SPEAKER_01

Hello again, everyone. It is time for another episode of the Community Connection Show. The show that brings you positive stories and encouraging news as we interview top leaders in every sector of the community. And now, here is your host, national speaker and best-selling author, Ryan Stars.

SPEAKER_00

Hello again, everybody, and welcome to another community connections with Ryan Stowers. I'm super excited today to have my friend Raymond Little, co-founder and VP of Perimeter Roofing. And I love the shirt. Nobody cares work harder. We were just talking about that before we went on air. Raymond, welcome to the show. So that shirt that shirt kind of embody embodies your uh your thought process, doesn't it?

SPEAKER_02

Uh yeah, I mean a little bit, man. This uh, you know, put your head down, go to work every day, you know, have goals, and uh the results will follow, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. And and you've got a you know, your your story, you know, we've gotten to know each other and and we've done business together, but you co-founded um uh perimeter roofing. But so tell us just tell us a little bit of your audience to say, you know, we we don't even know who Raymond Little is. Let's assume who the few that don't. Just tell them a little bit about your background and life's not all guns and roses and trophies, you know, and and and what you want to share.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, no worries. Um, yeah, I got sober uh a little over 12 years ago. Um shortly after that, you know. Um I did, you know, moving jobs and worked from a big moving company, worked my way up to the ladder there, um, washed boats, um, you know, rode my bike, you know, to wash boats uh at the beginning. Um, then worked at an automotive uh accessory place, uh sweeping the floors, doing whatever, just filling in the spots that need to be filled in there. Uh, then got with uh uh Justin Simpson and Todd uh at True Tech Roofing, um, you know, from basically, you know, cleaning bathrooms and sweeping floors over there, started knocking doors um over there as a canvaser, a lead setter, worked my way through over there. Um, obviously, you know, Justin went to Florida. Me and Todd then co-founded uh you know Primitive Roofing, uh joined up joined up with Lance, our other business partner, and uh pretty much like a rocket from there.

SPEAKER_00

A rocket ship indeed. Um, it's been a wonderful partnership I've had with you guys and you know, I and and you know, with Todd and Lance but and you. But I was just asking you a question. You know, you've you've done all this growth and done whatever. And what I what a lot of our you know, we introduce the show's about community leaders, Raymond, and what I see a lot of younger people saying, you know, they say, Well, you know, well, I'm I'm successful now. I bet Raymond never climbs on a roof. Well, what do we just talk about? What you what do you say? You're willing to do what? Whatever.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah. I mean, I I still do repairs, I still, you know, I'll change a pipe boot, I'll do an attempt to repair to show insurance company it's not repairable, and I'll send in a meeting, you know, about a nine-figure transaction. Uh I I I think the misconception of uh you you know, I I I feel like the saying don't work in the business, work on the business. I think that's when the owners and and founders start to get lazy, and that's their cop out to their excuse. I I feel like you can work in your business and on the business and never lose, you know, never lose anything, no part of the focus of the drive. I I think that's when we get complacent, is that's when that saying uh comes forward, you know.

SPEAKER_00

So you know what? I think I'm gonna borrow that. Um I I I personally with my businesses, I work on them and I work in them, meaning that my marketing person is out right now. So when we got to get these shows up, guess who it falls on? Me. But you know, am I am I am I afraid to do the work to do it even though I don't want to do it? It doesn't make any difference. It's gotta get done. And uh so you know that that's just uh I think that's an important lesson of um you can be in the boardroom and you can be on the field and be doing both worlds.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think that keeps you in I think it just keeps you current with the industry. Uh I've seen a lot of other roofing companies, and I'm just speaking for roofing because I'm not been in a lot of other industries. I think a lot of the owners, they they were great salespeople, and then they venture off from the company that they're at and they start to want to, you know, start their own company, and they think it's gonna be easier and they they think they're gonna go to the office, but those people don't last. I think it's 2024, we can't run our businesses like we did in the 80s and the 90s and the 70s and even the early 2000s. I think post-COVID it's the the drive is a little different. I think where everything's at in the world today, you better be more diversified and work a little harder to make it, man.

