We have the last trip over I got a great case about targeting.
SPEAKER_03:All right, boys, we are back. Field notes 11. It it's been a couple weeks, probably at least three weeks, I feel like, since since we recorded, I don't think we've recorded in December yet. Um, so it's not that things have been slow because people have been getting it done, and we've we've still been putting deer on the ground, Mr. Frank. There, Mr. Squatch. Welcome to the uh to the Jersey Killing Club, Squatch. Yeah, thank you. It's uh it's a pleasure, it's a pleasure. Um, before we get into Frank's hunt, because no one cares about that guy. Uh the more important hunt, Squatch. Go go over, like you know, yeah, your your hunt and everything like that. Uh, first was that the first ever hunt in in New Jersey?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah, that was my first ever hunt in New Jersey. Yeah, oh, one for one. I love it. Yeah, yeah, that was uh my first time, you know, getting out there. I mean, I did go the Saturday before the Saturday before that. I was out there with them, so it really was you know uh a warm-up basically, but the conditions were horrible the first day we were out there. I mean, it was windy, like 30 30 mile an hour winds, and um it was freaking cold, man. I'd never been so cold in my life. And uh Frank was we had a bear on the property that's been a nuisance bear, and we we were trying to target that. I really don't want to shoot you know the bucks that these guys have been after for a while, but you know, they invited me in and said, Hey, you know what? If you get the opportunity, let it fly. And I said, I'll I'll think about it. You know, it's very nice of you guys to offer that opportunity. But you know, as a new guy in the in the property, I I really just wanted to kill the bear, I was really there for the bear. And um, I sat all day Saturday back. You know, we we took a break in the afternoon, went back out um from the morning hunt. Uh, we had a great time. I mean, we we had a lot of fun, but just nothing happened. The wind was just blowing too much, and it got really crappy, and um nothing happened. I I did leave my saddle set up uh there in the tree so I could come back, you know, uh the on the weekend. And uh Frank said, Listen, he said, why don't you get up in my ladder stand? Um, I got a perfect spot, it's just up a little ways from where you were. Uh, you'll be hunting basically almost in the same area, but you'd be a little more comfortable. You'd be up my ladder stand. Well, so I I walked up there. Uh Frank dropped me off at the top of the hill because I'm just too fat to walk that hill. It's too hard. And uh he dropped me off in the morning, and then uh I made it made it over to the ladder stand. And I got up in it, and geez, it's got a foot rest, it's got a shooting rest. I was in heaven. I was like, dude, you set me up. This is too nice. I feel like I'm in like a little Taj Mahal up here. And the conditions were perfect, there was no wind. Um, it was chilly. I think it was still in like maybe the upper teens, 20s. Yeah, and um the other two, you know, Frank and uh Jay, they had gone out. Their Jay was set up behind me about 150 yards, and Frank was probably about another four or five hundred from Jay. And uh, right at right as I got in the stand, I heard something walking, and I was still getting set up, and lo and behold, the deer had came in, followed me in, and uh I couldn't do anything, you know. It was before legal shooting light, so I was just watching it walk around kind of in the dark, but it we had quite a bit of moonlight, and I was like, Wow, cool, it's gonna be a good day. Already got a deer by me. This is awesome, you know. Frank Frank knows the property. Man, I'm just a new guy there, so uh, you know, I had never second guess my brother. I'm like, he knows the land, he shoots bucks here. There, I'm like, he's gonna put me on animals. So, anyway, sat there a little bit. I seen some action moving up to my left-hand side. There's a like a small ridge that drops down to where I am, and I seen a deer chasing another deer. Now, when Frank invited me, I don't really hunt shotgun. I mean, I'm I the only time I use a shotgun is hunting rabbits, but I have a beautiful bell uh Belgian-made Browning A5, and it came with a slug barrel, but it's iron sights, I don't have a scope on it. So I asked Frank, I said, Is that okay? And he's like, Yeah, bro, can you hit stuff with it? I was like, Yeah, I showed him the target. He's like, Bring it, okay. So me and my trusty A5 are up there in the stand, and I see this buck kind of chasing this dough around, and he comes down the hill, and I'm I gotta take my binoculars, and I'm looking, and I'm like, God dang it, that's a four-pointer. I'm pretty sure. I guess I'm gonna take the deer. I uh it's a smaller buck, I usually don't shoot deer like that, but it was the last day of the shotgun season. Those guys told me to shoot whatever I wanted, they didn't want me to go home empty-handed. So the deer walks in. Uh, he starts the quarter a little bit away from me, and he's in between two trees. I had a good solid rest, and I just kind of centered the front sight in the rear sight, like right on the main kill area in the chest, and I touched it off and he dropped. And I was like, Holy cow! I was like, that was awesome. But he was trying to pick himself up, he was he was trying to get up on his front legs, so I I I let another one rip, and uh he was down after that, like you know, basically right off the bat, and I just kept an eye on him for maybe you know a little bit, and he he was done, he was down for the count. So, right away, you know, the phone's going off, and this and that. And he's like, Did you get one? I'm like, Yeah, man. He's like, Oh, holy cow, that's great! You know, so happy, you know, he put me in the right spot, and you know, everything kind of came together at 7:15 in the morning, man. I mean, it was like perfect, you know. So uh I was just really happy I could actually still shoot that good with with that setup, and uh got got waiting a little while, seen like 20 more deer come in. Um they fed around and kind of went down to his other spot, and uh it was awesome, man. You know, we we we waited a while, we were kind of hoping the bear would come back through. Uh didn't happen. And uh Frank said, What's up? What do you want to do? I said, I don't know, let's let's get the deer out of here. It's like 9:30-ish. Okay, I'll come up and meet you. So came up with his nice quad there, and we loaded it in the back of the jet sled and brought it back down to the house and went and got breakfast and celebrated and hung out for a little bit and you know, got some nice pictures with it and everything, and then uh you know, loaded it up in the truck. And I went home because the the next day I we had a storm coming, and you know, I had to get ready for that. So uh, but overall, man, you know, the kill's awesome. I mean, it was a lot of fun, but it's great just hanging out with your brothers, Mike. You know how it is when you're hanging out with everybody, you're on a hunt, you're you're just doing stuff together, and uh, you know, they they they treat me really good, man. I mean, I I you know, for somebody to say, hey, sit where I sit or do something like that, that means a lot. I mean, we help each other out, and uh and it all came together, and it was a great day. I I I didn't get a lot of meat off my first year because that deer had laid down overnight, so I was grateful that I got more meat in the freezer for all this, and uh, I just got done grinding them some of the meat up tonight and cut the rest of it up last night. So I'm happy, happy man. I'm uh I broke my new Jersey cherry. I'm official New Jersey guy now. I can I can say, you know, like hey, right, I could do the fist pump, I could do the fist pump, you know.
