Hello, and welcome to snows return a tabletop role playing podcast. My guest today can be found all throughout the week as characters on a number of different shows for your audio and visual Dungeons and Dragons fix. Whether that's as part of a sci fi adventure as a paladin in a jeweller dm game, exploring the frozen North with a group of Raiders, or searching for hope and redemption. Katie Downey brings them all to life. Katie, welcome to the show.
Katie Downey:Thank you so much. I'm excited to be here.
Snyders Return:It's an absolute pleasure to have you. Before we go to the projects and the chosen things that you're, you're on and you're part of and have coming up. Would you mind telling us a little bit about yourself and how you got into tabletop role playing games to start with please?
Katie Downey:Sure. I am a avid geek. I got into tabletop RPGs. Back in the 80s. dating myself a little bit here. I started playing second edition dungeons and dragons and branched out from there into a variety of different games. Probably my favourites being changeling, the dreaming and deadlands. I loved both those games. See I LARP, which is live action role playing for those who are unfamiliar with it. I got into that in the 90s. And that sort of replaced tabletop gaming for a while and I came back to tabletop gaming. Last year, actually, I was asked by two different friends if I would be interested in doing a stream. And then the other asked if I'd be interested in doing a podcast and I hadn't played tabletop in a while. And it sounded really cool. So I said, Yeah, sure, why not. And I've fallen in love with it all over again. I am by profession, a commercial building envelope consultant, which means that I look at anything that's on the exterior of the building like walls, windows roof, and do assessments and construction observation and put together construction documents for that. And yeah, that's that's pretty much me in a nutshell.
Snyders Return:That's quite a nutshell to crack open and go through the in it. So we'll start on, you said you got into, into sort of tabletop role playing games from TV and played other games do you still pick up those other games from time to time, you still are able to go on to gaming tables to play some savage worlds or some of the world of darkness or changeling, and or vampire or anything like that.
Katie Downey:I have recently gotten to play vampire again, which I had in years and years and years. So that was that was really fun. It was sort of a nostalgia kick for me. I occasionally get to play masks, which is a game about teenage superheroes that I highly recommend. I think that's my, my favourite non Dungeons and Dragons game at this point. There's a lot of exploration and character development built into that game and that's sort of the meat that I look for when I go to play a game. Hmm,
Snyders Return:that's by magpie games I believe.
Katie Downey:Yes, yes, it is.
Snyders Return:It a fantastic sort of broad spectrum of of games that you've mentioned there and playing yourself and we'll move on to the the podcast and the streams in a second but the LARPing Are you still part of an active lobbying group and would you feel free to give them a shout out if if you are? Oh,
Katie Downey:I am. Yes, and I will happily give them a shout out. The game is called calamity. It is an alternative history lovecraftian LARP it's it's basically weird west where I play a character named Theodora Kane. And she is a thrice widowed thier just which basically means she calls on the powers of the old ones in order to cast spells. It's an absolute blast. If a game it is it's dark at times, and it's just wonderful. The folks who play are an amazing community and they make the game so enjoyable. The staff is actually several of my friends that I've run games with in the past. So I went in knowing the quality I could expect and they've never disappointed the the story is so rich and so detailed. I've had moments at this particular game where I forgot I was at a game because the, the terror of the moment was so real. And I love that I live for that at larps. I played a couple other games I've played for about 25 years. And there's there's something to be said for being out and actually physically fighting because I do boffer larps. So that's padded weapons and armour and wooden shields and all that jazz. And I absolutely love it. It's It's so addictive. It's it's not a spectator sport, it looks really goofy, from the outside. But once you try it, you'll be hooked. It's amazing.
Snyders Return:I can I can hear and almost feel the enthusiasm for it in your voice and the way you you say sell it that's unfair, but the way you you bring it to life, just in your descriptions there of the game and everything else. It sounds like a lot of fun and a great community to be a part of.
Katie Downey:It really is it really is and the creativity in this community is mind blowing with calamity in particular, there is a tavern that gets run, it's run as a saloon like a wild west saloon. They actually built a collapsible player piano. And they built a collapsible bar. So when you walk into, you know this, we use campgrounds that have developed cabins and stuff on them. And when you walk into the tavern, there's just this huge bar with the big mirror behind it. And they have all sorts of bottles and stuff. And it is it's so immersive. And just the engineering that went into it in the creativity and the love that that goes into it blows me away every game, huh?
