It's in First John, chapter five, verse 14 and verse 15. And it's one of my favorite passages. 00:00:24.350 --> 00:00:44.799 This is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything, according to his will, he heareth us. And if we know that he hear us whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desire of him. 00:00:44.884 --> 00:01:20.733 If you want the ideal answer to prayer, then this is your prayer. Because it has every ingredient that is needed, that we can pray and all of us can use that as our prayer. Before I get into that this morning, I just want to share with you just several things that you should know about prayer. The first is the fact that in the Scripture, my understanding is there's somewhere around 650 prayers that are listed in the Bible. 00:01:20.817 --> 00:01:25.698 You got to understand I'm holding right now a translation. 00:01:25.783 --> 00:02:34.032 Some believe it to be the best translation others like others, but you got to understand we speak English, the Bible wasn't written in English, okay? And so, no use trying to bring in a Greek New Testament or a Hebrew Old Testament, most of you would not be very familiar with it. So we have translators who have translated and from translation to translation, it isn't always exactly the same. But I believe there'd be enough truth in the Word of God even translated to get the curse words out of your mouth, and the evil thoughts out of your mind, and to turn your life around. 650, at least, prayers listed in the Bible. The Bible refers to this word prayer in 61 of the 66 books, prayer must be important. There are approximately 450 recorded answers to prayer in Scripture. 00:02:28.645 --> 00:02:54.818 Something else you might want to know the first time prayer is mentioned in the Bible is Genesis chapter four. Verse 26, then began men to call upon the name of the Lord, then began men to call upon the name of the Lord, what prayer is all about. 00:02:49.431 --> 00:02:59.699 It's calling out the name of God and calling to him. It's communicating with God Almighty. 00:02:59.782 --> 00:03:15.014 The Bible records Jesus praying at least 25 different times during His earthly ministry. We know many more times than that, but this is what was recorded. 00:03:10.217 --> 00:03:55.576 In the Bible Paul mentions prayer, whether it's prayers, prayer reports, prayer requests, exhortations to pray, he mentions it 41 times. We can be in different positions when we pray, I suppose many, but the Bible lists at least five one is sitting, one is standing, one is lying, another is kneeling, and another is with our hands lifted up. Now when Jesus modeled prayer for his disciples, and how they should pray, is found in Luke chapter 11. And he provides five areas of focus. 00:03:51.116 --> 00:04:10.808 Five areas of focus. He mentions, first of all, the prestige of that name, Father, hallowed be thy name. He deals with a pattern for eternity Thy kingdom come, thy will be done. 00:04:05.927 --> 00:04:35.213 Talks about the provisions given. Give us this day our daily bread. Talks about the pardon of our pasts. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. It deals with a perpetual deliverance, deliver us from evil. And the ninth thing, the Bible lists at least nine main types of prayer. 00:04:35.298 --> 00:04:45.312 There's the prayer of faith listed in James. The prayer of agreement in Acts chapter two. 00:04:40.262 --> 00:04:55.074 And I have told you this last month that we worship better together, we pray better together. And there is a prayer of agreement coming together. 00:04:55.158 --> 00:06:03.995 There's a prayer request in Philippians. The prayer of thanksgiving over there in Psalms and the prayer of worship in Acts. The prayer of intercession that Timothy received a letter from Paul about. The prayer of imprecations in Psalm 69. And then praying it says in the spirit, First Corinthians 14, praying in the Spirit. Somebody said that God's phone number is Jeremiah 33:3, Call unto me and I will answer these show you great and mighty things. I think, to me, one of the great invitations to prayer is Luke chapter 11. Jesus illustrates tells a great story. And then he says, Ask, it's verse nine, and it shall be given you, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you, for everyone that asked him to receive it, he that seeketh, find it enter them that knocketh it shall be opened unto them. 00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:24.024 Ask, seek, and knock. But to me, the ideal prayer of the Bible, is first John chapter five, beginning in verse 14 and then 15. It's the ideal prayer of the New Testament. Why? Three reasons. First of all, it contains the grandest scope. 