The ABCs of being a positive warrior today, the letter F
Do you let feel drive what you do or do you let what you do drive how you feel?
People get caught up in thinking that they have to feel a certain way to take the action. You don't. You have to take the action and then the feeling follows.
One of the key things with motivation and where many get it wrong is believing motivation comes after movement begins. Get this. Highlight it, circle it, underline it and tattoo it on your forehead, motivation will come after movement begins. Just get started. You’ll find that once you’re in motion, you’ll likely want to stay in motion.
Act differently than how you feel. Follow your ABC’s. Those being, Act Big, Breathe Big, Commit Big.
Every athlete and every elite mind in any lane wants two things. They want to show up consistently and they want to show up with confidence. People will often seek me out wanting to feel these things and I’ll inform them I can't help you to feel more confident but I can help you to act more confident and acting confident is going to change how you feel. Confidence is something you do. How certain are you that you’re treating confidence as a verb? As an action piece?
It's the start that stops most people and we just have to make sure that we do whatever it takes to get started. How I feel doesn't actually impact how I perform. How I behave impacts my performance. I've written a bestseller. I didn't always feel like writing. I just wrote. My Podcast was ranked one of the top 15 positive leadership podcasts in the world. I don't always feel like recording, I just record. I’ve spoken on a TEDx stage. I didn’t always feel like scripting and rehearsing. I just did it. And what I find is once I get started, I actually feel like doing it and I enjoy it but I don’t always enjoy it before I start. It's always I gotta use energy to start and to get going.
This has actually been proven in a lab at Harvard by Professor Amy Cuddy. She's got a TED Talk that's been seen by roughly 25 million people centered around the science and power of body language. How you project yourself and how you carry yourself is going to influence your levels of testosterone, what we want in cortisol, the stress hormone, simply based on how you carry yourself with body language. Act Big. Acting differently than how you feel is a gamechanger. Breath Big………..it’s food for your soul. Commit Big and not just commit but recommit to the commitments that you set. The morning routine is so important that you have good behavior design, from the get go. It’s part of the reason why I set my clothes out the night before. Why I set out my towel out the night before. My workout gear the night before. My shoes are in a direct path to where I’m going next. My keys are on the key hanger next to the door. Etc. I get up with this behavior design and the intention to say I'm not going to let my feelings drive the bus around here because my feel is not real. I'm going to let my behavior drive the bus.
Choose focus over feel.
The power isn’t simply in knowing. The power for you today is in the decision.
Feel will break some, while others will break records.
- Walt Disney was fired for having no imagination
- Thomas Edison conducted 1000 failed experiments. The light bulb was 1001
- Michael Jordan missed around 15,000 shots
- Most of us have heard of WD-40. Found in the garage, used to make things stop squeaking, work better. The WD stands for “water displacement”. Do you know what the 40 stands for? It was their 40th formula. They experimented with 39 different combinations before striking gold with the successful one.
When was the last time you attempted something even ten times and called it good because of how you felt? How about five times? Two times? You still loved this, you still had a chance to be great at this, but you stopped simply because of the way you felt?
We know great things take time, yet we feel defeated and we let feel drive us. You HAVE to get your reps in and with each rep, if driven by the behavior bus, the focus bus, the intentionality bus, we will bridge the gap between who we are and who we were called to be.
Today, don’t let feel drive what you do. Let what you do drive how you feel.