Snyders Return:Oh, as well as being part of that community. Are you part of the the ever growing and ever expanding tabletop community? There was a name you mentioned there as part of the LARPing. That will we'll touch on a bit later. I don't know if that was an intentional reworking of the character. But we'll come to that in a bit. Would you mind tell us about the you mentioned the early stream and the early podcast sort of expanding on on those and and your your roles are as xalan and Sasha, please?
Katie Downey:Yes, um, I got a call from Dustin Fletcher in 2018, asking me if I would be interested in taking part in a stream that he was putting together. And he explained that they were going to be dual dmws that he and Devin Henderson would be co dming the game and running it simultaneously. And he told me about the the rest of the folks who are going to be involved and asked if I'd be interested. And I hadn't played tabletop in years. I had been exclusively LARPing but it sounded like a lot of fun. And I was like yeah, I kind of want to play tabletop again. So I accepted and that was my introduction to D four, which is as I said a dual dm stream and podcast we do put out the feed in podcast form as well. And I absolutely love this group. I didn't know anybody other than Dustin going in. And we have all become just great friends. We look forward to playing together every week. It's the COVID separation is real with this group on we really miss being around each other because we actually play in person normally. Yeah, we have a studio that we go to that's kitted out with all sorts of props and the walls are carved stone and it's it's absolutely amazing. But that's that's how I got into defore which on that I play a paladin of ogma named Sasha valus Bard. She is an ass Amir and just she's just a delightful character. I love her she is sweetness and hope and optimism wrapped up in a little bow on she has her moments of doubt and dwelling but she always comes back to just really believing that the story is going to be amazing and that everything's going to turn out okay because stories have Happy Endings and then for for stellar Archana the podcast I do. I got a call from Adam Jones who was the DM and and that was also in October of 2018. It was about three days after Dustin got ahold of me. Adam asked if I'd be interested in doing a podcast and I said, Well, that's that's kind of funny. I'm doing a stream now. So sure, why not? And I said, What's, what's the game and he said, Imagine classic Dungeons and Dragons characters, thrust into outer space. And I said, Oh, my God, I'm in it. It's such a great campaign. It's such a unique idea. He does a beautiful job of blending the fifth edition rules into a sci fi setting. He sort of came up with his own system for it and just knocked it out of the park. My character for that one is xhale or Ma, and she is a tritone Tempest cleric slash rogue slash Bard. I believe she's level 16 at this point. That's a high level campaign.
Snyders Return:And it was about
Katie Downey:Yeah, it's a blast. It's so much fun. It made me fall in love with Tempest clerics and an tritons. It's such a fun combo. And she's just, she is living her best life in every aspect she can. She is allegedly a former pirate and has has a very different personality from Sasha. So I love when I get to go on Saturday to record stellar kanem and then go on a Sunday to do defore. It's a nice flip of characters that makes it a lot of fun, huh,
Snyders Return:I can imagine, I can imagine and they're not the only characters that you have. Ongoing and in the works. Would you mind telling us about some of the projects you've got coming up in the future as well, please?
Katie Downey:Sure. Um, we just started two weeks ago. We just started a game on the thread Raider channel for Twitch and this is icewind Dale rhyme with the frost maiden. I am playing a human wizard from the wolf tribe named Mistral, which her name means the northwind She is a very dry and logical follower of divination, I guess would be the best way to put it. She's level one currently, but I'm planning for her to follow the divination school and and specialise in that she's very, very, as I said, very dry but she has a very soft side to her which you get to see with with regards to her sister, and the the wolf that she she acquired recently adult. I love having pets in games. It's one of my favourite things. Sasha has a pet mimic actually named biblio because she found him and he looked like a book and she fell in love with him adult via mistrals wolf she absolutely loves. And I get to play with an amazing group. I actually finally got to play with my friend, Jordan beard, who is wonderful and very talented. So she plays my twin sister on Rime of the frost maiden. And actually Devon Henderson, one of the DMS for D four is also on Rime of the frost maiden. So that's been really fun getting to roleplay with him, outside of him being the one in charge. And let's see, I am actually using Mrs. Theodora Kane as my character for Harper's tale hope and redemption. Harper's tale, for those who are not familiar was the, the love child of, of a, an absolutely beautiful group of people who came together and put together a story that was dreamed up by a young woman named Harper, who was going through treatments for leukaemia, and she and her father came up with this amazing story and they took it to some writers and said, Look, we've got this idea and they sort of ran with it and it it's this beautiful 10 module. game series for fifth edition rules for fifth edition Dungeons and Dragons. And it's, it's, I think the project that's closest to my heart at the moment because the story behind it is so wonderful. I am playing with a mind blowing cast for this one the players in this game are some of my favourite people. The crafting Muse v. Dr. B, and you henio dm jazzy hands, many people will recognise him as and then we've got many terrain domains, Jake, as the DM. And we we had our session zero recently, and everybody just clicked so beautifully. It's it's going to be amazing. I missed playing Theodora so much that I decided to convert her to a tabletop character. And I played her for a four session game that was run by the the crafting muse. And I was asked if I would mind returning as her and for Harper's tale and I said absolutely, I love this character. I'm happy to play her any opportunity. So she's a she's very sassy. And she is very opinionated. And she is a very domineering woman. But if she considers you one of her own, she will burn worlds for you. So she's she's a lot of fun to play.
