Traditional Language Evening Prayer with words and prayers for The Fifth Sunday after Trinity

Michael

The service begins with Ubi Caritas sung by the Priory Choir, who also sing The Beatitudes (St Matthew 5) in a version by Vernon Thurgood, for many years Director of Music at The Priory until last year. The service is led by Dr Lesley Kneen and concludes with a Fugue by Francois Couperin (d 1733), played on the Organ by Hilary Noris, our current Director of Music. A short address and prayers are given by The Rector.

The texts of the choral pieces are shown below :

Ubi Caritas

Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est …

Where charity and love are, God is there. Christ’s love has gathered us into one. Let us rejoice and be pleased in him. Let us fear and let us love the living God. And may we love each other with a sincere heart.

Beatitudes

Show us your ways, O Lord : teach us your paths.
Blest are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heav’n.
Blest are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blest are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (Show us your ways…)
Blest are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blest are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Show us your ways…)
Blest are the peacemakers: for they shall be called God’s sons.
Blest are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: the kingdom of heav’n is theirs.
Show us your ways, O Lord : teach us your paths.
