A very special year end countown of our favorite shows of the year that if YOU AINT WATCHIN...YOU'RE BUGGIN!

SPEAKER_01

This week on We Need to Talk, if you're not watching, you're bugging. It's the countdown of the year. I love this episode. Happy New Year. Cheers. Cheers.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, look at that beautiful place.

SPEAKER_01

I made it. I'm having some sparkling in honor of our new year.

SPEAKER_00

Happy New Year to you.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you. And to you, my friends.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you.

SPEAKER_01

So wow, I want to say something. This was not easy to come up with our top five this year.

SPEAKER_00

The world wants our top five. The world wants everybody's clamoring for some suggestions to get through the rest of the holiday week. Catch up before all the award seasons. And also it doesn't even matter. Everybody wants to know what our top five of the year are.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because January we have a lot of things coming back. But 2025, surprisingly, it's been such a shit year, but it's been a great year for TV.

SPEAKER_00

What I usually do is I go through all of our notebooks and I list all the shows that I thought were amazing.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

And then I have to whittle them down to five. Now I had 37 shows, but the first thing I did was I took out anything that wasn't new this year. So if it was the Gilded Age, it doesn't count. If it's the bear, it doesn't count. So I did that.

SPEAKER_01

Now we've been doing that for the past few years because, for example, I know if you listen to us, you know that we love Landman. Yeah. But we are not including it on our list, and we love the Gilded Age because for the past few years we've decided that had to be a new show.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_01

Now, maybe we change it over time, but right now, this is what we're going with. So even as obsessed as I am, and I am obsessed with the summer I turn pretty, it cannot be on the show.

SPEAKER_00

Cannot count.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. But I'm obsessed.

SPEAKER_00

Right. But the whole point of this list is to say to you or to people who you all know that need a show to watch, everybody knows about the bear. Everybody knows about Lamb. But this is the top five new shows of the year or shows we've discovered for the year that we feel are worth your time and energy during this bingeable time.

SPEAKER_01

And hopefully the people that are listening to this are loyal listeners, so they know these are our shows. But please share this episode with other people who may not be listening to us, but should be. Exactly. And everybody that you all know should be listening. You're all bugging if you're not listening to us. Make it your 2026 resolution out there. It's my resolution to double our downloads. It's so resolution. Let's do it. Help us. It's my resolution to be more like 50 Cent. And if you don't listen to us, watch out.

SPEAKER_00

It's not even just about listening, it's listening and sharing. Yeah, sharing is caring. All right. So you want to go first. Okay, sure. And we by the way, no order. It's just my top five.

SPEAKER_01

This is no order. We're not counting down which one's number one or which one's number five. It's just top five you need to be watching. Correct. You need to be watching it. A lot of times it overlaps, so we'll see what happens.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Some of these are one and done, some of these are continuing series, but for the most part, obviously new in 2025. So my first pick of the year is Dying for Sex with Michelle Williams. It's on Hulu. It's eight episodes. She's nominated for an amazing performance. She's a woman who is dying and decides to explore her sexuality. And it's just a type of show I've never seen before and an amazing performance. Definitely worth your time. Only eight episodes. I just think it was amazing.

SPEAKER_01

Also on my list, the performances by Jenny Slate, Michelle Williams were unreal. And I it's heavy. I'm not saying it's not heavy, but it's beautiful at the same time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And it's a true story. She's a unreal. So please, if you have not watched Dying for Sex, it is both of our recommendations for your next spingeable show.

SPEAKER_00

And just people want to quickly say Kay and I have not discussed our picks. I love when we match.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we have not. That's part of the rules. I will go with my next pick because Dying for Sex was also my pick. I'm gonna go with the pit on HBO. This is Noah Wiley show, Catherine Lanasa. And we've been talking about this. I know listeners, you've heard us say it, but this show is so good and so well written and so real. And you feel like you're with these people and the performances are amazing. They're also nominated, they've also won some Emmys. Well deserved. The pit is renewed and out for season two in January, so it cannot be on our list next year. Right.

SPEAKER_00

So you can catch up on it right now.

SPEAKER_01

But you can catch up right now before they release season two.

SPEAKER_00

Right. It's on HBO and Hulu. It's 15 episodes. It's also on my list. It is the story of an emergency room in Pittsburgh. It's one shift. So it's a 15-hour shift. Each episode is an hour into the shift. The way they film this is incredible. Some people say, oh, another medical show. I would argue and say this medical show is different.

