Dr. Charmaine Williams is a Professor at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto. She is also Vice-Dean, Students, School of Graduate Studies. Her research bridges practice and access and equity issues that affect various populations including racial minority women, LGBTQ individuals in local and international contexts, and individuals and families affected by serious and persistent mental illnesses. The majority of her practice experience has been in the mental health care system where she worked in inpatient and outpatient services and professional development and training.
On this episode we talk about how stigma works to remove hope and possibility from people living with a mental health diagnosis, the importance of looking at how stigma is embedded in structures, and the role of social workers in challenging stigma.
