if we all think deeply enough about that, we'll all think of things along the lines of we want a church that stands for the truth. 00:03:47.840 --> 00:03:54.719 A church that loves God, that doesn't scripture calls that a sound church. 00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:09.439 That is a healthy church. 00:04:09.919 --> 00:04:12.400 And it's something that we all want to be. 00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:23.680 Some of that's because of the natural cycle. 00:04:25.120 --> 00:04:29.279 Others are not here anymore because they've simply fallen from the Lord. 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:34.879 As you turn through your New Testament, you see hints of this in the various epistles. 00:04:35.199 --> 00:04:42.720 In Galatians chapter 1, there are your churches of Galatia, but Paul says, I am astounded that you are turning away so slow. 00:04:45.519 --> 00:04:50.000 But you have other churches that leave the Lord much more slowly. 00:04:51.120 --> 00:05:02.480 Churches that fundamentally looking in appear to be healthy because they stand for truth, because they worship God the way He's prescribed. 00:05:03.920 --> 00:05:08.639 But there's something missing underneath the facade of righteousness that we see. 00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:18.800 This morning I want us to think about the rise and fall of this church. 00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:25.439 In Revelation chapter 2, Jesus tells this church, remember from where you have fallen. 00:05:26.959 --> 00:05:28.560 They had left the roof. 00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:32.560 And I want us to consider this morning how that happened. 00:05:32.800 --> 00:05:38.560 Because like Ephesus, this congregation could be doctrinally right. 00:05:38.959 --> 00:05:52.800 We could take the right stance on issues, we could be morally strong, have lots of activity, which is obvious happens here, but we could still be separated from the Lord. 00:05:53.519 --> 00:05:54.879 How is that possible? 00:05:55.120 --> 00:05:56.639 Ephesus helps us see that. 00:05:56.800 --> 00:06:03.839 When we think about the church in Ephesus, we're thinking about uh a church that began in Acts chapter 19. 00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:11.519 Paul makes his first visit to Ephesus in Acts chapter 18, and we see no conversion explicitly mentioned. 00:06:11.839 --> 00:06:14.800 He reads it with the Jews and he moves on. 00:06:15.040 --> 00:06:17.439 But he comes back in Acts chapter 19. 00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:22.560 I want you to imagine for a moment that you were an individual living in Ephesus. 00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:29.439 The center of Ephesus stands this marvelous temple, the temple of Artemis. 00:06:30.639 --> 00:06:36.160 This great vast temple, this this prominent display of religiosity. 00:06:37.680 --> 00:06:41.120 But it's a community filled with moral compromise. 00:06:41.519 --> 00:06:44.639 Idolatry uh fueled the economy. 00:06:44.800 --> 00:06:49.360 That's how they made their money, building idols to serve this this idolatrous God. 00:06:52.720 --> 00:07:00.480 To become a Christian in a place like this meant that you were denying the very identity of the culture, of the economy, of the people around you. 00:07:09.279 --> 00:07:20.079 When we think about the beginning of this church, we see a church that grows not simply because of excitement, not simply because there were vast numbers that made this church strong. 00:07:20.720 --> 00:07:26.480 This is a church that grew and became strong because there were people there who valued the church. 00:07:26.800 --> 00:07:29.519 Consider the beginning of Acts chapter 19. 00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:36.560 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Epic. 00:07:37.360 --> 00:07:39.680 There he found some disciples. 00:07:39.839 --> 00:07:43.759 And he said to them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:47.759 And they said, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. 00:07:48.240 --> 00:07:50.959 And he said, Into what then were you baptized? 00:07:51.279 --> 00:07:53.439 They said, Into John's baptism. 00:07:53.680 --> 00:08:00.480 And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after them. 00:08:00.720 --> 00:08:02.079 That is Jesus. 