The Messiah: The Son of Man
Scripture: Daniel 7:13 (NASB)
“…One like a Son of Man was coming, and He came up to the Ancient of Days and was presented before Him.”
Today we reflect on one of the most intriguing and meaningful titles Jesus used for Himself: the Son of Man.
It is the title He chose most often—not one given to Him by others, but one He claimed intentionally.
The title Son of Man holds a beautiful tension. On the one hand, it speaks of Jesus’ full humanity. He entered our world completely—sharing our weakness, our limitations, our emotions, and our pain. He knew hunger and fatigue, sorrow and rejection. He wept, He was tempted, He suffered. As the Son of Man, Jesus truly understands what it means to be human.
But this title also carries profound authority and glory. In Daniel’s vision, the Son of Man comes with the clouds of heaven and is given dominion, glory, and an everlasting kingdom—one that will never pass away. This is not a powerless figure, but a victorious King, entrusted with rule by God Himself.
In Jesus, these two realities come together.
He is near, yet exalted.
Compassionate, yet sovereign.
Gentle with the broken, yet reigning over all creation.
The Son of Man understands you completely. There is no struggle you carry that He does not recognize, no weakness He has not entered into. And at the same time, the Son of Man has authority over every power that threatens you—over sin, over fear, over death itself.
This is the comfort of Advent. The One who rules all things also walks with us through every moment of our lives. He is not distant from our pain, nor is He overwhelmed by it. He is present, powerful, and faithful.