SPEAKER_01

Agree.

SPEAKER_00

And Noah Wiley, fantastic character, compelling character. There's a lot of newcomers that you've never seen before. All stellar performances. And uh yeah, on my list as well. So we are matching two for two. I don't think we'll be matching the rest of the three, but I feel like those two definitely. I'm surprised, but happy that we match.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you don't know. You don't know. I think we could be matching. What's your next pick?

SPEAKER_00

Mobland. So Mobland is on Paramount, 10 episodes. Pierce Brosnan, Tom Hardy, Helen Miren about a mob family. And Helen Mirin is one of the most badass characters I've seen in a long time. I thought the writing, the storytelling, the performances all great. I don't know. There's something about this Tom Hardy that I'm obsessed with. And Helen Mirin. Those two performances are just insane. And of course, I love anything mob-oriented. I love violence and killing and stuff like that. So I do really, really like it. Happy New Year, everybody. Happy New Year. And it is renewed and coming back.

SPEAKER_01

So it's also my pick. Three for three. Three or three for three. I think Mobland is my pick because of Helen and Pierce. I think they are unbelievable. I think they got snubbed for the Golden Globes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the Golden Globe people are idiots.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if they continue. Like, I'm not sure season two is going to be as good as season one, to be honest with you. We may be talking during our regular show about how it had a sophomore slump, but it is a great show. It is worth a watch. It is on paramount. It is it's fast. It's exciting. You're on the edge of your seat.

SPEAKER_00

And you have to watch it with subtitles, people.

SPEAKER_01

And the performances are great. So Mobland, yes, Helen Mirren, fucking amazing.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, amazing. Okay. So we're three for three. Let's see what your number four is.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. So my number four is Task on DL. You know, if you've been listening to us and me especially, that I really loved Task. I love Mark Ruffalo. I love Tom Pelfrey. It follows a story about kind of like a washed-up, widowed man who's in a task force. He leads this task force.

SPEAKER_00

The FBI.

SPEAKER_01

Tom Pelfrey is the villain in this story, but the cutest villain I've ever seen. Yeah. And I just loved it. I am set that it's coming back because I kind of wanted it just to end like that. I don't want to be like those other series where you just follow a different story now and different characters come in and out. Yo, although Mark will say, you know, different characters will come in and out. So I'm not excited about season two, but I really, really loved this season. And when I was doing my top five, and I'll get to this at the end, I felt like there was a lot of things that were canceling each other out.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that was my issue.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and this had to rise to the top for me. So Task is on HBO. Please tune in. It is renewed for season two. I don't know how that's gonna go. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So Task did not make my top five, but it was definitely on the bubble. It was definitely part of the decision-making process. It's exactly what you said. There's a lot of shows similar to Task this season that were equally amazing. And I just felt like Task is great and the performances are great, story's great, but it wasn't so unique. It wasn't so different. So I didn't put it on the list, but it definitely could have made my list. So I'm aligned with you. Okay, so my next pick is Paradise. That's on Hulu, eight episodes, Sterling K. Brown, James Martinson. And the reason I chose it is because it was definitely a different kind of a show. And there were a lot of twists and turns. And I was happy to see that this one is coming back because this is a series. This is not a one and done kind of thing. And it's the story of this president, James Martins, that gets killed, and it's a who-done it, but in a really twisted way, and there's way more to it. And I don't want to give anything away because if anybody has not seen the show, there's one really big thing that I don't want to talk about.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, again, I agree. We were so skeptical when we first started that show, and then it sucked us in. I still think that show went one episode too long. Agree. Definitely.

SPEAKER_00

It should have ended one or two. It was a little too long.

