework and being creative. Second, as you consider advancing in your current job or maybe reaching out to see what other positions may be out there for you, wouldn't it be worth doing just a little extra homework? Because if you choose to do a job advancement, homework is just a natural self-improvement activity. And the benefits are almost right there in front of you. The more you know and understand about your current employer and jobs will help if and when you internally apply for a different position. It makes a lot of sense. Likewise, everyone should know that when it comes to applying for a new job at a new company or with a new organization, that it is critical that you do some homework about them long before you even think about getting an interview. Okay? It's just common sense to do homework as you think about applying for another job. Finally, when you're thinking about innovation, specifically in creativity in the workplace, there is not a company anywhere out there that doesn't appreciate someone doing that extra homework on how to improve productivity or build a new customer opportunity. That form of homework via personal initiative, you can guess, has endless positive outcomes. Got it? So that's homework in your future related to work. Now enough about jobs. Let's talk about homework. Yes, I said home homework. Do I have you really thinking yet? If you want a clean, comfortable house, do you have to spend a little extra time doing home homework? Go ahead and call them chores or whatever. But for your entire life, you will have to think and do home homework. It's just in growing up. Think about having a good relationship with family and next door neighbors. We can call it networking, but we really need to do regular quality homework in this area to keep a solid network with all of those people all the time. And yes, it is networking, but it is also doing your homework to make sure you have a good, sound relationship with everybody around you. Another important issue that is critical, home homework, is to develop and nurture a great family feeling each and every day with those around you. Okay, go ahead and call it just good communication, but unless you practice complete home homework in the family feeling area, unplanned challenges could and will crop up. Finally, consider home homework in the area of home improvements and updates. Are you going to be okay with waiting for someone else to recommend taking action on a leaky faucet or adding on a new garage? Or do you take your own home homework process and that consider an assignment and get the action started on your own? Home homework really becomes everybody's job too. Well, do you think you know my position on homework yet? It is a lifetime, continuous improvement, personal growth activity. And whether it's at home or at work, the purpose and the responsibilities for doing homework stay the same. This podcast, Homework Forever, deserves a double listen.