00:08:02.800 --> 00:08:06.079 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 00:08:06.240 --> 00:08:11.680 If we pause and we hold our finger right here and we flip back to Acts chapter 18, you notice something. 00:08:11.759 --> 00:08:16.639 This this is the same pattern of Apollos, who was mentioned in 19 and verse 1. 00:08:16.879 --> 00:08:20.480 If you go back to Acts chapter 18, he had the same issue. 00:08:20.800 --> 00:08:26.240 But notice a few things about Apollos as we scroll scan through verse 24 through 28. 00:08:26.959 --> 00:08:42.240 This is a man in verse 24 who was described as eloquent, who was described as being competent in the scriptures, he was instructed in the way of the Lord, he was fervent in spirit, he spoke and he taught accurately. 00:08:43.679 --> 00:08:45.120 But there was an issue. 00:08:49.679 --> 00:08:53.840 A baptism that was insufficient to bring about salvation. 00:08:54.879 --> 00:09:03.360 And so Aquila and Priscilla go to him, and if the text says that they explained to him more accurately the way of God. 00:09:06.159 --> 00:09:09.360 That's the pattern we see of the brethren in Ephesus. 00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:14.720 They believed in God, they may have even had had an inclination of who Jesus is. 00:09:14.879 --> 00:09:16.480 That seems obvious. 00:09:16.799 --> 00:09:19.039 But they still needed salvation. 00:09:19.360 --> 00:09:23.039 When they were taught more fully, they desired to respond and they respond. 00:09:23.279 --> 00:09:26.159 There wasn't friction, there was immediate response. 00:09:26.480 --> 00:09:29.519 We're gonna go on in verse 8 of Acts chapter 19. 00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:36.159 We see that Paul entered the synagogue and for three months he spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God. 00:09:36.399 --> 00:09:47.759 But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with them, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus. 00:09:48.080 --> 00:09:56.559 This continued for two years, so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. 00:09:57.519 --> 00:10:00.399 Their response to the gospel motivated action. 00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:03.360 They continued with Paul reasoning through these things. 00:10:03.519 --> 00:10:07.440 They wanted to know the truth and they wanted others to know about it as well. 00:10:07.679 --> 00:10:12.879 All the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. 00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:21.759 This is important because strong churches are built of people who respond to the truth and who share that truth. 00:10:22.080 --> 00:10:30.639 As we think about what happens as we continue through the story, this is a strong church because this is a church filled of people who repented deeply. 00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:40.240 As you think about the culture and the things that were uh these people were engrossed in, one of the most common things was a magic art, superstition. 00:10:40.559 --> 00:10:43.600 Notice with me in verse 18 of Acts chapter 19. 00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:55.039 Many of those who were now believers came confessing and divulging their practices, and a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. 00:10:55.200 --> 00:11:00.000 And they counted the value of them and found it came to 50,000 pieces of silver. 00:11:00.320 --> 00:11:04.720 So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily. 00:11:05.840 --> 00:11:14.240 We talk about repentance today, and repentance is important, it's something that we're all called to do to turn from a pathway of life, to turn to God. 00:11:16.240 --> 00:11:21.919 But I want you to think about the value that this actually costs these people an emphasis. 00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:24.639 50,000 pieces of silver. 00:11:24.879 --> 00:11:30.559 If you think about 50,000 pieces of silver, each piece represents about one day's wage. 00:11:30.720 --> 00:11:36.000 That is 137 years worth of wages that were piled up at burn. 00:11:37.679 --> 00:11:38.159 Burn. 00:11:38.799 --> 00:11:40.399 We don't need that anymore. 00:11:41.519 --> 00:11:42.879 That is insufficient. 00:11:43.039 --> 00:11:43.759 That is wrong. 