00:06:24.108 --> 00:06:55.666 Ask anything, ask anything. You got any needs in your life, you can talk to God about it. Other situations that are out of control, talk to God about it, he said, Ask Anything. Think of all the prayers in the heaven in the storeroom of God, that have never been granted because nobody came and asked. He said, You have not because ye ask not. 00:06:50.197 --> 00:07:50.619 Wouldn't it be an awful thing to get to heaven and find your neighbor could have been saved if we'd have got a burden, and had prayed for them and we didn't? Think of all the prayers. The story is told about a king in the yester times in another place, setting on His Majesty's throne, guarded by the Royal Guards. And suddenly a beggar rushes past the guards and falls at the feet of the king. And immediately those guards go into action, jerk their swords, and they're about to slaughter him for coming in unannounced. And the king says to the guards hold it for a moment. Any man that risk his life, I want to know why he would do so. Without looking up. 00:07:45.569 --> 00:08:41.784 The beggar said, Sir, I'm a baker by trade, and I can't find work. My children are literally starving to death. And since I have nothing and you have everything, I thought, if I could get an audience with you, that you would show mercy and feed my family. And they said, let's throw him out. And the king said, No, he has treated me as a king. I shall be a king unto him, send him to the store room, anything he asked. And I'm thinking this morning if we would treat God as God. I believe that God would love to be God unto us. The grander scope, just ask anything. What are you talking about? Preacher? 00:08:36.399 --> 00:09:44.480 I'm saying pray, people pray. I mean, Elijah prayed for rain, and God gave him rain. Abraham prayed for Saddam, and for his nephew and his family down there. And God delivered Lots family. It tells me it's all right to pray for our family and our friends and our associates in life. We can pray for them. I thought about Joshua, he was fighting a battle and it was getting dark. And he said, God, would you make the sun dispense still there and Joshua with chapter 10. And those who study the chronological things of time, tell us there's a half day missing in the history of the annals of understanding of time, and it goes all the way back to Joshua chapter 10. Can you imagine a man simply saying God make the sun to stand still? But if you read here, it said Ask Anything. 00:09:45.799 --> 00:09:49.669 Ask Anything. I follow the early church how they had prayed. 00:09:49.820 --> 00:11:39.110 Their pastor was Simon Peter, he is in jail, and they went to prayer in this little house. And as they prayed God, rent that prison and delivered Simon Peter out of jail and he came to the home and knocked on the door when they open the door there he stood and he scared them. They thought it can't be him and they close the door. God answered prayer, they couldn't believe it when it happened. Reminds me of the tavern that opened up in a town and the church, they got together begin to pray against it. They said, We're gonna pray and fast and ask God to burn that tavern down. About two weeks later, a storm came lightning flashed and lightning struck the tavern and burned it to the ground. While the bar keeper, he took the church to court. He said they burned my bar down. He said they went to prayer, and they prayed that God would burn my bar and they burned my bar down. And the Church Fathers said, no, no, no, we didn't have anything to do with it. And the judge said, Well, apparently the barkeeper believes in prayer being answered, and apparently the church doesn't. Zoom, there it went again. I thought of the little woman, her prayer was silent. She pressed her way through the crowd and touch the hem of His garment. What about the demon afflicted son, his desperate dad brought him to the disciples, they couldn't deliver him and he brought him to Jesus to be prayed over. There was a public that his prayer was, Lord, have mercy on me a sinner. Blind Bartimaeus, Jesus said, What would you have to do? 00:11:39.679 --> 00:12:05.149 You need a fresh paint job on your blind man stick? Need a brand new cup to bag with? What would you have me to do? And his answer that I might see. My question to you is what do you need God to do in your life? In your home? In your future? Have you asked him for it? For, He said Ask Anything. Ask Anything. 