The Messiah: The Bread of Life
Scripture: John 6:35 (NASB)
“I am the bread of life…”
So on Day 12, we turn our attention to one of Jesus’s most tender and sustaining descriptors. He says, “I am the Bread of Life.” What an invitation! In a world where we often run on empty, Jesus reminds us that He alone is our true nourishment—the One who fills us at the deepest level of our being.
Throughout Scripture, bread symbolizes sustenance, strength, and daily provision. It’s the most basic of foods—the kind that keeps a person going when everything else runs out. So when Jesus says, “I am the Bread of Life,” He isn’t offering us a snack for the journey; He is offering Himself as the very source of life.
He, beloved, is the One who satisfies the hunger that hides beneath all our longings:
A hunger no achievement can quiet.
A hunger no human relationship can fully meet.
A hunger no possession or experience can ever reach.
We often try to fill this hunger in many different ways. But success cannot fill it. Relationships cannot fill it. Possessions cannot fill it. And even good things—when elevated too high—cannot fill it. Only Christ can.
And when we come to Him with open hands and thirsty hearts, we find what our souls were made for: fullness in Him. Not the temporary fullness of earthly things, but the deep, steady, soul-level satisfaction that only the Bread of Life can give.
He it is, beloved, who will sustain us when we feel depleted.
He it is who will nourish us when life feels thin.
And He will fill us with Himself so that we no longer have to live hungry.
Lord Jesus, feed our souls today.
Satisfy the deep longing in us with Your presence and Your Word.
Fill what is empty, strengthen what is weak, and remind us that only You can sustain us.
And to everyone who feels impoverished or undernourished today, feed them with Your life-giving Bread, that they may feel full and contented and fulfilled in You.
As always, we thank You, Lord Jesus.
Amen.