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:45.759 That's not bringing us closer to the Lord. 00:11:45.840 --> 00:11:47.360 We give it up completely. 00:11:53.200 --> 00:11:55.919 They confessed and divulged their practices. 00:11:56.159 --> 00:12:01.919 We see a pattern of confession throughout the scripture because confession brings healing, confession brings forgiveness. 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:10.080 These people are confessing their practices, they're not trying to hide who they were because they knew they weren't those things anymore. 00:12:11.919 --> 00:12:13.279 That's not who I am. 00:12:13.679 --> 00:12:16.799 I confess that, I turn from that and I turn to the Lord. 00:12:16.879 --> 00:12:18.320 I've given that up completely. 00:12:18.559 --> 00:12:25.919 Strong churches are built of people who don't just believe differently about the Lord, they live differently because of the Lord. 00:12:26.480 --> 00:12:33.600 When you think about a strong church, you see a church here that is faithful and that had visible fruits. 00:12:33.679 --> 00:12:35.120 We've seen that in the text already. 00:12:35.279 --> 00:12:39.120 The word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily. 00:12:39.360 --> 00:12:42.720 This was not a silent or quiet endeavor in Ephesus. 00:12:42.960 --> 00:12:49.679 In fact, starting in verse 23, we see the start of a riot, opposition arising to what's described as the way. 00:12:50.159 --> 00:12:56.000 There's opposition arising because their faith was visible, it was impactful, it was changing lives. 00:12:56.159 --> 00:13:01.039 And those who were resistant to that change did not like it. 00:13:01.919 --> 00:13:13.440 Strong churches are built of people who will get busy doing the work anyway, regardless of the cultural pressures, of the familial pressures that they might face. 00:13:13.840 --> 00:13:17.519 They want to do what's right and they'll be fruitful for it. 00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:27.200 I want to turn our attention to chapter 20 for just a moment as well, because this is a church who carefully heard the apostolic guidance of Paul. 00:13:27.519 --> 00:13:37.519 Paul's there with these brethren for three years, arguably more than any time he spent in any other place that we know about, except maybe Rome. 00:13:38.000 --> 00:13:48.879 He spends a lot of time with these brethren, and when he moves on at the beginning of Acts chapter 20, it's just a few verses later that he comes back through and he says, Gather the elder the Baptist to me. 00:13:49.039 --> 00:13:50.639 I'm going to talk to these guys. 00:13:50.799 --> 00:13:58.480 He cared about them, he had a relationship with them, and he's going to remind them of the time that he spent with them in verse 18 of Acts chapter 20. 00:13:58.639 --> 00:14:03.759 You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia. 00:14:03.919 --> 00:14:11.600 He's going to remind them of the work that they accomplished together, of the outcome of the gospel, of the fact that the Lord prevailed in Ephesus. 00:14:12.080 --> 00:14:16.240 He's also going to let them know that I'm probably not coming back. 00:14:16.879 --> 00:14:18.399 I'm going to be arrested. 00:14:20.480 --> 00:14:22.000 I'm not coming back. 00:14:22.320 --> 00:14:34.639 So he's going to tell them in verse 28: pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseer to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. 00:14:35.039 --> 00:14:41.840 I know that after my departure, fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 00:14:42.159 --> 00:14:48.960 And from among your own selves will the right men seeking twisted things to draw away the disciples after them. 00:14:49.679 --> 00:14:51.440 Paul's warning them, I'm not coming back. 00:14:51.840 --> 00:14:56.480 I'm not going to be here much longer to help with the issues, and you need to know what's going to happen. 00:14:56.720 --> 00:15:04.320 You have been entrusted as an overseer of this church, but there's going to be influences coming into this church that you need to be aware of. 00:15:04.639 --> 00:15:09.679 More than that, brethren, there's going to be influences arising from among you. 00:15:11.679 --> 00:15:15.919 That's not necessarily exclusive to those who are not within the elders. 00:15:17.039 --> 00:15:28.559 Paul could be telling these elders, those who are hearing him speak, from among you will arise those who will influence the church for all. 00:15:30.240 --> 00:15:34.559 But in verse 36, I want you to notice their response to this message. 