00:12:05.990 --> 00:12:32.629 The grander scope now look at the purest motive, according to His will. Are you saying pastor, that's a limitation? That's a restriction? No. It's simply a guideline. It needs to be within the Divine Will of God. I never want to pray outside of the will of God for my life. I think that we need to stay in our lane. 00:12:33.139 --> 00:13:19.610 James, chapter four, verse three warns you ask and you receive not because you ask amiss. There are things that we can ask wrongly for. Things that is not within the peripheral will of God. Things that you don't know about that maybe in that prayer, it cannot be answered and I'll give you an illustration. I was about 19 or 20 and I was called to come and be the song evangelist in a revival in little called town called Andersonville, Indiana. The evangelists was a very famed big named, one of the biggest names in evangelism at that time. 00:13:20.330 --> 00:13:36.830 Great preacher. And I drove back and forth. My parents lived in the Indianapolis area. And so I drove and they said now, Saturday night, why don't you stay overnight with us in the parsonage and you won't have to get up so early. And so I did. 00:13:37.370 --> 00:14:29.450 And somewhere in the night, I left my bedroom to go downstairs to the bathroom. And at the bottom of the stairs, lay the evangelist lying on his face groaning and praying and sobbing and begging God to answer prayer. I had to step over him to get to the restroom. When I came back, I had to step over him again. And I just felt like my skin crawl. I had never encountered anything like that in the desperation of his praying. I found out later that his brother, he had a half brother that disappeared and nobody knew where he went. He was in insurance and they thought that somehow in his business dealings, somebody had gotten crossed, and maybe they kidnapped him they didn't know. 00:14:24.409 --> 00:14:55.580 So the evangelist and his mother made a covenant together to spend all night Saturday's praying that that boy, that guy would come back home. And over the next few years, every Saturday when he needed his sleep, he was praying Oh God, bring my brother home God find my brother. God reached out to my brother. His health broke. 00:14:56.360 --> 00:15:15.649 You can't miss Saturday night sleep and get up the next morning and preach several services. His health broke, something snapped and he committed suicide. In my study, I ran across the church where they had to clean up the mess. 00:15:15.649 --> 00:16:33.049 And he was reading a book right before he took his life and he had underlined something in it, and I have that book. His nerves broke. I came through that part of the country a little later, after he had died, happened to stop to get some coffee. And I picked up a newspaper and I was intrigued by an article that I begin to read, man was out fishing in a field in a pond and hooked into a big fish and began to try to reel it in and he drug it in. And when he got it above the surface, it was a shoe with a foot skeletal remains. He immediately called the sheriff's office, and they came in with metal detectors saw the outline of a car beneath the water. And they pulled it out and when they did sitting at the steering wheel with the skeleton hands still holding the steering wheel, was the remains of an individual. They found a billfold on the car floor and from it extracted some credit cards. And it was the name of the brother of this evangelist. 00:16:28.370 --> 00:16:42.889 He was praying those years Saturday night, staying awake all night long for God to do something impossible to do. 00:16:36.440 --> 00:18:08.960 Bring him home. And his nerves broke. And he said, you ask and you ask a miss. Therefore I always tack on to my prayers if it'd be your will. I'll pray about something and I will always say God, if it be your Will I never want to pray outside of the will of God. I'm talking about the purest motive, according to your will. Now what is God's will? Well, we could talk about a lot of things the Bible talks about when it comes to our smarts some of us don't have a whole lot. But the scripture says if any man lack wisdom, let him ask him and that gives us the all and upbraideth not. God will never make fun of you for coming to him to ask for some wisdom so you make smart decisions. I think in the will of God is salvation. God willeth that none should perish, but that all should come to repentance. I think according to First Thessalonians chapter four, verse three, that there is something called sanctification that's in the will of God for all of us. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that you should abstain from fornication. God is saying there is an experience that can keep you from the greatest temptations that will hit you because we'll always live in a world of temptations. 00:18:04.549 --> 00:18:30.140 And you better have enough of God in your life, so surrendered to God that God has set you apart and helps you to live a holy life in spite of all that you're hit with. I think that I could rightly say that supplications are praying the prayers for others is within the scheme of God's divine will. 00:18:26.029 --> 00:18:30.140 Never wrong to pray for others. 