The Messiah: The Anointed One

Scripture: Isaiah 61:1 (NASB)

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me…”

Day 12 of Advent leads us to one of the most meaningful titles of the Messiah: the Anointed One.

The word Messiah means the One chosen and empowered by God. Jesus did not come in His own strength—He came filled with the Spirit of God.

Through the prophet Isaiah, God promised that an Anointed One would come—sent to bring healing and freedom to a wounded world. When Jesus read these words in the synagogue, He said simply, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled.”

Jesus was anointed to proclaim good news to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to set captives free, and to comfort those who mourn. His anointing was not symbolic. Wherever Jesus went, freedom followed. Where He spoke, hearts were awakened. Where He touched, healing began.

Jesus is God’s chosen One, God’s empowered One, God’s sent One. And the same Spirit who rested upon Him continues to work today.

This is where it becomes personal—and hopeful. Jesus’ anointing means His work is enough for you. You do not need to earn God’s favor or prove your worth. You are welcomed in by grace. The Spirit who anointed Jesus now lives in those who belong to Him, reminding us that we are never alone. He meets us in our weakness, heals what is wounded, and gently restores what has been broken.

Or, to say it simply:

The Spirit anointed Jesus to save you.

The Spirit now lives in you to shape you.