SPEAKER_02:That's what I'm talking about.
SPEAKER_03:Um, yeah, I mean, besides the the whole killing aspect, you know, we all love to kill stuff, but yeah, man, when when you're those camp vibes or when you're you're going to travel somewhere or or whatever, when you're hunting with somebody, it's just a whole different I don't know. It's you don't even have to kill something. Yeah, I mean, killing stuff is the bonus at that point, you know what I mean? It's yeah, it's um that's why we love doing bear camp and everything like that. We're out there for a week now, you know. We we love now to go Delaware and it's like oh yeah, it's just a whole different type of vibes because you're with the boys, you're hanging out, things, things like that, and yeah, like you know, Fank uh Fank Frank and you know, it's it's love going to that to that property, you know, and we're you know, from myself too, like very fortunate that that Frank has the the um the not only the friendship, but basically like the the brotherhood that that he has and you know with with um with them over there and everything like that. And they're very you know, very welcoming. Um you know, and it's always been great to I love going there. You know, I will travel anytime I get a chance to go. Even if it's like an hour, I drove all the way an hour just to go see Frank's, but it's like you know, yeah, come on, come on over, and yeah, you know, once you get there, it's nothing but good vibes and everything like that. You know, they got the dog, he's got the dog going, and you know playing with the dog and and watching the dog work too as well, because that that puts it uh it's all over that property and and everything like that. But um nothing nothing but good good vibes over there, yeah.
SPEAKER_01:No, uh, you know, and I I I I I've already thanked Jay a million times up and down. I I you know kind of like gave him a gift of uh of a chicken coop door that opens automatically, you know, just as a small you know gift of my gratitude for coming over there. But you know, he's got stuff he needs welded up and stuff. So we're gonna take a day and go over and just you know try to fix some stuff up for him and help him out because it's just you know, I I like to do good people that do good by me, I do good back. And you know, Jay's an awesome guy. I mean, you know, think about it, right? Think about it. Let's let's let's take this his scenario here. Okay, you know, you got a hundred acres, it's farmland, it's hardwoods, you got a good dude that you allow to go. You've been a childhood friend with for a long time. Who's Frank? You guys could hem that up, man. You could say, look, you know, we don't shoot deer here, we don't do anything, you know, and you guys do like you kill deer and bear, and then you go, hey, you know, you want to come hunt, and it's like, what really? You know, and it's to have that door open. I mean, it's just it says a lot about people that they're they're trusting, they like you, you know, and it's like you know, it's just far and a few between these days. People are so freaking jealous, and just you know, everybody's like, Oh, screw you, you know, you're not gonna hunt where I hunt. I I only got my deer, they're my deer. These guys ain't like that, man. You know, and I mean you've known Frank a long time and and stuff, and Frank you know, piece of work, gosh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, but it's like but it's like you know, you go through that and you kind of you know, and you see everybody. I mean, it's genuine, man. It's not a freaking act, it everybody's cool, you know. And uh that says a lot, it says a lot because I think I think that's a dying breed. I don't think there's too many people like that in this world. I mean, there's still a good bunch of people, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_03:I think I think I told you guys, right? I I think the on the last field notes, you know, when we went out to PA and everything like that. Um both Ethan and I shot shot those does, right? And there is a guy a couple hundred yards away from us, so Ethan shot I hiked it to to where Ethan is, sat down where Ethan is, yeah. Um, and then maybe 15 minutes later, the guy that's a couple hundred, he shoots a doe. He shot uh uh a doe and everything like that, and then maybe 20 20 minutes later, I shoot a doe, you know what I mean? And we ended up, you know, we're all looking for the for a deer at the same time, and we go to talk to him. And let me tell you, a very rare opportunity. I truly thought this this guy was gonna be pissed off, right? Truly did, you know what I mean? Right. And the two guys that we ended up meeting now have been such so great to us. They they helped us with the deer, they're like we took their numbers down. Yeah, uh, they said anytime we want to come up, just come up and just text them, da da da. We can park, you know, where the where they stay, because it where the uh the wild wild land is state land is over there. There's a residential right right next door before you you walk in, and they're like, listen, let us know. Bow season, gun season, whatever, just come park here. You know, you can walk in, you know, do do whatever you need. And it's how that's such a rare thing now, yeah. Especially like you know, when you're set up and you know, yet again, Ethan didn't realize he was setting up, you know, we're we're going in the dark, like we didn't he didn't know. He sets up in a great spot and he just turns his head in a couple hundred yards. You see some orange and and everything like that. It's a guy in a tree and a and a ladder stand, you know what I mean? But you know, Ethan shot a deer, and most people would probably get pissed off after that, you know what I mean? And say that, oh, that's my deer, and like you know, call cause a big issue, you know, and and you know, then here then comes another hunter coming through the woods as as in me, and you know what I mean. You're like he could have been like, Oh, fuck these guys, you know, they fucking suck, like yada yada yada, but the you know, they were great, helped us out big time, like really big time. Um and yeah, just generally like great guys that we ran into, and it is a very rare type of thing that you see now, and a part of it is jealousy. Um, you know, part of it being just being very selfish. Um and you know, and I've always told people like people