Is Medicare Plan G Worth The Cost?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The right question is not simply how much Plan G costs. It is what you receive in exchange for that monthly premium.
Medicare Supplement Plan G is often described as one of the most comprehensive Medicare coverage options available.
That description is accurate. It is also only half the story.
Plan G covers nearly all the out-of-pocket costs left behind by Original Medicare. For people who want predictable healthcare expenses and the freedom to see Medicare-accepting providers nationwide, that can be extremely valuable.
Hello, and thanks for joining us on the podcast with Elite Insurance Partners. Imagine sitting down at uh this fancy restaurant, you order a massive meal, and then you realize the menu has absolutely no prices on it.
SPEAKER_01That is a terrifying feeling.
SPEAKER_00Right. And that anxiety is kind of what relying solely on original Medicare can feel like. So today, for this deep dive, we are exploring a stack of insurance briefings, some historical rate data, and recent Medicare research.
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell Yeah. And the mission here is really to figure out if Medicare Plan G, with its higher monthly premium, is actually worth the cost for your retirement.
SPEAKER_00Aaron Powell Because I mean that's one of the most critical questions you face when turning 65.
SPEAKER_01Oh, absolutely. Plan G is, well, it's often labeled the most comprehensive coverage option out there, but that level of comfort definitely has a price tag.
SPEAKER_00So let's unpack those costs. Original Medicare, it covers a ton, but it leaves this open-ended gap.
SPEAKER_01Usually you're paying 20% for most part B services.
SPEAKER_00And the really scary part is there is no annual out-of-pocket maximum to cap that.
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell Exactly. So that 20% you know, it it sounds manageable for just a standard doctor's visit, but it becomes financially devastating if you suddenly need surgery or, say, cancer treatments.
SPEAKER_00Aaron Powell or just frequent specialist care. Trevor Burrus, Jr.
SPEAKER_01Right. And this is where Plan G steps in. It's a type of Medicare supplement or Medigap plan.
SPEAKER_00Aaron Powell It literally bridges the gap.
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell Exactly. It covers nearly all of those unpredictable out-of-pocket costs like your Part A hospital deductibles and coinsurance.
SPEAKER_00Aaron Powell But uh I want to be really clear about the cat share because it does not cover everything.
SPEAKER_01No, it doesn't.
SPEAKER_00You are still on the hook for the annual Part B deductible, which is $283 in 2026. Plus, you need completely separate plans for prescription drugs.
SPEAKER_01It's part D.
SPEAKER_00Right, Part D. Along with vision and dental. So you're basically building a package.
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell You really are, and you have to factor all those separate premiums into your overall retirement budget if you want total coverage.
SPEAKER_00It kind of reminds me of booking one of those all-inclusive resorts.
SPEAKER_01Oh, how so?
SPEAKER_00Well, once you get to the island, your expensive meals and drinks are totally covered, but you still have to buy your own plane ticket just to get there.
SPEAKER_01That makes perfect sense.
SPEAKER_00And that ticket is your part B deductible and drug coverage. You aren't buying the resort package because you plan to eat $1,000 in food. You're buying it for the peace of mind.
SPEAKER_01That is the core trade-off right there. You're exchanging the anxiety of potential medical bankruptcy for a very predictable, steady monthly premium.
SPEAKER_00And since calculating those combined costs can get overwhelming really fast, just a soft reminder that we at Elite Insurance Partners can help you select a plan that actually fits your budget.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00You can just fill out the form on the page this audio is on, or give us a call at 877-324-1512, and we will answer any questions you have.
SPEAKER_01It really helps to have someone walk you through it. Because what's fascinating is how that financial predictability actually translates to lifestyle freedom.
SPEAKER_00Oh, right, because plan G is a medigap plan.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. So it doesn't operate with a traditional localized provider network like an HMO would.
SPEAKER_00Meaning I'm not locked into like a specific county's list of doctors.
SPEAKER_01You are not.
SPEAKER_00So if I'm a snowbird spending winters in Florida and summers in New York, the coverage just travels with me.
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell Precisely. You can see any provider nationwide who accepts original Medicare.
SPEAKER_00Which is most of them, right?
SPEAKER_01Vast majority, yes. And there are no referrals needed to see a specialist, which is just a massive relief if you face a complex health issue while traveling.
SPEAKER_00Okay, but here is where I need to push back a little bit.
SPEAKER_01Sure, go for it.
SPEAKER_00Because Medigap Plan G is federally standardized, right? A policy from company A has the exact same medical benefits as a policy from company B.
SPEAKER_01That is correct, yes.
SPEAKER_00So logically, shouldn't you just sort by price and buy the absolute cheapest one you can find?
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell It seems like the smart move I know, but going for the lowest starting premium is actually incredibly risky.
SPEAKER_00Wait, really? Why?
SPEAKER_01Well, here is how the industry sometimes works. A company might offer a dirt cheap introductory rate just to get you in the door.
SPEAKER_00Okay, sure.
SPEAKER_01But then as that specific group of policyholders ages and they start requiring more medical care, the company aggressively hikes the premiums to cover their losses.
SPEAKER_00Oh wow. So if your health declines while you're in that newly expensive plan, you could be effectively trapped paying those high rates.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. And that brings us to timing, which is everything. You only get one six-month med gap open enrollment period.
SPEAKER_00And that window starts the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B, right?
SPEAKER_01Yes. And during this time, you can secure a plan without any medical underwriting.
SPEAKER_00So they can't scrutinize your medical records or deny you or charge you more based on pre-existing conditions.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. It's a golden ticket.
SPEAKER_00But if you miss that window and try to switch later on because your so-called cheap plan hiked its rates, they absolutely can deny you.
SPEAKER_01They can, and they will.
SPEAKER_00That is a terrifying trap, which is exactly why navigating those historical rate increases shouldn't be a solo omission. Definitely not. So just a quick reminder: we can help you analyze those specific company histories if you just fill out the form on this page. Or call us at 877-324-1512.
SPEAKER_01Looking at the bigger picture, plan G gives you maximum predictability for a higher premium.
SPEAKER_00Aaron Powell But there are alternatives, right? If you want to balance the scales differently.
SPEAKER_01Oh, for sure. Like Medigap Plan N or a high deductible plan G, they offer lower monthly premiums, but they carry more variable out-of-pocket risks.
SPEAKER_00Like co-pays and things like that.
SPEAKER_01Right. Or you could look at Medicare Advantage, which packages things entirely differently, but comes with stricter network restrictions.
SPEAKER_00So it really just boils down to your personal comfort with financial risk versus your desire for flexibility.
SPEAKER_01Finding the coverage you can realistically maintain for the rest of your life.
SPEAKER_00Not just for year one. And as we wrap up this deep dive, just a final warm reminder that we at Elite Insurance Partners are ready to answer your questions and help you compare all these options.
SPEAKER_01We really are here to help.
SPEAKER_00Just give us a call at 877324-1512 or use the form. So here's a thought to leave you with.
SPEAKER_01Let's hear it.
SPEAKER_00We know our bodies, and obviously our healthcare needs, are guaranteed to change as we age. If that physical uncertainty is totally inevitable, is our personal tolerance for financial risk the only thing we actually have control over?
SPEAKER_01That is a great point.
SPEAKER_00Think about that the next time you consider booking your all inclusive retirement. Thanks for listening.
