The Messiah: Wonderful Counselor

Scripture: Isaiah 9:6 (NASB) “And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor…”

Welcome back to our Advent reflections. Today we look at the first of the Messiah’s royal titles: Wonderful Counselor. This name tells us not only what Jesus does—but also who He is. “Counselor” speaks of wisdom, guidance, direction—someone who sees clearly, understands deeply, and leads faithfully. But Isaiah adds something more: He is not just a Counselor—He is a Wonderful Counselor. The Hebrew word for “wonderful” carries the idea of something supernatural, beyond human explanation—wisdom that comes from God Himself.

Jesus doesn’t simply give advice; He gives perfect truth. He doesn’t merely offer opinions; He reveals God’s heart. And He counsels us with tenderness. Psalm 32:8 says, “I will instruct you and teach you… I will counsel you with My eye upon you.” This is the Messiah’s character: He sees us. He knows us. He guides us.

Some of us today are carrying decisions, uncertainties, and questions we don’t even know how to put into words. We say, “Lord, I don’t know what to do.” And Advent whispers back, “Your Counselor has come.” Jesus guides us through His Word, through His Spirit, through His peace, and through His presence. He never rushes us. He never abandons us. He never misleads us.

Wonderful Counselor, guide our thoughts, our decisions, and our steps today. Quiet our anxious minds and help us hear Your gentle voice. Lead us in the way everlasting. Amen.