like, oh, you you know, you're so friendly when you talk to people, like you know, when you when you I meet a lot of guys hunting, and honestly, I'm yeah, I'm pretty goddamn friendly because it's state land. It's not like that. This isn't like this isn't my private 20, 30, 40 acre property where you know, if I see another hunter hunting the same spot, like that's a little different. Like, you know what I mean? But this is state land, and yeah, you know what? I want to kill big deer and I want to kill deer, but I always tell people what makes me, I think, better than that gives me people the or gives me that heads up or the one up on people is I can out hunt people. Like I I can, you know, from September 1st till you know mid till Thanksgiving, I sat 50 times. You know what I mean? Not many people are are doing that. So yeah, you know what? I'll be nice to you, you know. You know, I'll talk to you like yada yada yada. As long as you're not a douchebag, like I'm gonna have no no issues, you know, with you. If you come at me wrong, then that's a whole different that's a whole different situation, you know. But I I think people for a sport that unfortunately that's dying and under attack, like you know, we really need to um come together as as one. And that leads me real quick before I freaking forget, because I do not want to forget this. Um it is what I sent in the post. Um, and this is crucial for all New Jersey, um, New Jersey hunters. Um, give me one second. All right, so New Jersey Fish and Game Council is under attack. Bear hunts, freshwater fishing, hunting, hunting, uh, and fishing legislative issues, all these different things. Um basically, what is trying to be pushed now? There are a bill that's the A6055 and S4893, would remove three sportsmen from fishing game council and replace them with animal welfare advocates, including a possible chair. This means less science-based management and more anti-hunting and anti-fishing influences on decisions that directly affect you. Why it matters to us if the bill passes, sportsmen can expect reduced hunting, fishing, and trapping opportunities, restricted access to land and water, policy shaped by groups who don't fund or participate in conservation. You know, and one thing for for sure, certain, if this happens, you can kiss New Jersey's bear bear season. Okay, you know what I mean. Um, and I I will a hundred percent say like um I'll be making a post about this tomorrow and everything like that, with you know, with probably with this clip and everything, everything like that. But you know, we gotta take action, we gotta call, email, do whatever we can because this is something unfortunately of the state of just New Jersey. I could see it taking effect if we really don't step up. You know what I mean? We are already a very liberal democratic state that is already has a lot of pressure um from anti-hunters, obviously with with the bear being the the number one, what we had gone through, what I think four four years ago, three or four years ago. Um you know, so we we've already seen it, but you know, it's so this is something all New Jersey uh fishing, uh hunting, everything like that. If you can, we need to help try to stop this as as best we can because I'll tell you that will be the the straw that breaks the camel's back for us. Um, and I mean if that actually happens, like I would very much well really look at maybe moving out of the state if they really um go for that. And you know, the the biggest thing that that always like just kills me about this is you don't do anything for hunting conserv for kind of conservation at all. You say you're protecting the animals, but how are you actually uh protecting the animals? You don't pay you you don't pay anything, right? You you you don't pay anything, land is still being taken, and instead of saying, Hey, you know what, let's not go after hunters, which is probably the easiest thing to do, why don't we go over the real situation as all the land that's being taken and being developed and being destroyed? You know what I mean? That's really probably the number one issue. And if they did that, I would a hundred percent be like, you know what, that's something I would I would fight with with you, uh, you know, with yeah, because that is such a serious issue. And I mean, I don't know, yeah, if up by Frank, you know, you're how much you're seeing it, but here, man, yeah, it is like every time I drive, it's like a new block of woods is just being cut down to be developed.
SPEAKER_02:No, same here, same here. You see it little by little. It's yeah, you know, the woods are getting smaller and smaller, man.
SPEAKER_01:So it's even here in New York, you know, it's the same thing, like you know, here it's just getting really populated anymore. It's just it sucks, you know. I I lost uh you know. 58 acres that I hunted on right here by the house just because you know just progress, I guess. But you know, it I I guess you know it happens to everybody sooner or later, you know, things happen. But you know, thank God we we keep these policies, you know, there's there's state land, there's there's DEP land, there's public land for us to get on. I mean, as much as it kind of sucks sometimes, at least we still got that. And you know, but like you said, stay on these legislators, you know, get these people get a bug in your ear because you know if you think about it, all the you know, tree huggers, your your your PETA people, stuff like that, they don't stop. They don't go, Well, yeah, tomorrow I'll rate that guy. When they hear stuff go on, they're on it. And that's the difference between you know us and them, unfortunately. They they you know, they just do what they have to do and they don't care. Well, you know, we'll sit here and bitch about it, but did anybody pick up the phone? Did anybody call anybody? Did anybody you know make an email to anybody? Yeah, maybe a couple guys, but not like they do, and that's why they win. So, you know, you need to take action, people need to step up, quit your belly aching, and make it count. Call people, talk to people, get the word out there, like Mike. You're you're getting the word out there to everybody. You're saying, Hey, this bill's on the table. Now, not that I'm not from Jersey, so I don't know, but didn't they stop the bear hunt a while ago? And this is why you have an overpopulation here right now, yeah, right?