SPEAKER_01

But you know I love him, and you know I'm excited to see where it goes in season two. Didn't put it on my top five, but easily could have been. And I recommend it's coming back, so I recommend people, if you have not, please binge Paradise. What's Paradise on again? I forget. It's on Hulu. Hulu, Hulu, Hulu. Yes. All right. Was that your fourth? Now I'm about to give my fifth. Yep. All right. So I have a few things to say, but I'll I'll wait until the end. But there's two shows right now that I was deciding upon, like to put as my fifth. One deserves the fifth spot. The other maybe doesn't, but I feel like the one that deserves a fifth spot's already been out there and is getting recognized. So I'm gonna put your friends and neighbors. Oh, interesting pick. As my fifth. The other one I was talking about is adolescence. We'll get back to that after. But Your Friends and Neighbors is on Apple. It has John Hamm, Olivia, Munn, Amanda Pete. It's in my list that I whittled down. Again, these people aren't winning awards, but it's just so entertaining and it's a crazy storyline, and you love the people. And I don't think it got enough attention. And I don't think enough people watched it. So I'm gonna say that. I mean, look, I love John Hamm, but I also love Olivia Munn and Amanda Pete. So it is gonna come back, and I don't know how that's gonna look either, but it was an enjoyable first season. So your friends and neighbors is on Apple, and that is my fifth pick.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, how many episodes is that? Eight? Eight. Okay, cool. So you just mentioned it, but my number five is Adolescence. Yeah. Really, really, really heavy show, people. Yep. Adolescence is on Netflix. There's only four episodes, but it is all shot in one take. Yes. So for just the technical aspect alone, it has to be on the top five because when you're aware of the fact that it's all shot in one take, it really elevates what they've been able to accomplish. This Stephen Graham guy who helped write it, directed it, and produced it, and this kid Owen Cooper Owen Cooper. He's he's amazing. Never had a role before. First job ever, and an incredible performance about a kid who may or may not have murdered somebody. That's all I want to say because if you haven't watched it, I don't want to give anything away. But you just have to watch it knowing that this was all shot in one take and this kid, it's his first job. And then you're blown away.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I agree. And it was recognized that the Emmys, it's nominated again for the Golden Globes. It's a great, great mini-series. I felt like it was a mini-series, but yeah, it's a one and done.

SPEAKER_00

It's not coming back.

SPEAKER_01

It's a one and done. I do want to say this in my thought process, there was a lot of shows, but I felt like you know, when a show only murders in the building, they all always get nominated, right? Right? And then it cancels each other out. Correct. Right? So I felt like all her fault, Black Rabbit, Beast in Me, Girlfriend, it's all the fucking same show. Now, are these good shows? Yes. They're all in my top 37. Are those shows I would say to stream? Yeah. Of course. If you're listening to us, you know we liked all of these shows. But when we're doing our top five, like an award show, to me, they canceled each other out.

SPEAKER_00

Totally agree. So what I did is I have my 37, then I cancel out what's back. So it has to be first. But the ones you're saying all have dots against them. So The Girlfriend, Black Rabbit, Task, All Her Fault, Dope Thief, The Beast in Me. There's so many good shows. Also, I could have, but I didn't. The Taylor Docuseries didn't include it. I loved Ripple, didn't include it. Diplomat is back, you know, so it can't count. But there's tons of these shows that were stellar shows, Day of the Jackal. Amazing. But they're all the same show. I agree with you. That's why they cancel each other out. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I think that Tass could be put in that category, but for me, Tass just rose to the top. I love Department Q. These are all great shows and great recommendations. So if you have not watched any of them, please do. But we had to limit it to our five, and we have announced our five.

SPEAKER_00

And if anybody wants a copy of our top 37, top 10, top anything, we're happy to post those on our Instagram throughout the weeks ahead. If you need some ideas of what to binge, we have plenty of ideas. There's so much to catch up on if you haven't seen a lot of these shows. Now's the time.

SPEAKER_01

Now is the time because a lot of our top five are renewed, coming back. So now is the time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So I can't wait to see what 2026 has in store for us. I hope it's a I hope that 2026 shows are as amazing as this list of 2025s. I can't believe this is the end of season six. We're going into our lucky season seven. And maybe season seven will be the season that puts us on the map and we could retire from our jobs and we can just do this full time and talk to each other all the time. I'm going to hold up my champagne.

SPEAKER_01

I'm going to hold up my champagne. I want to thank our listeners for another great year. I mean, this one was great. Our Instagram followers have grown. Everyone's interacting with each other, and I love it. So more to come, season seven.

SPEAKER_00

Season seven. I can't wait. And I just want to say also one quick last thing is that obviously Kay and I have a rough year, and you guys have all been so supportive and so helpful and kind of given us a reason to wake up on Sundays. So we appreciate you all coming back and being there for us as well. So have a great end of the year, and we'll be back in a couple weeks. Love you all and happy new year. Share the love. Love you. Yeah, the love. Please share the love. We want to be doing this all the time.