Snyders Return:But she sounds great and many layers and I was it's, it's great that you're able to sort of transpose transport your, your character from one medium as it were into into another and still bring that life and that texture to the to the role. And as you say that the people you're playing alongside is an amazing
Katie Downey:group. It really is. I I feel so incredibly fortunate that this came together. Jake had just posted on Twitter one day that he would love to run this game for myself and V and stone flike Hi, unfortunately, she's not able to join us. But he had just posted that and I was like yeah, let's make this happen. And v said absolutely. And then we roped in Dr. B and dm jazzy Hans and I I'm just so over the moon that I get to be a part of it, won't
Snyders Return:it as you say it's fantastic and we haven't drove or I haven't offered you the chance to actually sort of allow people to you know while they're listening on find you and and everything involved within on social media. So would you mind to just letting people know where they can do that?
Katie Downey:Oh, absolutely. Um, you can find my account on all the social medias at Goblin Katie at geobee li n k t IE. You can catch D for every Sunday at 7pm eastern standard time on Twitch TV slash rock punch ATL or twitch.tv slash DND. We are hosted by dungeons the Wizards of the Coast official channel. And if you wanted to catch up on past episodes, you can go to the ronto experience ronto is aro n to it's the ronto experience.com and that will take you to the YouTube of the YouTube playlist of all our former episodes. icewind Dale rhyme at the frost maiden is every Saturday at 3pm eastern standard time on Twitch TV slash thread Raiders. Harper's tale hope and redemption is every other Tuesday and that starting October 20 at 8pm eastern standard time on Twitch TV slash mini terrain domain. And stellar Our kanem is released every other Monday on all major podcasting services. We've we've been on a bit of hiatus because of the world. And we're getting ready to actually start recording again. So now is a really good time to get to start listening to stellar or kanem and get caught up before the new episodes start coming out.
Snyders Return:Yeah, definitely. So well just just from what you've got there. There's the xhale you know, so you can you can follow the The Tempest cleric or the the the Paladin or I was gonna say for Mr. The north wind of fate since she's divination, but maybe it's tomorrow attic. That's,
Katie Downey:I don't know, I may steal that.