00:18:32.269 --> 00:19:08.269 Fact of the matter over there in James, chapter five, verse 16, Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another that you may be healed. Samuel mentions it in his book. And it's in that particular chapter where he makes this kind of a remark. He says Moreover, as for me chapter 12, verse 23, God forbid that I should sin against thee, or against the Lord rather sinned against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you. 00:19:11.390 --> 00:20:03.410 Can you imagine it's not only what you do that can be a sin, sometimes it's not doing what we should do. And one of those is ceasing to pray for us. What if God begins to lay a burden on your heart for your unsaved children? Don't you think you ought to pray for them? Don't you know the devil wants you to get your mind off of all of that just get involved in life and never raise a prayer to God for God to surround them with protection for God to turn on the lights to bring people into their life to help bring conviction? It might be that God awakens you some night and in the darkness begins to burden your heart, maybe for your pastor, for the staff, or for the church. And if you don't, maybe all hell's going to break loose in one of our lives. 00:19:57.589 --> 00:20:43.160 Nobody prayed for us. We can sin against the Lord in not praying for one another and ceasing to pray. But then the third reason why I believe this to be the ideal prayer, you have the grandest scoop ask anything, the purest motive according to His will. And then you have the surest faith and reads he heareth us. The surest faith, without any question, God hears God hears. What's the definition of faith it's found over Hebrews chapter 11, verse one, you want me to quote it? Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word. 00:20:45.500 --> 00:20:56.240 But in that 11th Chapter, verse one, it says, Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 00:20:57.349 --> 00:21:09.890 Now left out one word in that definition. I left off the first word. Now faith, is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 00:21:05.839 --> 00:21:25.970 Now faith, that little word now happens to be a tense word, it gives a certain tense, it has to do with present tense. I'm glad for past tense and future tense, but I live right now. I need God right here and in the now, not in the hereafter, I need him. 00:21:23.059 --> 00:22:05.420 And that's why I'm going after him here. I need you right now, Lord, now. It's now faith. This story is found there in John chapter 11. Jesus had some friends, a brother and two sisters, and they were his dear friends Lazarus and his sister, Martha and his other sister, Mary. And Lazarus got sick, and he died. And they sent word to Jesus, about the funeral service. And the day past, and it didn't go and the disciples asked him about it. Two days passed, and three days pass. And Jesus said, Well, he's asleep, and we need to go awakened him. 00:22:01.490 --> 00:22:19.730 They thought maybe he had taken a snooze. No, wasn't that he had died. And for the glory of God, he was going to be raised literally from the dead. Let me read a bit of the story to you. 00:22:14.869 --> 00:22:25.039 And it's found here in this 11th chapter of John, verse 20. Jesus finally shows up four days late. 00:22:25.490 --> 00:22:56.900 The Jews said, death has to be proved by being dead for four days. Jesus shows up four days late. And when she heard Jesus was coming, she went and met him verse 21, and listen to what she said, and she was just a little curt with it. Jesus, if thou has been here, my brother had not died now that she had faith in Jesus. Yes. She had faith in the past. If you'd have been here like you should have been my brother wouldn't have died. 00:22:57.529 --> 00:23:21.980 Doesn't help Lazarus though, does it? He's still dead. It's past tense faith. So Jesus speaks to her. And he says in verse 23, He said to her thy brother shall rise again. And verse 24, she answered, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. 00:23:16.369 --> 00:23:21.980 She had faith in the future. 00:23:24.410 --> 00:24:46.730 Future tense faith, whenever the resurrection takes place, my brother will rise again as well as everybody else. And Jesus stopped her for a moment. And he said, I'm the resurrection, verse 25, and the life he that believeth in me, though we were dead, yet, shall he live. Now that's present tense faith. And Jesus asked bleievest thou this, believest thou this. I cannot tell you the times through the years as an evangelist, especially. And even as a pastor, somebody coming to the altar, and it just seemed like they could not believe for salvation. And I've had people gather around them and said, Don't you believe that God can save you? Well, he's done it for others. Well, that's past tense, but that don't help you. Well, don't you think he'll do it for you? Well, I know he said he would. So the I know he's gone through some time. That didn't help me right now. And somebody will speak up and say, but when is he going to save you? What'd do you mean when? When's he going to do it? You keep putting it off in the future. You admit in the past, you've seen it with others. You say he will, but when. And suddenly the light breaks through in their faith takes hold, they believe Him to save them right in the here and the now. It's called present tense faith, now faith. But that's not the end of the story. 