SPEAKER_00

100%. So tell me about the early days. I mean, you know, I met you guys in the first couple years of perimeter roofing, but I mean, the rocket ship story is just I mean, you know, it just kind of all came together, but I'm gonna assume I don't want to put words in your mouth, there was a lot of hard work in the beginning.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, I worked the first, you know, three and a half years, I worked seven days a week. Um, you know, my son grew up in the truck, um, you know, on the weekends I had him, you know, waiting for adjusters, uh, you know, running canvassing teams on the weekends after storms. Uh, you know, I I lived on the road last year. Um, even, you know, as as of last year, I probably stayed on the road 14 weeks or maybe 12 or 14 weeks, you know, uh during the acquisitions. Um, you know, just just doing it from the ground up. Like I said, running canvassers, knocking doors, climbing roofs. I mean, from the grit, you know, just uh, you know, you gotta show up and make it happen. There's no, there's no there's no excuses for not making it happen. I never could call home and tell my business partners, hey, I'm up here in Astral, I can't make it happen, or I'm up here in Raleigh, I can't make it happen and come home, you know. That's I'm not wired that way. So, you know, we get we gotta make it happen.

SPEAKER_00

And I think I got a few years on you, but you know, you're not we're probably four or five years apart. But I'm gonna tell you, you know, the travel people, you know, when I'd go speak and whatever, sounds all glorious and whatever, but there's a lot of you know, logistical getting across the United States and sleeping in different beds and whatever. It's it's it's a lot of hard work behind the scenes. And but but if you're willing to do whatever it takes and say, I'm not gonna make the excuse, I'll do whatever it takes to get there. That's what I want you know, younger generations who are watching the show to see because there's not some silver bullet in all this. Um now I do think it like you and I talk about how you treat people and all that's imperative. And in perimeter, it's built that culture from day one. I've seen it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, there's no over here. I mean, we we you know, we don't hire everybody. We don't we don't choose, well, you know, we're 1099-based company, but we don't we choose to not use everybody's services. If you don't fit our culture, you're probably it's probably not gonna be it's we're we're just gonna go ahead and end it there. I mean, we're we're more driven, you know, we're more driven individuals. Um we we do care about you know our health, our family, you know, our fitness, our our drive. Very little people even drink alcohol over here. Um, there's no partying on the weekends. There's no, you know, it's very we live with intent, we sell with intent, we cheat, we, you know, our careers with intent, uh 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

SPEAKER_00

I see it. You know, and and um I you know, I I did for you know, I won't bore you with the details because what I ended up getting my doctorate, but it was in leadership. And there was a reason. I wanted to empower the people who did fit graduate school or whatever in real world. I mean, the only way to get in that club was a club. I I'm I'm a sales and marketing guy at heart. I hated that. I mean, they hated me. I mean, they they just I didn't think that fit the box. But when I can go and tell people, this is what it means for you. If you want to go to school, here's what it means in the real world. And they're like, oh my God, we we'd never understood just reading a book. I'm like, well, the real world's what it's all about. So when people ask me why I chose to do that and grind through that, I would never wish it upon my worst enemy if I knew what I know, knew then. But I share that with you to say what I saw in perimeter, because I studied organizational culture and have seen it and consulted in it. Yeah, you you guys brought some of the greatest people together, and it looked just from the outside looking in and what I know of just people blood, sweat, and tears bleeding out perimeter roofing. And that is just hard to find and do.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, it over here we all work together, nobody works works for nobody. You know, the it's it's you know, there's no, you know, the the whole mentality is we're all in this together. And that's a true statement. The pay grade's the same way. Um, it's we're we're, you know, a community and a company. Um, so you know, like no no man or woman left behind, you know, mentality. I've never had nobody get evicted from their house over here. I've never had nobody go through bankruptcy over here. I've never had nobody lose a truck or or anything over here. Like I said, we all when it's time to come together and get somebody through a an obstacle or objective they're coming through in life. I mean, we we rally together. Um, most people over here make six figures, most people over here are pretty healthy, pretty successful. So I I think that the same team would be, you know, successful selling anything. Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

I mean just well, I was gonna say, I remember is it Shannon on your team when he went through a personal bout? I mean, I remember that the rally around it was amazing.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Shannon beat um stage four um cancer, yeah. And he's he's you know, he's a professional athlete, you know, before roofing, yeah. He played for the Red Sox in 2015.

SPEAKER_00

I didn't know that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. So his drive's a little different. Um, you know, Shannon's been, you know, in the field with me since day one. We worked every day together in the field. Uh he was actually just beeping in a minute ago. If you've seen a glitch on my screen, um so uh I mean he leads from the front, he leads by example. He only missed like I think maybe five days the whole time he had stage four lymphoma. Yeah. Um he climbed bags with cloud, he climbed roofs with closing bags. He uh, you know, he's did everything, uh, but he leads from the front. So it's uh it's it's a little different. Um, you know, over here. And like I said, when you got somebody that's out working you with stage four cancer, it it raises the bar a little higher.