SPEAKER_03:Yep, why it's not I wouldn't say it's the like we've had a very big bear population, yeah. Yeah, um, I think what really like was is the the like the big main problem is so when it first happened, yeah, they were able to get it where they cut it out of state land, yeah. And I think at the time, and yet again, I would I would have to go back to like a very old episode where I went over a lot of the numbers, right? But I think like at the time, 49% of the bear harvests were on state land. Okay, so they cut out state land first, and you saw a huge number of bears on state land or bears that were on that private border of state land, just stay a lot of them stayed on state land. Um, and then they got it to where it was all property, and it that only lasted a year and a half, I think. Right, yeah, yeah, probably so I because I don't even think it got through the full second year because of the the problem that was that was happening, yeah. Yeah, um, so yeah, we've always had the number, but yeah, it it you made it 10 just you know 10 times worse.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, and even I rem I remember even on um on federal land, you couldn't hunt them up until like a couple years ago, even though there was a bear season, it was closed on federal land, yeah, yeah. Up until like a couple years ago, so yeah.
SPEAKER_01:So, like if you don't hunt, if if these guys don't hunt these bears and we don't cut hunt these bears. I mean, Frank, you saw a mother with four cubs, yeah. Well with four cubs, so that's one bear mother that had four cubs, just one. So multiply all the female bear that are in Jersey times four. That's a lot of bear. If you don't do something in two years, that's gonna be a freaking riot. You're and not to mention all the damage that they're gonna cause the vehicles, collisions on parkways, busy roads, damage to people's farms, you know, messing with the livestock, and not only that, getting in your garbage, pulling your garbage around, destroying stuff. I mean, you legislators in New Jersey better wake up and realize if you don't do something with keeping this the way you're running it, or even better, allow more bear take, you're gonna have a serious overpopulation of black bear, and you're gonna have a big problem on your hands.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, um, agreed. And and it's like it's one of those things that there's such a big difference between South and North Jersey because South Jersey just doesn't have any bears, right? So they don't, you know, they don't see the problem like like we do. Um, you know, and it's just another thing. Like, I'll I'll give you for instance, like the bobcat population. I saw another bobcat again. So that's yeah, that's you know, which is great. I love seeing that. Um, you know, yet again, that that bobcat population is gonna grow in West Jersey. Yep, and you know, I read a I read an article that the reason why they really can't move to the south is because all the highways, yeah. So all the tag ones, they don't they don't make it down there because they get hit and everything like that. Um, yeah, you know, and that's another like situation. You're you're telling us that uh you care about wildlife, but yet again, so many wildlife get hit every single day, you know, and you you just want to build and build and build like bobcats is a is an animal that needs a lot of space. The males are it's just like mountain lions, yeah. Not as big of a what's a space as a as a territory, but the males do spread out and they need to be spread out, and they can't be in the same territory as other male male cats. Then you you look at the coyote situation that that we have. You're you're not getting you know, you're you're not getting that under control. I would like to see, and yet again, it probably won't ever happen, but you know, maybe some more laws for you know for us to hunt, you know, at night. I get it, it's you know, but we're at a huge disadvantage of shooting shotgun at at night versus versus a rifle, you know what I mean? Uh there's some things that because you know what, what's gonna end up happening, god forbid, I knock on wood because I don't want it to happen, but these coyotes are getting so big, what's gonna happen when they when they take a little kid?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, you know it's already a big a big problem with them attacking people, attacking pets. Um you know, I I worry here because there's a good population of coyotes here, and I got land behind the house. Um, the beagles don't go outside without bells on. My my hunting bells are on them. Bells kind of fend away a uh a coyote because they think it they associate that sound with a human. Um, but the bad thing is when I let the dogs out in the morning, they bay, they bark. And I'll hear coyotes set off just from that, you know, further away. But my favorite time of the year is here, boys, because better season.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, for you, yeah.
SPEAKER_01:And you know, I'll be making my videos, you know, popping these coyotes and fox and bobcats and stuff at night. Um Frankie, you gotta get up, you know. Mike, if you can spare a night or something, you want to come up, man, and hunt me. Oh, 100%. Yep, more than welcome, man. I mean, more than welcome. Um it's it's a riot, man. It's a hoot, it's a real freaking hoot because it's just so cool, man. You're you're you know, you're being hunted. You're not hunting, you're you're being hunted.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01:And you know, if you want to have a good deer population, you want to have you know a safe area, shoot the damn coyotes because I'll tell you what. And anybody says anything, coyotes weren't of this area, they weren't native to New York, okay? They weren't native to New Jersey, they were out west. And what people don't understand is coyotes moved north and then came east. And as they did, they were up near the Canadian border and they cross bred with wolves. And I've shot coyotes here, no lie, in access to 75 pounds. Okay. When you scalp them, you you you do a European mount, they have that bone, that mandible, in the center of their skull like a wolf. Now, that's not normal because coyotes out west don't have it, and that mandible is a genetic thing that was uh through mutation for wolves to be able to chew through elk bone, big animal bones, and not break the skull. The jaw had to be stronger, and that's where a wolf has that. And they're finding it. You find it in coyotes. And I'm telling you, these coyotes here, they're no slouch, man. I mean, they are no slouch, they're they're every bit of of you know 65 pounds, easy.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, um, you know, that's what that's what we got. We got big, big coyotes. Yeah, of course. Probably probably like three, four years ago. Um, yeah, Wendy. I don't I don't know if any of you guys know her. Um she used to be on on the show all the time. Um killed a coyote the size of her. And it literally it's that it's that coyote mixed with um with wolf because it looks exactly like look exactly like beautiful. We have I will say we have beautiful dogs here and in our area from New York to to here, and I think a big part of it, yet again, you look at the food source. Uh I was I was with um with our head coach, our our high school's head coach, and he was asking me, you know, all these questions, and he goes, I go, listen, one thing you could say, food is not a problem for any animal we have in New Jersey. You know, we we do have a really great food, and we haven't had a very nasty winter. Hopefully, this winter is shaping up to be that winter. You know, this is the earliest we've gotten a snowstorm like this in a very long time. Who's also also haven't gotten big snowstorms in the last couple years. Um, it's been really cold since really, you know, Thanksgiving, the wind chill, everything like that. You know, I know it warms up a little bit, but I think we're actually supposed to have another storm coming in after that and everything like that. Um, on on the early radar. So, you know, you you look at that and it's like, well, these animals, they they just they have the food source, you know, and then coyotes have have a great food source.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, yeah. I just I just showed squatch the other day. I got I had a video of I think it was a pack of three or four, one right behind the other, just single file.