00:24:42.380 --> 00:25:45.950 Verse 38, Jesus therefore again, groaning in himself, comes to the grave. It was a cave and a stone lay upon it. It said verse 39, Jesus said, Take away the stone. And you know something you don't ever believe God for a miracle in your life as long as there's a stone of doubt messing with your psychic. As long as you've got just full of question marks, God's got to get a period behind your name and you got to believe God by faith now. And Martha, the sister of him, that was dead, say that to him, Lord, by this time, he stanketh, where he has been dead four days. And in verse 40, Jesus say that to her said, I not under thee, that if thou wouldst believe thou shalt see the glory of God. Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus looked it up his eyes and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 00:25:47.809 --> 00:25:53.059 The surest faith, he heareth us. 00:25:47.809 --> 00:26:21.259 Remember that? And in verse 42, he said, and I knew that thou hears me always. The secret to prayer is knowing that God hears you if there's not a sound going on in the room. If you don't hear the sound of or the click of a receiver on the other end, be confident in one thing He heareth us. And that's what Jesus said, there. I thank you, that you, you've heard me, and I knew that thou hears me, always. 00:26:21.680 --> 00:26:38.900 And so on verse 43, Lazarus, come forth. Loose him and let him go. Present tense faith brings God into the here and the now. Whatever your situation, you can bring God right into your home at that moment, and God can begin to change things. 00:26:38.900 --> 00:27:51.170 Now, interesting to me is First Corinthians 13, where it tells us when I was a child, I spake as a child, I acted like a child, but when I became a man, I put away childish things he grew up, okay. And yet, when you go over to Matthew, chapter 18, it says, unless we become as little children, we shall not see the kingdom of heaven. He said that we need to become as little children. What is there about little children, that he's implying? He's implying their childlike obedience, their childlike faith. You're up high, and something's about to happen and daddy looks up and he puts his hands out and says, jump, Daddy will catch you. And that child trusts daddy to do what he said he would do. And our Heavenly Father is saying, I want you in childlike faith to trust me and jump by faith into my arms. For he said, This is our confidence. You can believe, you can trust, you can rely on. 00:27:46.940 --> 00:28:25.819 And it's our assurance, the knowing the believing the trusting. For verse 15, If we know that he hear us, what so ever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we ask of him. Three questions. Number one, do you have a prayer? Do you have a prayer? Have you put your prayer together? Have you sent your prayer up? Do you have a prayer? I say again, if God, one day will pull back the curtains and let us look into the room of revisions, and said I could have granted all of this to you. But you never asked me. 00:28:26.569 --> 00:29:15.170 Do you have a prayer? And secondly, do you have a prayer place, a place where you meet with God, and God can count on you being there and you get to your place. I don't care it's going down the highway on your way to work and you got a long drive. It's a time of prayer. A place of prayer. Suzanne Wesley, the mother of John and Charles Wesley. Her and her husband had 18 children. She didn't get much privacy. But when she wanted to pray with the kids all surrounding her in the house, she would take her apron and pull it over her head. And she made that her place of prayer. 00:29:09.289 --> 00:29:57.200 No excuse for any of us not having a place of prayer. And my third question to you is do you have a plan in prayer? Some plan that you live by a plan that you believe in? I don't know about you, but mine has been first Chronicles chapter four, verse 10. And it's the prayer of Jabez, and I prayed this over and over, and over. Jabez asked for four things. He said, first of all, bless me indeed. That's my prayer. God, I don't want a curse. I want your favor. I'm asking your favor in my life. 00:29:52.940 --> 00:30:07.579 I'm asking your blessings in my life, not your curse pulling me but blessings. And a second thing he said, enlarge my coast. 00:30:02.539 --> 00:30:12.349 In other words, I've said, God make it bigger than my dream. 