SPEAKER_00

You don't you don't have to say much to uh everybody to up their game a little bit, right?

SPEAKER_02

No laying out, you know, with a runny nose when say when Shannon's out here, he's green from chemo and not uh not one hair on his body, and he's still still trying to seep his roof on the schedule.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's amazing. I remember that, and remember uh that that was just amazing. And then perimeter cares, you know. Uh and I and I know y'all do another, I can't remember the where you put the beds together for people, but those have been great outreaches, you know, from the community stuff we've covered with you guys doing it. I once the I can't remember. Well, you know the one y'all do the beds, and then the one was uh Yeah, sleep in heavenly peace.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's still in the back of our warehouse right now. Um, yeah, that that's actually started through Keller Williams Red Day. I went over there on a Saturday and uh was a part of that and brought a couple team members. Um they had invited me, and I invited a couple of my team members over there, and everybody's just blown away with it. So we just kind of adopted it and uh been part of it, you know, since day one. Um, yeah, that and the the paying back the school lunches. I mean, if you're gonna roof in your community, you need to support your community as much as possible. You know what I mean? Like it's a it's a it comes hand in hand, you know.

SPEAKER_00

And you know, with the stuff I do with the community family magazine, it's you know, like remind me next time uh y'all do something with that betting, we need to do a story on that. I don't want to forget. I'm saying it on the air, it has nothing to do with this interview, but that's so important, man. And you know, and and and you know, y'all do though I've seen from day one, it's not just hey, how much money can we make? It's like how can we invest in anything and everybody internally and externally to make a difference and an impact in life? Is that fair to say?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, you know, like I said, uh you're you're doing well, you got to give it to keep it. It's just like recovery, right? If you're in recovery and you're you're kind of sharing your story with other people, even if you're not doing it on social media or on an on a stage or anything, you still share it as you, you know, you live your life. Uh when you're in the community and you're doing well, you gotta I I believe my philosophy is you gotta you gotta give it to keep it. Um so keep giving back to the community that you're roofing in is kind of the motto that we've you know that we've you know kind of lived by now. Um, you know, the grassroots, our community, our baseball teams, our t-ball teams, our soccer teams, you know, are all you know the ones you gotta give back to. You gotta give, you know, the the poor, the, you know, whoever, whoever the need, you know, in the community that you're roofing in is where you keep your energy, you know.

SPEAKER_00

I love that. And I, you know, I think you used to had a Facebook post the other day I really happened to stumble upon, and I think it was something I'm gonna butcher this, but it was like, you wanted this, you asked for this, so don't whine about or for something like the about you know, you wanted to get to and it's true, isn't it? I don't remember, I'm I'm not saying it how you said it, but it's uh what how how did you write that? Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

When yeah, when you're tired, you're busy, you're overwhelmed. I mean, remember, you know, and it's all work stuff. I mean, remember you beg for this, so don't so don't cry about it now. You know, you if you got appointments seven days a week when you didn't have one appointment, isn't this what you're praying for, what you're begging for? So embrace it.

SPEAKER_00

Amen. You know, no, I I think you'd actually spoke to me because I think I might have been complaining about being too busy, and I'm like, you know what? That was the goal, right? You know, when I say be busy, you know, you know, having a all right. So uh what do you I'm just kind of asking? You know, people, you know, I I see a roofing company start every day, but what's like a misconception? You know, everybody just thinks I guess they just go knock on doors and you know make a hundred thousand dollars a year, and there's I mean, what's a misconception about getting into this industry, you would say?

SPEAKER_02

That is easy. That you know what what the one thing about roofing is is high risk, high reward, right? So everything in roofing is high risk, high reward. If you put the roof on wrong, you can't use the materials over, it's you gotta start over again, right? Right. If if if one leaks and it's on somebody's hardwood floors, you know, it might be six-figure mistake. Um, you know, it it everything, you know, climbing the roof is high risk. Everything in the all all everything in roofing when you're running a business, you is the mistakes are usually six figures. So I everybody just thinks because it's not a licensed uh trade in Georgia. Now there's only 19 licensed companies in Georgia with voluntary license, and we happen to be one of them. And and and one of our actually one of our team members actually sits on the board. Um, Catherine, um, you might know her from Facebook. Um, yeah, share all of her stuff. Um, she actually sits on the board. It's it's actually a hard test to take. Um, you know, it but that's why you see one pop up every you know, every week. I was looking at one earlier that popped up. Um that used to he's worked at four different companies and now he's gonna own one. Um, but uh yeah, it's just not a licensed trade, so the there's no regulation. You you can start one when we get off this podcast, Ryan.

