Snyders Return:

Hello, and welcome to snows return ha we're talking to play podcast. My guest today is elemental force of good and goodwill within the ttrpg community showing us that we are gamers, we are friends, and we are family. The sentiment is for more than just one day. More than a week is a thought process through which we can find support for ourselves and provide support to others. Because we, I You are not a critical failure. As a gilding light rising like a phoenix she brings d&d and beyond to our tables. It is my humble pleasure to welcome any silver medalist roleplayer and Jasper's game day founder, the wonderful team dm Fenway Jones, Fenway, welcome to the show.

Fenway Jones:

Thank you so much. I am so excited to be joining you today.

Snyders Return:

I can't thank you enough for joining me really, before we go into things I've alluded to there in the introduction, would you mind let us know how you got into tabletop role playing games, please?

Fenway Jones:

Sure. So it was about six years ago. And I my dad has been playing d&d and Pathfinder for since he was in high school. And when I turned 11, he finally decided that it was time to get me into the hobby as well, as I've always been a very imaginative and creative person. And so he thought it would click with my personality very well. And obviously, it has. And so through that I met his group of friends that he's played with NES who I started playing Pathfinder with for a while, and then into d&d after

Snyders Return:

that. Wow. Wow. So So that brings us brings us up to speed. Are you still do you still play both sides of the fence and other TT RPGs? Or are you very much on the DND wave of excitement as it is at the moment?

Fenway Jones:

So mostly, I stick with d&d, but every once in a while I will play Pathfinder. I have played star finder, and a couple of other ttrpg is here and they're

Snyders Return:

not brilliant, brilliant. And so you've You are the team dm to be well, I will let you do that the sort of the plug in the promo bits Where can we find you on social media so people listening now when at the anqing can go and find you?

Fenway Jones:

Sure. So on Twitter, like you mentioned, I am Fenway the team dm, and all over social media on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and on a website and Jasper's game via the websites just Jasper's game calm.

Snyders Return:

Alright, they will be links to yourself and justice game day and a few other things. I'm sure they will mention through the through this interviews. As we go. We'll be down in the description below this podcast. Please scroll down. Follow those links and support for me as a content creator Jasper's game day as a charity and everything that the power viewer associated with the entity of justice, Justice gayndah. If someone who's listening to this is like, I've kind of heard of Jacqueline Jasper's game day. And I've you know, I've seen you pop up on streams or on interviews. A few of the shows I'll inquire about because you met some incredible people and you know, some incredible people, which might give you a quick insight into what Jasper's game D is and what it represents, please,

Fenway Jones:

of course. So Jasper's game day we are a nonprofit organisation, a 501 c three charity. And what that means is basically we are a official, tax exempt nonprofit organisation, and we raise money for suicide prevention and awareness through gaming. We started four years ago because I lost a couple of friends to suicide. And I wanted to be able to use the emotions, the pain, the guilt that always comes with a lost suicide to be able to help people in similar situations who were having suicidal ideations, or who had lost a loved one to suicide, and so we created Jasper's game day because Jasper, one of the friends that lost Was my gaming partner in crime? And I wanted to do that, to mix my passions.

Snyders Return:

Absolutely. And just was game day has continued to grow both in sort of exposure and, and support and things. So how is it? How is it felt to have support and sort of collaboration and community built and support you from across the ttrpg community?

Fenway Jones:

Well, I will be honest, it has been quite a wild ride. So originally, when we did our first event, we did it in our local game store. And it was supposed to be a one time thing. It wasn't supposed to go any further. We just wanted to be able to have an event to raise some money. And so once we received the overwhelming amount of support from that one event, and so many people coming back to us and being like, when are you doing your next one? When can we see you again? Like how can we continue to donate? And we were like, We have no idea. So, you know, it's been fantastic, humbling, inspiring to see the communities come together. You know, wizards and piezo, were both involved in her last Jasper's game week, which they're known to be like, the opposite sides of a coin, but they were still able to come together to support an amazing cause. And so it's just very, you know, inspiring to see everybody come together.

Snyders Return:

Yeah, definitely. And you mentioned there, it's gone for me a day, although it's still gas, Jasper's game days, it's gone into a week and there is continued support throughout the year, of course from from yourselves and for many creators who have come in to support the project. So how is it felt having that day develop into a week with the sort of publishers input and the I don't wanna say celebrity endorsement? Because that's the wrong phrasing but but like the heavyweights of of our community that have come in and helped raise the profile, and really help bring a spotlight on to the issues that just was getting the support, and the maybe some of the vulnerable in the community as well.