SPEAKER_01:We heard them. We heard them the other morning.
SPEAKER_02:We heard them the other one.
SPEAKER_01:We heard them the other morning when we were out.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, yep. Yeah, our our other uh our other Zach, um, he's on a den of he's right by the den. I mean, he's seen he saw a giant one, you know. Hopefully knock on wood, you know, something big happens that we'll that we'll talk about next week because he's he's on them with the with the bow and everything like that. Cool. Um, and then we might even go down there and just go bow hunt them because it's a bow hunting, it's a bow only zone. So really we'd be able, yeah. We we have to we'd have to bow hunt them, but um I'm I missed one earlier, you know, in the year, and it was just a such a unique creature, and you would think for a for a predator, they're so in tune with their senses. Oh yeah, so jittery, and you know, and that is to me, like you get big animals, big, like you look at bears and lions and everything like that, and they just are they're aware of their surroundings, but they know they're the biggest, baddest thing, and really nothing is really gonna fuck with them. But always keep that, like you know, they're not trusting of you know, they they keep their senses in their wick, and any little noise when you draw back all these things, they'll catch you just real, real quick. Um, a very formidable animal to to be hunting with the bow, even even with the gun, you know what I mean. You know, um even with the gun, I know squash has we've talked about it before, but everything's kind of be got to be right in in those situations, too, as well.
SPEAKER_01:It's the wind, man. Their their noses are so good and they play the wind. There, there's no better hunter out there than a coyote, man. I'm telling you. I mean, if if if everything isn't perfect, you will not get them. And I've had dogs hang up. You know, you talk about turkey hunting, turkey hunting's fun. But you get a turkey hanging up, coyotes are 10 times worse. I mean, I had I had a pack that was going crazy, and I had put you know, deer carcass out for them, and I chained it to a tree, like wired it to the tree, and they managed to bust it free. So I went to that spot and I'm you know, and I'm and they they pull it off into the orchard or in the tree line, and they're they're barking at me chat because I'm challenging them, thinking they're thinking I'm another pack of uh coyotes, but they won't come out for me to shoot, they're guarding what they're eating. So they'll talk, they'll chat or bark, they'll get all pissed off at me, but they won't come in to give me a shot, they're just hanging by their food because they're protecting what's theirs, and they think I'm another pack of coyotes coming in to challenge them. And if I had them going off for like a half an hour the one night, and I'm like, what the hell is going on? I'm like, why won't they come in? And I'd stop and I'm like, all right, screw it, you know, I'll come back to the spot later on. So I'd leave, go back, come back, same damn thing again. Um I couldn't figure out what was going on, and I was like, Oh, and I walked in to the woods the next day, and I saw it was a car had hit a deer, and they were over that pile, and they wouldn't come in any closer. They talked to you, but they were like, No, we're not leaving our food source, we're hanging by it, we're gonna defend it. And I'm just I'm like, you know, I'm getting like itchy trigger finger. I'm sitting there, I'm like, Come on, man, I want to shoot you guys, come in. And they just wouldn't leave it. And I was like, Okay, well, that's that's food for thought, because you know, if you're gonna put a gut pile out there, you know, like I got this carcass from Mysterio shot there, so I'm gonna put that out soon, you know, and then hunt over it. But I'm not gonna do a big pile, like I'm gonna put some stuff out there and just keep them, you know, kind of like interested in it, and then add a little more as I need to. Because last year I just went nuts. I put a whole pile out, and it was like it was gone. I went back the next day. I'm like, there's no way they devoured, they devoured it. I mean, they took that thing. I the hide and everything. I put the hide there, the hide's the first thing they drag off. So I was like, Holy crap, these things are just nuts, man. And I'm telling you, I would not want to be hurt and not be able like if you're crawling out of the woods, I would not want to be around them. You know, they would they would do some bad, bad things to you, man. And I mean, I've seen what they've done to stuff and how big, you know, how much of a pack there is. Yeah, but it's all right. The mighty 204 with the ATN scope's gonna wreak havoc on them this year.
SPEAKER_03:Um now on on that note, Mr. Mr. Frank, keeping um heating up completely. Have you you've you've heated up, you're feeling good. You know, we're back to kind of the the Frank from from last year. Uh thank god. Thank God. You know, um ever since you you got your bow readjusted and everything like that, you've you've definitely definitely heated up, and you know, another just great, great buck on the ground um there on that property. I mean, in those two years that you've been on that property, you've you've shot some incredible animals. Um you know, so and I will just say I know it's extremely cold. This is the one freaking time in the last two years Frank has not called me when and I had to call him and curse him out. Yeah, he says, What are you doing? You can't fuck up a tradition. Yeah, no, you're right, you're right.
SPEAKER_02:Now no, you're right. I that one I I completely uh I fucked that one up.
SPEAKER_03:I will tell you today when when it's that cold, everything goes out, everything goes out the window. Like I like all your even me, like for for six days, man, it was brutally cold. The only thing I want to do is get into my tree and just sit there and try to be warm. I like I usually and this is my end. That's probably why I'm a big, you know, we we've gone over it. Like, I like to say my prayer. Um, once I get into, you know, I like to uh you know talk to my grandpa and things like that. And you know, I was so cold that that didn't even like didn't even go into. I was so like, I don't whatever, and it's like a constant thing. Once we get this late into the into the year, yeah, my mindset of preparation and everything that I do just goes out the window. Yep. I just want to get in, out, kill, hopefully kill something, and and get it done quick. So I I I get it, Frank. I get it.