SPEAKER_00

You can yeah, I um I don't think I'm gonna do that because uh I I think if I'm gonna do that, I'm just gonna call it and come work with you guys because uh, you know what? I'd uh I'm more of just uh but you know, I know I I hear you, I hear what you're saying. No, I'd see it all the time. You know, we've got a private inside Facebook group inside our town, and every week there's and I'm always pulling it down because I'm a hundred percent perimeter, but every week it's some new roofing, whatever, and they don't even follow the rules of the group that are you know promotions on Wednesdays, working Wednesdays, but um so all right, I want we got to talk about something fun. I see you you do a lot of biking, right? So is that one of your favorite things to do? Uh, because I see you always racing bikes, I mean um pedal bikes, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I like the endurance stuff, the long distance stuff. I mean, that's the way I'm wired. So if I'm not climbing roofs, I'm I'm racing bikes. Uh my wife is actually a cyclist too, and she she's big into working out and stuff. Um, but that's the way I'm wired, man. I I gotta sign up for something. I gotta it's always um if if I'm not doing some type of long distance endurance sports or training for them or roofing, that they know telling where my life would go. Yeah, um, since today I got sober, I've been running. Um, so I was running until I could afford to to cycle because cycling's kind of expensive hobby. Um, but uh yeah, it's um uh it's endurance sports, man. I was doing Spartan races, have marathons before the the bike end. I think uh, you know, with the addict mentality, it's the same thing. I want to feel the pain. So uh you know, most people you know race five, six, seven times a year, and I might race probably 25 to 30 times a year. Um I get it.

SPEAKER_00

You're you're feeling uh you're feeling a something that could have been a negative with a positive.

SPEAKER_02

Right, 100%. Yeah, I like to deplete my body, I like to challenge myself. Um, it's a great community too, just phenomenal individuals. I always tell people like when they're in recovery, you know, how you go to the 12-step meetings, you know, the AA's and A's. Oh, that I mean my training when I I went to you know 365 AA and NA meetings straight one time, uh, when I first got uh you know sober. And then I replaced that with when once I I didn't want to get buried in those rooms. Um so my my meeting was an hour run, my meeting was an hour bike ride, my meeting was an hour at the gym once I get out of those rooms to continue my recovery. And just if it's not broke, don't fix it. Um so that's what I do. I have you know high goals in cycling and mountain biking, and I have high goals in my career too, and also in my family. So, like I said, there's no idle time 24 hours a day, you know, seven days a week, I live with intent, either with my family goals, uh my cycling goals, or my career goals. So I'm very it's every hour on the day is you know accounted for with something positive.

SPEAKER_00

Um dude, it's awesome. I'm proud of you, man. I mean, it's uh I mean I would just tell you that's a lot of people don't understand how I take, but that's how I I had to I have to have something in front of me to be pushing towards. I just I don't get just sitting still and staring at the wall. I don't understand it. So I know that's my mindset. I'm all I'm all in or nothing. Yeah, I might as well just be asleep because I don't know how to do 50.

SPEAKER_02

Um, I'm ABHD. I have to have two screens going at one time, scrolling on one, talking to my wife, it drives her crazy and doing something else. There's got to be like a TV going, a screen going, work going, something, you know. So I'm I'm just firing off 24 hours a day. Then when I go to sleep, I'm asleep.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's that's what I said. But they're like my wife's like, you got like an on-off switch, either get Ryan 100% or zero percent, you know. But no, I'm the same way, you know. And I when we were growing up, they didn't really talk about it, but I had ADHD too. And I to get through, I I've learned to hyper focus, you know, like if you were doing a race or you know, if I'm gonna go to the gym or whatever, I'd just dial it in and completely focus on that. But for a lot of people out there, you know, I I mean I I don't look at ADHD as an excuse. I've looked at it as something that could be a superpower.