Fenway Jones:

So originally, the way that we were doing it was Jasper's game day that the day effect was our in person event in Michigan where it started. And Jasper's game week was started the second year when we wanted to do an online event. And it was gonna start off as like a two day thing for Jasper's game week. And so many people wanted to be involved. That we were like, Oh, I guess we can just add on a day. Oh, we've added on four days. Wait. And so, you know, it's been growing, because so many what people want to be involved in, we just don't want to turn down anyone who wants to be involved. And it's, you know, it's just fantastic. I love the difference between justice game day just was game week, we had Jasper's game day online, you know, the different things that people come up with. And then of course, we have our ambassador events throughout the year for Ambassador programme, that also raise money for us.

Snyders Return:

Yeah. So on your website for those who want to support you've got ambassadors and partners and things. So if people are inspired, and I'm sure they write the hours as I am, which is why I've been so keen to speak to you. Since I first heard about you and and everything that just was going to be does. How can they support through these programmes?

Fenway Jones:

Well, we have lots of different ways that they can support. Unfortunately, the deadline for our ambassador project or Ambassador programme applications just passed. But of course, if you want to become an ambassador, please apply next year, we would love to have you and you could be involved in other ways. Until then we have our partnership programme, which is for a lot of larger companies or companies in general, to become partners with us get on our banner shirts, there are a lot of different levels to that as well. As well as we have a Discord. And so anyone who wants to just volunteer, and I say just not in the derogatory sense because all volunteers are very helpful to us and we wouldn't be able to do what we do without them. And who wants to volunteer who want to be a part of the community? We call the Jasper's game the family is our Discord. And so the discord link is on the Jasper's game a Twitter and I believe on the website as well. And so definitely check that out.

Snyders Return:

Yeah, yeah, definitely. There's some amazing creators in the family already and just adding to that pool of supporters. You know, raising the profile, even if, like I've had the privilege of doing of just helping promote on social media and helping support the the hard work that yourself and the others in the community are doing. It's It's such a great community to be a part of. So that's I will come back to Jasper's game day as we sort of cycle through, but with all that sort of going on in the background and taking up a portion of your time, should we say and others who are committed to helping with it. You sort of ventured onto streams and interviews and you've sort of appeared on multiple shows as well. So the gilding light that's sitting Phoenix's project? Yes. What's it been like being involved with with the gilding light, oh, gilding, light, and soutine. And, and the creators on on there, and on the other platforms?

Fenway Jones:

Well, I will always speak highly of soutine, because she is my mentor. And she actually helped create Jaspers. And so she has been there free since the beginning. And she is one of my best friends like gaming community. And so gilding light, along with that they are an amazing community ended up themselves, as well as they have fantastic production. And they are so inclusive and want to make sure that everyone is able to be a part of their community. And so all of their streams have to be pG 13. And there's no eating or anything like that. on stream, in case anyone who is watching or listening has any, you know, auditory, sensory issues, and because, you know, all of the things that come with that, and they're just an amazing community there, and all of the people that I have worked with shows, podcast, interviews, all of that sort of stuff. I haven't run into a bad situation yet. And that says a lot because outside of the gaming community, you oftentimes run into bad situations. And I haven't yet in the gaming community. And that's just very cool to me.

Snyders Return:

Yeah, absolutely. And you mentioned that you've been through other you've been on other podcasts and streams, you've you've had a couple of chats with the d&d beyond team and the dungeon. Dragon talk, we've, I think Greg knows, what's it been like to sort of be included in sort of official air quotes, sort of d&d products in that way, the production team and getting to speak to those those guys, although that team,

Fenway Jones:

well, honestly, it's wild. A couple of years ago, if you had asked me if I had ever would ever be able to do something like that, or something like this, I would have said no, no way ever. And it's just so cool. All of those teams, were fantastic to work with. You know, the DND beyond team is one of our partners, and they do a lot of our production for our main streams, they were part of Jasper's game week. We did an event with them in August to celebrate their four year anniversary. And they're always ready to go whenever you want them to be and are in for whatever. And the DND the DND dragon talk, folks, I've been friends with Greg Tito for a while and he asked me Come on with Gail Simone. Which also was like meeting her was fantastic. She's super cool, super nice. And you know that interview was a dream. Dream come

Snyders Return:

true. But I'm very jealous of both knowing and meeting Greg and getting to know Gail as well. So yeah, very jealous. I'm just gonna say that it's, I just have to live with that unafraid. Congratulations as well for your nomination. I don't know if the results are out. They may have come out by the time this gets released for the game hers awards. You were nominated for that. So congrats. relations? I'm sure that'll be a positive, what it is positive overall, but surely positive for yourself as well.