Snyders Return:Please feel free, feel free. And you're sassy Carter Theodora so put with each of these individual characters. And as you mentioned, your real life occupation being something more straight laced? Would that be fair to say? How is it you you inspire yourself what was influenced you in the way you bring these characters to life in their own different ways. Um,
Katie Downey:it's a lot of it has to do with the the DM style of the game, maybe once I once I sort of have a grip on that, it makes it easier for me to sort of get in the right mindset. And then from that mindset, the characters just sort of flow on. I once played in a game that was intended to be very dramatic, it was a one shot. And typically one shots tend to be more comedic. But this one was intended to be dramatic. And I didn't quite grasp that. And I learned from that that you want to you want to make sure that you've got the right feel. So I typically will talk to my DMS beforehand, and I put together playlists for each character. And in the case of streaming while I'm doing my makeup, I will listen to their playlist on shuffle and just kind of helps me get into their headspace. When I'm heading to do stellar or kanem, I have about a 30 minute drive to get to our studio. So I'll throw the playlist on there. And there's a lot of AC DC on that one, if that gives you a clue about the character. Yeah, the the biggest thing I've learned is having a feel for the style of the game. The my DMS have have heavily influenced the way I approach my characters in that regard. Because the I view myself as supporting their story in the same way that a good dm sees themself supporting the player story, there's there's sort of a mutual support going on there. And we build these things together, instead of some people will tell you, it's all about the players or it's all about the DM story. And I think it's a symbiotic relationship on everybody will have fun if everybody gets to, to have their their moments to shine, and that that goes for both sides of the table. And my work has actually come in really handy. With the role playing actually knowing to knowing how to be prepared before you get there before you arrive to the job site or to the table. Taking thorough notes, I'm a note taker, I don't have the best memory. So I make sure that I always take good notes that I can look through before the next session. Or between sessions. I'll go back I still look at we're on session 81, I believe of D four. And I go back and look at that was looking at session five the other night. Yeah, so it's it's so handy having good notes to work off of. I do a lot of problem solving in both and I've learned how to sort of logically approach a problem thanks to work. Because what I do is very dry. And there is a lot of analytical thinking to it a lot of linear problem solving and a lot of nonlinear problem solving. One of the things that I do professionally for work is I I will track down leaks, roof leaks, wall leaks, window leaks, figure out where they're coming in, because water likes to travel. So often times the sight of your leak is not where it's coming in. So I learned to kind of look at a situation and dismantle it for the parts. Thanks to that which comes in actually very handy at a table and then teamwork. I work I represent our clients who's typically the building owner or facility manager. And so I will represent them in dealing with contractors and act as a go between. So I've learned how to sort of be a mediator and how to work with groups. The only problem I've run into that I still struggle with is that I'm, I'm in more of a leadership position at work. And sometimes I have a tendency to try to lead at the table. And so I've gotten in the habit of kind of waiting to see if somebody else steps up as the the group leader before I start talking or doing anything. Because that that is an aspect of me that bleeds into a lot of my characters. I I like leading, actually, at the LARP previous LARP, I played I played in a game called narrow. I was a Countess in that game, which was the highest rank that you could get as a PC, I had about 30 players on on my team. And it, it taught me a lot that I actually took over into work about utilising people skills and making use of other people's strengths. So it's, it's a mutual beneficial life experience between the gaming and and my, my professional career.
Snyders Return:Well, yeah, I mean, definitely, if you can benefit from one into the other, and vice versa, then surely can be no bad thing. Yeah. Outside of work. And you using your free time, you spent a lot of time you know, in in the the entertainment of not only yourself, but but others other people that you sort of look to and think I'd love to join in a charity game with you or see if we could maybe stream something in the future or work on a project. What is it that drives you forward? And is the people in particular that obviously, I am not facility facilitator in these things, but people that you would love to work with in the future?
Katie Downey:And yeah, I see, I do charity things with Jasper's game day, which is a charity group that is focused on raising suicide awareness and helping groups that work towards suicide prevention on they're an absolutely amazing group of people. headed up by Fenway Jones, who is one of the most impressive young women I've ever met. You can find out more about them at Jasper's game day.com or on Twitter at Jasper's game day. They are just a wonderful group to work with. I've I've done three no, yes three different events with them. And they've all been just wonderful experiences. I've met some truly great people through that. And that's that's one of the things I like about doing the the charity games is you're with a random group of people usually so you get to meet new folks and that's that's one of my favourite things about gaming is getting to meet people. As far as let's see, I also do stuff with extra life de force currently working on extra life, and we are trying to raise last year we raised $11,000 for extra life which blew our minds. This year we're hoping for 15 so we'll we'll see how we do. My we do rewards and things like that and my favourite of the rewards for this year is when we reach$5,000 I will be running a game of labyrinths and leviathans. In game on D