00:15:35.759 --> 00:15:39.759 When Paul had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:42.159 And there was much weeping on the part of all. 00:15:42.559 --> 00:15:48.799 They embraced Paul and kissed him, being sorrowful, most of all, because of the word he had spoken. 00:15:49.200 --> 00:15:50.639 They would not see his face. 00:15:52.879 --> 00:15:57.759 Ultimately, there was the relational impact of this message that he was presenting to them. 00:15:57.919 --> submit to the leadership that God has placed over them. 00:16:20.639 --> 00:16:26.960 They follow the guidance of the apostles, and that leadership carefully defends the flock against spiritual things. 00:16:28.159 --> 00:16:31.200 Following the guidance of the apostles. 00:16:32.080 --> 00:16:38.000 As we think about just this snapshot image of the church in Ephesus, this is a strong church. 00:16:38.240 --> 00:16:43.919 This is a healthy church, a church that loved the Lord and was zealous for his work. 00:16:45.120 --> 00:16:51.519 As we move on in history just a few years later, Paul's gonna go back and write to these brethren. 00:16:51.759 --> 00:16:58.559 If you turn in your Bibles over to the book of Ephesians, Paul writes this letter just a few years after he left. 00:16:59.440 --> 00:17:05.599 And it's important to consider what Paul says here in this letter, because this is a church that began with love. 00:17:05.839 --> 00:17:10.640 And I believe the book of Ephesians is a book reminding them why they ought to keep loving God. 00:17:10.960 --> 00:17:15.599 If you go through this, you're gonna see several reminders that Paul gives them. 00:17:15.920 --> 00:17:18.880 He reminds them first of what God has done for them. 00:17:19.039 --> 00:17:22.960 Now we don't have time to comment on everything, so let's just pick up a few verses. 00:17:23.440 --> 00:17:26.480 In Ephesians chapter 1, beginning of verse 3. 00:17:26.720 --> 00:17:42.240 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ Jesus with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. 00:17:42.799 --> 00:17:54.960 In love, he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has blessed us in the beloved. 00:17:55.440 --> 00:18:20.720 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight, making known to prayer, beginning in verse 15, and he's gonna be thankful to God for them, and he's gonna petition God on their behalf in verse 18, asking that they have the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe according abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the those who they've departed, they've devoted themselves to these unsound, unfaithful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. 00:33:56.799 --> 00:34:01.440 Having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. 00:34:01.759 --> 00:34:03.599 Avoid such people. 00:34:05.279 --> 00:34:14.079 The reality is that there could be people sitting in this room this morning who were described by these verses. 00:34:16.320 --> 00:34:20.159 And maybe we don't see it because you have that appearance of godliness. 00:34:22.400 --> 00:34:24.559 But know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. know, they've got it figured out, but there's still a problem. 00:37:37.119 --> 00:37:40.400 He says in verse 4, but I have this against you. 00:37:41.119 --> 00:37:45.360 You have abandoned the love you had at first. 00:37:47.519 --> 00:37:50.480 You've abandoned the love, it's gone. 00:37:50.639 --> 00:37:53.679 You haven't just swerved from this, you've left it all together. 00:37:54.079 --> 00:38:04.719 The love that motivated them to pile up 137 years worth of wages and property and burn to spread the word mightily to all those around them. 00:38:05.039 --> 00:38:07.920 That type of motivating love is gone. 00:38:08.239 --> 00:38:13.280 And Jesus says, You need to remember from where you've fallen and repent. 00:38:14.559 --> 00:38:15.519 Turn back. 00:38:15.920 --> 00:38:17.280 That's the warning. 00:38:17.440 --> 00:38:23.519 Remember, therefore, in verse 5, from where you have fallen, repent and do the works you did at first. 00:38:24.320 --> 00:38:32.639 If not, I will come to you and remove your lamp sand from its place, unless you repent. 00:38:33.440 --> 00:38:35.920 I want you to think about that warning for a moment. 00:38:38.639 --> 00:38:40.400 I will remove