SPEAKER_02:No, I mean honestly, that's how I felt, man. I I mean that opening day just killed me, man. It was it was freaking that wind, and uh we didn't see we didn't see that many deer, I don't think, in the morning. No, I saw quite a few at night, but um it was just brutal. But the second day, unfortunately, I I couldn't get out in the morning. I had to go back to work for a half a day. So I was like, all right, I was like, well, as soon as I get out, I'm gonna, you know, I know where I'm going, so I'm gonna get back in there. And you know, there's one thing I told Squatch, and he actually even agreed with me, is I know a lot of people are against taking like the four-wheelers up and stuff, and I was too like the first year I was very scared to do it, but this year I really pushed the envelope with like driving, not like I don't go, you know, a hundred yards for my tree stand, but I go pretty far on the four-wheeler, and you know, it doesn't seem to bother them. They know they know I'm coming there with a purpose. They think, all right, he's throwing food or whatever, he's just working on the farm.
SPEAKER_03:So, but I mean, how often, like I imagine, Frank, like in and you guys, and this is what I've kind of they get so used to these things, yeah. And it becomes a listen, we should uh and pa, you think after the first shot, no deers would deer would show up. Boom, another shot. Okay, no more deer. Boom, another one. You know, it goes back to when when um Mike and them tripled up on their bears one after another, like while they were gun, like there's just certain things that really like you would think affects them, yeah, but doesn't affect them in the way that we would, you know, we would really think, and it's crazy because you could be walking through the woods and you're gonna bust a bunch of deer, yeah. Literally, yeah. It's it blows my mind sometimes how deer react to certain things, but yeah, you know, you guys use that that four wheeler. You he, you know, you guys are using it all throughout the year. You are using it, like you said, to work on the property and everything like that. So it becomes kind of like a everyday, and then imagine all the other properties around that kind of do the same thing that are working on the property.
SPEAKER_02:property and probably driving up probably even closer than you to go get into their into the literally yep yeah I mean it you know it doesn't like like I was saying before it doesn't seem to bother him I mean I dropped Squatch off and within a couple minutes he's like yo I got deer ready like as soon as you turned around and left you know like so but I think they thought I thought I think they just thought you were bringing bait up there because they're used to hearing the quad going up yeah and then you know that's what I think I I they associate it with and you know not only that the farm you're always doing something on the farm so yeah no they don't they don't associate it with danger I mean you're you walking in would be more danger to them than that quad riding in no you're right and you know that's but you know back to what I was saying before it's you know just driving up there I mean especially with in these temperatures it's freaking freezing and I'm taking the quad up so that don't help I can't feel my hands happen I couldn't feel my thumb yeah I don't know but uh I finally I finally get up to my one spot on the Tuesday in this um I really didn't expect to see this buck the one that I got I've been after him while I've been watching him since August and he was very he was very sporadic so he would come when I would get him on camera I knew he was there he would only be there for a day or two and then he would disappear for a couple weeks and then another you have another window a day or two and then disappear so I got I think a picture of him a couple days before and I'm like all right well at least I know nobody got him he's he's still alive so um I'm like I kind of still got a good chance at him I didn't see him on the side I was on but I was like all right well at least I know he's still in the area so I got out of work threw my clothes on met up with my buddy Jay he's like where are you gonna go I'm like well you know where I'm going I'm going to my saddle I'm going on the other side where where I shot where I shot my you know my big eight door in the rut he was like all right he's like I'm gonna go up I'll go on the other side so we both take our quads up we split up I I get in there probably around like 130 and I'm just chilling out i st I think I I saw one doe just hanging out and uh as it starts to get dark I'm starting to see more and deer funnel in I think I saw like I think like six more does and that was it and the good thing is that I love about the snow too is when you can not only see him but you can hear them coming so I can hear I can hear walking behind me so I turn around and I see two does coming in I was like I was like okay well that's good but I don't see him so I almost didn't turn around because I kept hearing the noise and I'm kind of looking in in like this one thicket where I think if he if him or one of my other shooters come out it's gonna be in this area.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah and uh I mean I don't know something told me to turn around and it's literally like I think it was like 20 minutes before before like you know um shooting times over and I turn around and I see him I'd even I didn't even have to pick up like the binoculars or the scope like I already knew it was him I see him coming nice and slow and I'm like I'm like oh my god it it's him it's him so like I'm trying to like figure out how I'm gonna turn around because he's behind me and like I got my big winter boots on so I can't turn around the saddle like I normally could yeah I'm like how and like I don't know if if this ever happened to you Mike but if you ever know with like um with your bridge like it bumps your stock like you kind of got to come over it with the gun no and I'm gonna tell you why I don't gun hunt that much like I do it a few times I do it a few times a year and that that's kind of like so this was six days the first two hunts were with the bell because I wanted to try to get the and then after that I was going after a bear because now I have uh a mother with two or three cubs um but big cubs not like they're on their own after this winter like once spring comes these are bears that are fully gonna be be on their own um so I wouldn't have really I wouldn't have felt some type of way if I would have shot the mother because these are very established big bears like yeah they're a little smaller than her but they're they're not that much smaller than her they're gonna be fine yeah um but I hunting with all this gear on and I love hunting from September to like November because I don't feel like I weigh like 500 freaking pounds and I can't freaking move with all this stuff on and I could see why it is a little difficult to gun hunt with the saddle yeah um because even like I had a deer coming in and I don't think he I would have shot him but I don't think he was illegal and I yet again I don't I know they wanted to take away the point restriction I don't know if they have or not yet but I just played it like the point restriction is still in effect um at one of the spots that I hunt um but man I drop freaking spray out the thing I was knocking things I was trying to like maneuver so it's it's bigger than a bow. You know it's a little more of an awkward thing to have in the saddle versus versus the bow in in my opinion.