for my character Sasha will basically be running a d&d game for all the other players to make PCs for. So it's it's very meta, and I'm so excited about it. I occasionally dm I don't dm as often as I play but I'm, I'm looking forward to this one. It's It's gonna be great. So we've got that going on. And then I have a personal project that I've been working on. Then that is called this is this is a little risque. So I apologise. The charity is called critical tits. And it it is a charity that is raising money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. And we are doing our first stream the weekend of Halloween that's October 30 through November 1 of this year, and that will be on Twitch TV slash Goblin Katie and there is a Twitter account if you want more info. On that you can follow at critical tips. As far as people I'd like to work with there, there are a few I have met Matthew Lillard, and at a convention and I have watched him act since I was younger and I just the energy he brings to everything he does is incredible. I'm watching him play d&d is is a pure delight. And I would love to be in a game with him someday I do sponsor shout outs for beetle and Grimm. His company defore is fortunate enough to be sponsored by them. So I do their shout outs and then I have been acknowledged some pie has acknowledged me so my fingers are crossed that one day it'll translate and I'll get to play a game with him. Jennifer kretchmer is another person she is an impeccable actress, I would love to get to roll with her at a table. I was fortunate enough to star as Lady Capulets. Next to her Juliet on a Shakespearean stream that I do called what streams may come. We did Romeo and Juliet obviously, and I got to play her mother and I was just enthralled by her performance the entire time. She was incredible. I'm a huge fan of beyond heroes, and silver and steel. I just love every member of their cast, but she is definitely somebody that I would love to work with. And TJ storm, He is one of the most captivating people I have seen at a table. He just lights up everything he does everything, he just illuminates every project of his and from what I understand he's also a really, really nice person outside of playing, so I would love the opportunity to get to to meet him and play a game with him. No, that's
Snyders Return:that's an amazing so a list of people and just have had the privilege to sort of meet and spend time with with a few of them. I'm very jealous, I'm gonna be honest, I'm jealous.
Katie Downey:I'm jealous of me.
Snyders Return:If I were you, I'd be jealous or be Yeah.
Katie Downey:They're they're all, both Jennifer and Matthew are just wonderful people. And that's, that's a big part of what makes me want to play with somebody is knowing that there's a good person behind it. This community has so many incredible people in it. And I want to play a game with them all.
Snyders Return:But I'm not sure there's enough time for everybody. That's the show. Yeah. tacking on to that what has this community meant to you mean to you and until giving back to that community.
Katie Downey:I have rediscovered what it means to be a part of a community that really stretches your imagination through the tabletop gaming. Again, it's not to say that LARPing doesn't, but it's a very different kind, because you have Theatre of the mind versus actually being up and doing it. And I think that tabletop brings its own challenges. Because of that, and the the creativity. And the genius that I've seen in so many people is, is wonderful, the the heart of this community, there's that shared love translates into so much support, and so much love between the people within these games that there, we all have dark days and days that are rough. And I can hop on to Twitter, and look at my feed and just see so many people just wishing each other well, not knowing each other necessarily just general viewer, awesome person you rock, keep your head up kind of stuff. And it doesn't matter that it's not specifically meant for me it's the fact that somebody is putting that out there. And that happens a lot in this community there. There's a lot of love on people reminding each other to stay hydrated. It's it's the, the sort of silly little things like that, that that level of thinking of others really lifts my heart and so I try to to take that in and magnify it and put it back out. I have Someone recently called my Twitter feed wholesome. And that made me ridiculously happy. I like to try to improve the day of the people I interact with. And I feel like I get to do that with with this community. And that is such a wonderful thing. And knowing that you can, just with just with the simple Hey, have a great day, turn someone's day around. Because that that does happen. I've had it happen, where somebody posting that just turned my day around. And I don't know that other communities do that to the extent that the tabletop community does. So I am just incredibly grateful to all of the people out there who who add a little bit of positivity to the world.
Snyders Return:I can't I can do nothing but echo those sentiments To be honest, I think you've you perfectly perfectly encapsulated everything that's good about the this hobby this this community we we share them belong to and sort of welcome others into so thank you for wording it so much better than I could?
Katie Downey:Well, I try. Don't often succeed, but I try and I think that's the important part.
Snyders Return:If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. Exactly. I appreciate you for it. Speaking of community, I'd like I'd like you to remind everybody where they can find you again and the projects you're working on because I'd hate for people to to miss opportunity to really engage with you and and your fellow streamers and podcasters and all that sort of stuff. And again, sort of bring more into the the community in the fold. Absolutely.
Katie Downey:You can find me on all the socials at Goblin Katie geobee, Li n k t, ie, I am on defore every Sunday at 7pm eastern standard time on Twitch TV slash rock punch ATL, or twitch TV slash DND. Snyders Return:glad and I would love for the fun to continue another time. If you'd be willing to come back on to speak to me again in the future, maybe once you've had a chance to dm a little bit more.