00:30:07.579 --> 00:30:40.700 Take my dreams beyond my dreams and make them your dreams, dream big through me. And my third is keep your hand on me. I never want God to take his hand off of my life. I've seen other people with the hand of God no longer on their life, and I want the hand of protection. I want that hand of anointing. I want that hand of guidance through life. I want the warmth of God's hand. 00:30:36.349 --> 00:30:40.700 Then he said, keep me from evil. 00:30:42.410 --> 00:31:20.720 There's temptations all around, there's evil all around and some are going after this evil and some are going after that and it's pulling them down and they thought they were okay. And they weren't okay. Balaam was a Gentile prophet. Back in the book of Numbers, you'll read his story. If you look at all the catalogue of successes that he had had in his prophecies, they were many. But he had a weakness. He liked to be rewarded. Things were kind of about money matters. And somebody bribed him and paid him off to go curse God's people. 00:31:22.250 --> 00:31:40.730 But he had a prayer that he prayed and it's listed here in Numbers 23, verse 10, let me die the death of the righteous, let my last in be like his. But you know something, you can't live wrong and die, right. And when it comes down to his final days, 00:31:40.730 --> 00:32:00.799 22, recording his death, he also was killed by the sword and died on the wrong side. He died with the enemy, not with the righteous. And I'm saying God, I want you to keep your hand up all my life and I want you to keep me from evil. 00:32:02.150 --> 00:32:19.309 This is the confidence that we have in him that we ask anything according to His will, he heareth us. Cale Crocker was a Free Methodist Evangelist, in his early days he pastored. 00:32:20.359 --> 00:34:26.150 Meant him only one time in my life. He was pastoring in upstate New York in a small town and parsonage was on the outskirts of the town. The street out front was in a bad state of repair and potholes and no way to dodge them all and those trucks would come in and wee hours of the morning and hit those potholes and splatter mud up on the front of the parsonage porch. And he'd awakened and was hard to get a good night's sleep. And he told his wife, I think the city fathers don't care much for the preachers around here. I've asked him to fix the potholes they've done nothing about it. And he said I got up one morning in a terrible frame of mind and got my top coat and headed up to the City Hall to talk with the city fathers. He's about to leave the house his wife said I don't think you ought to talk to them like the way you feel it'll leave a bad impression. He said I'm tired of those potholes. And his little boy spoke up and said, Daddy, I can't remember since I've had an orange. Daddy, when you go uptown, would you stop by the little town market and buy me in orange, it cost about a dime, as I recall him telling me. And he looked at his boy, He said, Son, I don't have time to fool with you and your orange and I don't have any dimes to spend on oranges. When he said Dad I don't have anybody else to ask but you said you can ask God. He said, Daddy, would you ask God to give me some oranges? No. He said you asked God yourself. The boy looked kind of hurt. And he looked up and he said, Well, daddy, I'll ask God not just for an orange but a bunch of oranges. Said I headed uptown, said I was going to clean house on the city fathers. Let them know just how I felt. And he said the further I went the worse I felt the way I treated my wife and how I'd cut my boy off when he asked for an orange. And I'm his daddy. 00:34:27.769 --> 00:35:19.699 Instead of telling him I'd pray I told him to pray for his own oranges. What if he prays and doesn't get any? He'll lose faith. He said by the time I walked into the town hall. And he said some of the leaders met me. He said I didn't jump on them like I planned. He said I simply mentioned by the way, there's some potholes out in front of my house, when you get around to it could you fill them up? Isn't it amazing how sometimes God takes the potholes of life and makes a blessing out of them? He said I got home and as I came up the street he said I looked in my boy was out on the front porch and he said he had a whole line of oranges on the porch railing. And he was eating on an orange that he had just peeled and he said, I hurried across the yard and said, Where did you get them? He said, I asked Jesus for them, Daddy, like you said to do. 00:35:21.139 --> 00:36:33.559 Instead of praying for an orange, I just told him I wanted a bunch of oranges. And he said, Where did you get them? He said, Daddy, see that crate? Said it was in the front yard burst open. He said, oranges scattered all over the front yard. God got me some oranges like I asked him to. He said, Son, don't you eat another bite? I'm gonna have to pay for these things. Somebody hit one of those potholes it jarred a crate off the back of the truck. He had to turn around, walk back into town to the little market. And sure enough, there's a truck and he's unloading these crates of oranges.