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah yeah no you're absolutely right because that's that's what I ran into because I'm trying to I'm trying to watch him and I'm on this little ass tree and I'm trying to turn like the tree's actually moving too and I'm shifting that's how small this damn tree was but I finally I finally get turned around and I'm thinking to myself all right like how am I going to make this happen so what and I I was telling Squatch what I had to do was I had one foot on the platform and I usually keep my one like my last step kind of like right there so I had to step down into my last step so one foot was on the step one foot was on the platform and I somehow made it turn around and as I'm aiming him he he notices me moving he's sitting there watching me so I remember when I look through the scope right away my scope fogged up because now like I'm like and it's freezing out yeah it's cold I'm like cleaning the scope off and I look again and he's sitting there staring at me and now he knows he sees me now so I remember I'm like he's like 90 yards away I'm like you're gonna have to shoot him like he's good he's gonna leave and all of a sudden I remember I seen him he he turned he like turns a little bit to walk away and he just gave me that that perfect angle where I I could see right behind his shoulder and his shoulder I just put it on him and I shot him and I I seen him I seen him hit and he almost he kind of like he dipped down and I can hear him and there's a rock wall like probably about like 10 yards away from him and that's actually once he hopped that rock wall he was on the other property so I try to shoot him again real quick but I end up missing him the second shot I hear him hit the wall he jump he jump he somehow gets over the wall and onto the other property so I'm like oh so now I'm like I'm rushing I'm like my buddy Jay he had shot a six pointer he got his so he hears me shoot so he start he so he starts coming over his deer's already on his four wheeler he comes over he goes hey did you get him I said I said I I think so it was a good like it looked like a good shot I said it was with like 90 yards away I said I I didn't go check yet he's like all right well you know uh he's like I'll come with you let's go check he's like how big was it I was like it's that big white eight I've been after this whole year he's like you would he's like I he's he's like you would he goes he goes you freaking open ass man he goes I let you hunt the farm and you shot every big buck on this farm so far yeah and I'm like I'm like I'm sorry like you know he was like no he's like no it's all good it's all good let's go look so we get over there you know we um uh I think yeah we found the blow we start tracking it to the wall he calls up the landowner and you know thank god and this is it the same property that killed that giant then like the next day or no no no no that one was uh was across the street when they shot that one but um this one he they were you know again like the landowners they're they're very this is where it comes to like this is how it should be because as soon as we called them up they're like I will never tell you guys no that you can't go look for a dare yeah the the guy's like of course anytime I'm glad you guys called like you know you guys are more welcome go ahead look and uh he's like all right like we got the go ahead let's go so we ended up going over the wall and now I could I found two spots where I could see him he's dragging you know and I told Jay I was like look I was like you see that he's like yeah what is that and I'm like I'm like he's dragging the front half of his body like it's a good shot man he shouldn't be far yeah and uh we get out to like this big clearing and I'm looking around and I and Jay's over there looking he goes oh Frank he goes it ain't looking good man I don't see him out here buddy and I like turn to say something to him and I see the and I could see the deer's ass like like 10 feet behind him. I'm like the frickin' deer is right behind you he was like huh he was like oh yeah found it you know like uh yeah no and that's when I was like I was like oh thank god but then I noticed he um when he hit the wall he he busted off one of his brow tines but uh you know it was it was bittersweet man I mean you know big shout out to the landowners on you know letting you go let me go retrieve it and you know I've I've no Jay um Jay actually done the same for them in the past and like that's how it should be you should you should always have that cord with people you know and that that respect for people as long you know they shop the deer and you know it crossed over property lines I know there's some people that like won't let you go they want to know how big it is they will oh nope nope you know we'll we'll go but uh you know most of the people around there it's always like no problem like we'll never tell you no yeah you know and James the same way that that's how it should be but uh that's another reason why I didn't call you Mike because by the time I got done all that I was like shit I forgot to send the pictures so I send the pictures and then all of a sudden Mike why didn't you call I was like dude I was just I was like you're not gonna believe me I think I was I was driving home I think from hunting yeah he's like but uh yeah no it was it was good man but uh you know I now have this with with you and Zach um Zach calls me every like this morning I'm sit just laying in bed like you know what didn't have to go to work you know everyone every like all my all the hockey kids were sick Bianca was sick so I've been trying to take it easy I was just laying there and then my phone goes off I'm like Zach shot something the other day I'm at practice my my watch goes off Zach calling me I go to my coach up my buddy just killed something like it's two people that just like you and hit and him damn squatch when were when am I gonna get on that list but I can't say anything like I suck at like calling people like I usually text the I usually text the guys like like hey like you know so I can get everybody like Bianca's on my call list obviously American Mike's on my call list um I think Justin this year was on my call list it's weird like I I it's such an easy thing to forget about you know what I mean it's it's like a it's like an easy thing to for to forget about um I would love to have more people on my call but I'll be sitting in this in the stand I always you guys are always the first text message the group message I usually text you guys before I people because like it's silent I don't have to you know what I mean the big buck down was I called Bianca then texted you guys then made like another phone call because I need help dragon too if I know you're you're I you know I mean and don't get me wrong frank owes me some stuff Peyton I still gotta wait to cash in on Peyton um you know so that there are some guys that when the right time comes a knocking I'm saving it mostly for bear