Fenway Jones:

Yes, it was a very big honour to be nominated. And let alone be even, you know, possibly chosen whenever the results come out. And I just, there are so many great people who are also nominated. And so I'm just looking forward to seeing who, what, and being able to congratulate them or, you know, being a part of

Snyders Return:

it. Yeah, celebrating together, which, however, however, the cookie crumbles, should we say, be able to celebrate this? Hopefully for several years, why not? You can celebrate it for several years to come. But hopefully, events like this will continue and recognition and you know, the the inclusivity that we're, we're seeing really sort of come into the ttrpg space continue to grow and evolve as wider spectrum as possible. So getting involved getting recognition, getting out there and out and about, you've been to Gen Con. what's what's the convention circuit? Like? What's it been like up to now And where's where's next

Fenway Jones:

share? Well, previous to 2020 was very different to how it is now, previous to 2020. There were a lot more people in a lot of smaller spaces. And but right now, there's just less people, bigger spaces. Other than that, you know, we at the conventions, we set up a table, usually in the adventurers League, d&d room, a lot of times we work with beltmann games. And we sell the Al certs, we sell rerolls, we have dice, all of our mirch, those sorts of things out at the table, as well as information and a couple of freebies here and there. And I see it as a way to, you know, get to the people who prefer the convention life rather than online. And don't typically choose to watch streams, which is totally okay, people can absolutely have their preferences to online versus in person or watching the games versus playing them. Totally fine. No judgement at all. But it's definitely a way to reach a different group of people. And I think that's really great.

Snyders Return:

Yeah, definitely. And so Gen Con, a time recording Gen Con has just passed. Where is just going to going to pitch the table next, what's the next con on the horizon? at time of recording

Fenway Jones:

at time of recording? origins? So that's going to be the the next con that we're going to, and then in October after timer, felice will be at gamehole con. Oh,

Snyders Return:

well, we'll be sure to promote and point people in your direction as I'm sure you guys will as well. You mentioned there, setting up a table in the Al section, your Twitter handle is the team dm. So from a personal perspective, where do you prefer to be? Do you like to be behind the screen running the show? Giving the the sort of the plot hooks and the storylines? Would you like to be immersed on the other side of the screen soaking your all in? Where's your visual current preference?

Fenway Jones:

Well, on line, I certainly prefer to dm because online there are a lot of opportunities for distractions, and I personally am a very distractible person. I will put that out there one of my faults, that's totally okay. But dming, I find myself immersed, and I love the idea of immersing other people. And then in person, I also love dming. But I do love playing when I get the chance as well. And of course else playing online too. It's just a little bit more of effort for me to focus on that part.

Snyders Return:

None of that is fair enough. We all have our little foibles shall we say, when it comes to things like that, so absolutely. And you mentioned there sort of enjoying running and enjoying playing depending on location and preferences and things like that with releases as they are coming out for things like d&d, or Pathfinder or other TT RPGs that may have caught your eye. What was your most inspired at the moment which are there any particular types of games you're looking to run or playing? Or are there particular releases you're excited for that are coming up or just come out?

Fenway Jones:

And what are the one that just came out for d&d, is definitely something that is very I'm very excited about that one. I can't remember the exact name of it. But I am the cover for the book, the ultimate cover for the book is so pretty, and I'm so excited for that one. Oh, the wild beyond the witch light is what the newest book for d&d is called, that's the one that I'm really, really excited for. It's all about the feywild.

Snyders Return:

Is that something you would like to dm and use the fi in a strange and I'm just gonna say weird or warped way, but in the way that only the fee can be portrayed? I think that's a fair description because people can use and manipulate the content as they choose? Or would you want to be immersed? Would you want to see how a dungeon master could play with expectations shift the passage of time maybe or locations and things? What is it about this release? That has you sort of personally inspired?

Fenway Jones:

Well, I incorporate the fate into a lot of my Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, whether it's just a hint of it here or there, or there are fake creatures all around. And so I really am excited about learning more about the feywild. And more about the creatures there the habitat, you know, the habit of the feywild. All of that is just super interesting to me intriguing.

Snyders Return:

Yeah, definitely. And, you know, with that, but intriguing into the fee and things like that. Is there another want to put you on the spot? if, if, if you're uncomfortable to answer this, but the whole plethora, a smorgasbord of TT RPGs out there? Is there any that you thought or I like the way that sounds or use in other people play that maybe has piqued your interest, it could be on a fee theme or it could just be a different ttrpg from the two mainstays we've mentioned already?