SPEAKER_02

It is a superpower, yeah. And and with all the social media too, with my dyslexia, I miss you know, so much. Really didn't really truly didn't I I came up with the the way to read it at about 20 years old, uh 21 years old the way I read. But with the with the scrolling now and stuff, and and and and I feel like I'm catching up. Right. Not the first 40 years I couldn't read, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Well, it's funny, I told you, Ramon, you know, I didn't even get this doctrine in leadership, but honestly, I went through elementary and high school, and I think subjects like I didn't understand, like science or sweater, I don't think I understood a thing. I mean, I don't literally not sure I learned anything. So I'm maybe on like a fifth grade level, I gotta go back and relearn it. So, you know, I always look at it, people have different areas of where they're they're strong, and I say, shore up those strengths, and then the areas you're weaker, you don't have to be great at them, just work on those a little bit too. So um, so what is uh at this point in your life, what you know, professionally with your family, I know that's so important to you. What what are what are you most thankful for?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I'm thankful for my team, dude. Thankful for my health, right? Without without my health, um, I'm I might be a little bit of a hypochondriac. So if I go down a rabbit hole on it, don't please excuse me. Um I'm thankful for my health at 47 years old to be the ability to climb roofs, to be able to ability to still work out, to be active fathered to my 12-year-old. Um I just think without our health, you know, I mean, I I've done very well. I've been, you know, uh pretty successful financially. Um, you know, and and you know, I I say that none of that matters now, but that's because I already got it. Uh, but our health is our our health is our wealth. Um, you know, with if you're if you're flat broke today and you got your health, you're still the richer than this the richest sick person. Um so there's still an opportunity as long as you have your health. Um so you know, I I hyper focus on you know on my health now because I don't want to lose it. Um I feel like I've checked a lot of the other boxes um in my life, you know, as far as you know, money and you know, material things or whatever. Um yeah, when I when I when I you know fizzle out and retire in the next, I guess, you know, one or two years uh or take a smaller role um is watching my team grow and getting them to the next step so they can see the then the light in the tunnel tunnel too. So that's that's yeah, you're good.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we we we gotta we cut out just a hair bit there. But you're I you what you know you're talking about, you know, another few years of doing whatever, getting your team, uh letting them see the light in the tunnel. And I think one thing you're saying, Ram, and in that is you know, I tell people I'm 51, and and you know, I I was I kind of was dreading my 50th birthday. And my I went to my doctor and he goes, Hey Ryan, you know what the alternative is? Uh just tell people okay, I finally turned 50, and then like, oh yeah, okay, you're 50, big deal. And now I look back and go, where'd the last year and a half go? And so I guess what I'm trying to say is at a certain point, no matter how much money you have, time and your health, we really that's what you can't get more of, right?

SPEAKER_02

Right. That's that's I I think maybe I'm going to my midlife crisis or something at 47.

SPEAKER_00

No, it it starts it starts to happen about there. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I'm so focused. Like I'm on vacation right now. Uh right now, and and on my whole vacation consists of you know, exercise, uh, you know, long bike rides and then time downtime with my family. I mean, I answer my phone the whole time for my team, but uh my my the the the whole vacation is I want to get like 150 miles in, you know, to take care of my health and and and implement healthy habits in my life, you know. And uh so that's what I I don't know, man. Maybe I I got so hyper focused on my health it's it's it's like I'm walking around hyperchondriac nowadays.

SPEAKER_00

Well, you know what? There's there's worse things to be I mean, that's that's uh like I said, like I said, I've I was telling my kids that the other day. I'm like, look, you know, if if I could get four years back, 40, 47 to 51, you you couldn't pay. I don't know what dollar figure I would give to have. So, so, or you know, if you're if we're able to live longer and healthier, there's not a dollar figure you can put on that.

SPEAKER_02

No, that's why I was telling everybody, once you get, like I said, I'm I'm you know, I've I've been uh been been real real real fortunate, you know, um when we work really hard and put my head down, made a lot of sacrifices for the nine years, but now I'm just like, you know, uh uh my only goal now is like, hey, I just want to maintain what I gotta keep my health, you know.

SPEAKER_00

So well, we're coming to the end, man. It's been an amazing interview. Uh, what anything, we have about three minutes left. What anything that I hadn't asked you that you think would be ship forward to share with our audience because you know that it's the video show and then the podcast that uh and then we'll make sure we get all the contact info.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, I mean I I think important, like, you know, since it's going to community and hopefully the younger generation or people younger in their career is if if the average person in the United States lives to 75 years old uh uh or 80 years old, I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

I'm hoping I'm hoping that's 80.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, hoping 80, right? So I I tell everybody, listen, only listen to people you would trade places with and out of that, out of that 80 years, put your head down for 10 in your 30s or 40s, put your head down. Put your head down for yeah, right. Put your head down for 10 years and and and and and get hyper focused and you know, don't listen to everybody about balance. Live without balance for 10 years in your career and see where you're at, then find your balance.

SPEAKER_00

Amen. That's that's spot on. And and and Raymond, just with like the perimeter roofing and you know, the different companies uh affiliated with perimeter roofing, what's the best way? Is it just the website or Instagram or Facebook?