season when I shoot a step I'm waiting I'm waiting you you just say it I'm coming I owe you a couple so well you know it's like it's so hard because like you know you're you're caught up in the moment when you when you kill something up and you know maybe you gotta go track or whatever like you know that that happened to me with that eight pointer I called Frank and I was like yo I got him he's like oh shit you shot him I said yeah I gotta go find him now it's starting to rain I didn't find him until the next day but you know it you could you could sit there and play and then it's like or like say you got a bad hit and now you got 13 opinions yeah because you just reached out to everybody that wanted you to call them and it's like you go ah shit you know I shouldn't have did that so you know I believe like but anyway if I kill something I'm right on the group chat you know as soon as I can I got I know I got it or everything's lined up the next immediate thing is to get on the group chat and let you guys know you know I'll I'll let you guys know when I shoot something and stuff but you know it's it's to me it's just like you know it's just frustrating sometimes it's like you got to concentrate on the moment and it's like you're trying to play phone tag with people and you know it's like all right you know but yeah I mean I I can reach out you know it's not a problem but you know you you're not gonna want me calling you like you know 3 30 in the morning when I shot a coyote up in the back and be like Mike Mike I shot a coyote go to fucking sleep the fuck you squatch don't call me no more you told me to call you um I I think for for me and I I was blessed this year I got to watch three deer fall right in right in front of me you know I mean my Joe my buck and then I shot the one with the 30 odd six and um you know and then I was pretty confident with the opening day though or opening weekends though that she ain't go far I heard her crash and it it is like you're a hundred percent right like there's a when you're not certain yeah and doubt starts to creep in yeah yeah it's like uh you know but I do have a few people like Frank's usually the guy that I'm like uh doubt you know it's usually the guys and then really outside like and yet again I like to to hear different people's uh opinions and and everything like that um but I I it is it is a tough thing to do too because then you have just too many like you like you said um you know so you gotta find the balance um and what works for for you but I mean where the boys are on a roll I will say no I mean but absolute killers this you know the last couple years but this year it's I think even more impressive than than last year. No it's good man that's why even me I I try to keep you know even like if if I get one or I shoot one like you know it's always you know like my wife you guys and then Jay I try to keep it to that that little tight knit you know thing first and then I'll let you know everybody else know but you know I'm usually I'm usually calling the wife saying bring my son over we got a tracker we gotta take pictures you know like but uh you know it's it it's all bittersweet man I've I've been blessed I had a it started off rough but I accomplished all my goals this year man that I wanted to do and I was very fortunate and I do have one more goal um coming up for the muzzle season I'm gonna take my son out he just turned five on his very first sit with me I'm gonna go put out some I'm gonna go uh put out some bait and we're gonna set up a ground blind and we're gonna go shoot our first dough together so I'm pumped for that yeah that's good so I'm gonna I'm gonna get bring the little heater in there and uh you know hopefully we can get a dough on the ground soon.
SPEAKER_03:Hell yeah looking looking forward to that uh and and hearing about it I mean listen if he gets one he's about to become everybody's good luck charm yeah I don't know but I'm telling you Frank is like a couple years from just being completely replaced from boondogs like once once he's able to to hunt and everything's like who needs Frank that's why I'm trying to hold him up to high standards now for this reason.
SPEAKER_02:He's already a better worker at the events than Frank is than all of us you know he's about to be a better hunter than us you know it's just like and and Uncle Squatch bought him his first bow oh let's go and not like I thought it was going to be like a fake one no he bought him like a legit fucking real legit freaking compound bow I'm like squatch seriously he's like yuck which one was it it's a well i got it on amazon it's it it is a chinese kind of thing but it's a real compound bow it really is I mean it's it's built like it's got the riser it's cams fully adjustable modules on it it came with a friggin' whisker biscuit it's got a three dots uh site i mean it's the real deal dude it'll shoot 260 people yeah yeah it's it's a wicked little bow man and I was like yo I've got a shit ton of arrows that I can cut down and make for you so yeah you had to see me man it was his birthday and I'm like I'm like come here let's see if you can pull this back and I put it down like the lowest setting and he's like I'm like oh no we gotta up that right now he was literally like whoop he like looked at like squats
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, I was like, Oh, he's ready. You got it, let's go get the tar, you know. And his wife goes, Well, Frank, put the target over there in the room. Frank's like, yo, I'll have freaking arrows in my deer tart, my deer mounts in the wall here.
SPEAKER_03:He's like, No, could you imagine? Yeah, I was like, has anyone has anyone seen the video of the guy? He he's like, I shot the biggest buck of my life, and it's this huge buck on TV, and he pulls back. Yeah, it just launches it.
SPEAKER_02:Yep, yeah. I was like, I'm not arrows out of my sheetrock.
SPEAKER_01:That kid's destined to be the freaking like yeah, all killer of all killers. We're I mean, he's gonna be molded by like our freaking craziness, and it's like, yeah, I I'm telling you, man, like eight, nine, ten years old, this kid's gonna be slaying, dude. It's it's it's just a matter of time.
SPEAKER_03:It's a matter of you look at um, you know who's a who's a kid that that has it, and this will kind of be like the last who's a killer, yeah. Pete's uh pizza on City Boy Outdoors. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:He's a slayer.
SPEAKER_03:That boy has been knocking deer down since the minute he couldn't. I think he moved to the to the compound, I think this year too. Um, yeah, you know, that that's a kid that the next generation of of hunters who are raised by crazed hunters. This is what ought they do.
SPEAKER_01:I know I've been supporting him, man. Every time he puts something up, I'm like, good luck, you guys. Come on, man. You know, do it up, get one, get one. I'm so freaking pumped for them when they go out, you know. And then he knows Pete's a good hunter, he really is. He's he's he knows his shit. And Hunter is following right in his footsteps, and it's just awesome to see that, man. And you know, you'll see him like he was up in his stand and they had a doe come through, and he was like, Okay, okay, and he's like walking him through it, and I'm walking him through it too.