Fenway Jones:

Well, ones that I really, really want to try out. And actually, you can't see it, because it's a podcast, but I'm wearing a sweatshirt for it right now is the cortex system. Specifically tales of Zedillo, I've seen it played. And I'm also friends with the creators of it. And it is just a, you know, intriguing system, and very different from the systems that I've played. And I just, I would love to be able to experience that for myself. Also, it sounds, I feel like this sounds a little bit generic. But I also know a lot of people who play Vampire the Masquerade. And I'd love to be able to give that a try. Yeah,

Snyders Return:

two great systems, great games. We were lucky enough to try the tails Azalea they released the preview, sort of adventure A while back, we were able to give that a try. So I recommend if you're able to find a table, and I might have to invite you to ours. But if you can find a table definitely give that a go. And the vampire games, the storytellers that I've seen and I've heard of and that I've had the privilege to sort of get to know, make it sound so, so amazing, so dark and immersive. And yet, so inclusive and and respectful. So I'm on that I'm on that boat somewhere, too. I want to be playing that at some point. So yeah, no, great systems. Obviously. There's only so much time that we get from day to day, week to week, month to month to squeeze these in. So on that theme and and again, you don't have to watch this if you don't feel comfortable to but outside of commitments to Jasper's commitments to streams commitments to your other pod podcast interviews and other sorts of ttrpg commitments. Do you get any spare time do you get downtime? What is it you do out away from the virtual or physical gaming tables?

Fenway Jones:

Well, I mean, this doesn't, I guess count as downtime, but it is fun. I do work at Starbucks as well. So I'm a barista at Starbucks. As well as I do get quite a I do get some downtime, playing with my brothers hanging out. I really love reading and writing. I'm in the process right now of writing some magic items for us a teen Phoenix's Bard, sirens Battle of the Bard book. And so those are super exciting. There's 20 magic items all inspired by bards. And that'll be coming out soon, I think. And yeah A lot of different things that I have a very busy schedule.

Snyders Return:

Yeah, I can I can only imagine 20 magic. I mean, I backed sirens through Kickstarter, very excited to see that come out and luckily, so are you able to hin to one or two of them maybe obviously we don't have to go into for mechanics what one or two of these magic items maybe just a wet the whistle as it were,

Fenway Jones:

I'm one of them, I'll tell you the name of one of them. One of them's going to be called the buskers bowl and it is going to be available in district one. And then there's a couple of other things like anti stage fright beans, or there's a tattoo that gives you advantage and a couple of things there's there's a lot of different Bart you know, things that will help bards but also are designed for if your character isn't a bard, and it'll help those skills but also, you know, give you your own abilities as well.

Snyders Return:

And you mentioned there sort of using having magic items in various places and making them available to both bards because sirens is primarily but not solely based on Bart's great setting, look into that if you haven't been able to back it or pick it up. If you're listening to us wants to be released, please go and pick it up. It's fantastic. Book staging, setting all feature magic items fine from firmly so you know, triple win there somewhere. But with all the flexibility of content that's out at the moment and your experience from both behind the the GM or dm screen, and as a player, have you got any sort of practical advice you would you would share what what's what's your one or two bits of sort of dm advice you would give to, to somebody looking to pick the game up?

Fenway Jones:

Well, I will always and forever preach this. It's Don't let the players at the table. influence how you're running your game. And but what that means is, if they're trying to tell you, they can't do that you can't do it because of your experience, or lack of experience. Don't let that ruin your time. Because me personally, I started dming at 13. So I was a young female dm I had a lot of things going against me at that point in time. And there were a lot of people who didn't like the idea of young female dm. And so would they would tell me, oh, you're RDM. And then you would just see that look on their face. And I was like, well, that's not what I wanted to see. But I'm still going to run a great game. And so just run the game to the best of your ability, no matter what, you know, negative impacts, or negative outside forces.

Snyders Return:

They're brilliant, very inspiring. And I appreciate that. And with the game hers and the recognition that is coming to not just females, but but DMS gms players of of all spectrums. I was just going on a supportive kind of rant there. There was a question for me, and I've lost it. But with all this recognition coming, and the support, rightly coming in, in from various spaces across the community, where are you hoping the community goes next? What What do you want to see next develop through the ttrpg family community? Or space, depending on how you choose to frame it?

Fenway Jones:

Well, I'm not sure. Because right now, I think that there are a lot of places it's currently trying to go. And I think all of them are very important. the LGBTQ community, the people of colour, women, you know, transgender, realise that is part of the LGBTQ, but you know, non binary people, those sorts of things, all of those communities are very important. And I think that, really, we need to stay in these places a little bit longer. I think there's still more work to be done in the support of all of the communities. And I think that if we were to move on right now to something new, it wouldn't be giving the recognition to everything that it deserves.

Snyders Return:

Yeah, definitely. We don't want to sort of move the spotlight prematurely when we have so much support building for these, these communities within the community. To give us that level playing field that too many analogies in one sentence. So But you mentioned, you know, soutine, being your mentor, who else in the ttrpg community doesn't necessarily have to be a particular sort of group of individuals. But where else inspires you? Who else prompts you to push yourself either as a player as a DM or just as a member of the community?

Fenway Jones:

Well, a lot of so a lot of my friends really. So Tanya daypass, Cypher, and critical Bard, they push me to be more mindful of my language. And we're mindful of people around me. And you know, not just me, in general, they push everyone, but they, that's kind of what I get from them. And, you know, I have a lot of like, the soutine. Obviously, there's just a lot of people in the community who pushed me to be better at the new members to the community. I know that sounds weird, but the new members of the community pushed me to want to be better, so that more people can start being involved.

Snyders Return:

So it's harder to lead on to that as the community pushes you to be better. And we hope to sort of promote support others being better and inclusive in in the community. Whether this sounds like a job interview now Where do you see yourself and Jasper's in sort of 510 years, which I'm not saying there's an angle but but where? Where are you wanting to be be ttrpg related? Or off my personal stamp?

Fenway Jones:

Well, for Jasper's obviously, you're gonna get the answer of I want to see us helping more people. But it further than that, I want to see us grow. So right now, we are in the technicality global because people do donate to us from all around the world. And we had an online event in Australia, and like we've had articles written about us in all different in a couple of different places across the world. But I want to see us have more of an impact on communities, in outside of the US and Canada, because we have done some things in Canada as well. So want to see us have more of an impact and see more money, go to help people in need outside of the US and Canada.

Snyders Return:

Because at the moment you support or support and in turn sort of supported by although that's a very weird way of saying it a couple of challenges. Would you mind, just letting people know who they are in case they they feel that? You know they is it is their time to reach out to one of the challenges that that you're involved with, please?

Fenway Jones:

Sure. So there have been a lot of people that we have worked with over the past couple of years. And if they're looking for a more detailed list, and where what has been done with the money at which places we do have a spot on our website where we detail where funds have gone. But most recently, we have donated to the Trevor Project. We have donated to United survivors, which is specifically for programmes and those sorts of things. Trevor Project is LGBTQ teens to suicide prevention. We donated to lone survivors, which is a veteran suicide prevention project, as well as the Acoma project, which is teen young women of colour, and that they support them. And if they're not in a good living situation and help with suicide prevention there. And as, of course, the American Association of Suicidology we have donated quite a bit to them as well.

Snyders Return:

All right, well, again, going through your website, they'll be able to find that and I'll make sure, as I mentioned before, the links to your website, yourself and the other platforms will be done down in the description below this podcast. Which sort of leads on to the slogan sounds, maybe not the right way of phrasing it. But for the merchant dice. You're not a critical failure. Where Where did that? Did that originate back at the start of Jasper's game day, or is that some is that been something that's evolved into becoming something that you put on merchandise for a better description?

Fenway Jones:

So the answer to that as confusing as it is, is both So we started with your non critical failure. And you do not have to roll initiative alone. And we started with those two phrases, Matos. And we had them on business cards that had information about the National Suicide Prevention crisis line, as well as some other information about Jasper's game. And that's where that started. And then we got a lot of support for those phrases, specifically, you're not a critical failure. And so we had someone design a T shirt, like a T shirt design for it. And we put it on our merchandise when we started creating more designs for our merchandise.

Snyders Return:

Yeah, yeah. Again, available through your website, or through just getting the website so again, if you want to support in a different way and can do so then there are t shirts, badges, stickers, I think and a whole selection of items available for you to show your support only for for family Jasper's game day, but also those who who need support at critical times in their life. So no, really good to see. Having sort of we've spoken about charity work yourself gains gains, you're excited for the community. The downtime you get between your time spent with the charity your time spent with your recording commitments and your time for actual work. Other coffee companies are available. Disclaimer don't get sued or something. Doubt Starbucks will come and find me on a podcast app, but it's fine. Is there anything that we haven't touched on that you would like to? I'd like to bring up before we start this interview you mentioned gamehole con, or is there any, any other topics you'd like to touch on before we sort of close out the interview?

Fenway Jones:

Well, I obviously I will point out that if any of you listening are going to be at gamehole con please come say hi, we will have a booth in the vendor Hall, as well as we will have a Jasper's game day get together Thursday night. And I would love to see you sometime during the convention. And other than that, if you're looking for more information on Jasper's game day, more ways to get involved or just have any sorts of questions.
