Dan Cammish NAPA Racing UK - Race 3 - Knockhill - 09 August 2026
Well Dan that rounds off what's been I guess a frustrating and challenging weekend for you but a podium to finish the weekend.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, podium to finish. It has been a funny one actually and I've dropped the ball and that wasn't the only one. Um I do think sometimes it's championship, I've said it before, I do think it's designed just to catch you out. And I have an uncanny habit of being caught out. I don't know whether that's me or whether that I need something around me to catch me when I make these errors, I don't know. But you know that that false start in race one, you know, I I knew that we was we're on a different start procedure, that's a problem, and it shouldn't really be happening at this level. You've gone from FIA Formula One light procedure to back to the old fashioned, so okay, like that's fine. There's a lot of pressure in these cars, a lot going on in your head, and that's not an excuse. I was the only one to make the mistake, but you're thinking, okay, you got that. I've lined up and my engineer stopped me a long way from where my tape was on the wall, so that's got me confused. The only lights I can see are at the top of the gantry and are minuscule to me. And there was a really long pause between the light, um, so the five-second board and the light. And these are not excuses, by the way. I'm just trying to talk you through how it feels as a driver. I've sat there and my thumb, as the lights gone on, my thumb has obviously I'm waiting for something, and uh that flicker has just set my thumb up and down in a quick motion. But the way these line lock works, it's it's on or off, so it's it's dropped the pressure out. I've moved two, three inches and stopped again, then made the worst start imaginable, and um and that's deemed a 10-second penalty. It's a massive penalty for the for what is a very small error, um, basically a slip of the thumb. But um, you know, ultimately I lost myself a lot of positions before we even started. So that aside, I recovered the day fairly well. Um, you know, I drove well in race two, I thought to get back to ninth, and I drove well in race three to Frickle Podium, but we're we haven't got a car under us at the moment. I don't know what we've done or where we're at. Um I've struggled all day um to keep the car pointing in the right direction with um up to speed with just front left. Um tire issues, it just feels like it feels like I'm having tire failure from like halfway through. I don't like it feels like I've killed it, I absolutely killed it. And I can't turn the car anymore. Like turn three, turn seven. Um I'm not joking, I almost I feel like I've come to a stop. Like I almost have to roll to a stop to get the thing to turn and I can go again. Two more laps, and and I'd have I'd have been sick. There's no doubt in my mind about that. So, as much as I'm pleased to be on the podium, I'm not gonna go away celebrate just yet because I think I think we've got a bit of work to do. I think we've got ourselves maybe in a bit of a bad place with the car. I don't know how we've done it. I know we've been trying to find a new pathway to get more speed. I think we might have lost some. So back to the drawing board a little bit, decompress after this weekend. My engineer will dig it out and we'll understand where to go, but we've just lacked the pace really, um, and a bit of bad luck thrown in and a little bit of boost management thrown in, but Ingram also had his issues. And I'm faster than I was on a case.
SPEAKER_01Are some of those issues uh exacerbated by Nock Hill?
SPEAKER_00I think so. I think so. So we've come here before, and all that really matters at Knock Hill is how fast you get off the corner. Don't worry about getting into the corner, worry about getting off it. And we can with that mentality. The problem was that the weather threw a spanner because we weren't conscious. The setup we wanted to run, we were very sceptical of what had happened in the rain. There's no doubt about that. And that was probably a good call because there was always a threat of rain. So the setup we actually wanted was probably not um ideal, but we settled on something that gave us an option to get back to a wet setup very quickly, um, and it's just let us a little bit sea, I think, this weekend, which is it happens, not you know, I've come away with a podium, and there's an opportunity there to be closer next time out. I mean, I kicked myself after race one, you know, the points to Ingram stretched, and I thought that would be a massive missed opportunity. In some ways it still is, but to come away only 13 points behind him, closer than I came, is an absolute um amazing result and gives me an opportunity now to go away and get my head down and think about how I'm going to overturn 13 points, which in this championship is a blink of an eye.
SPEAKER_01Just finally uh looking ahead to Donnington, uh, I mean that's a different prospect, isn't it, for you and for the team uh in terms of what you can achieve?
SPEAKER_00I think we're back to uh you know I think Froxton's very unique, and I think Knockhill's very unique. And then you get back to Donnington and you you know you're sort of back to a more um what you'd call a uh a normal if there is such a thing a racing circuit. You know, it's a sort of X-Grom pre-circuit, it's it's wide, it's fast, um, it doesn't have any of unusual characteristics, could you say, you know, we're not smashing into curves and doing this and doing that. So it's um back to sort of normality in that respect. So I think we can try some of the stuff we tried in the summer break on the car, but that's the first chance we're gonna get, I think, because I said to the guys we did learn a bit of the summer break, but I was like, we can't go to Fruxland and put it on because it's it's just too fast. And I don't think we're gonna knock ill because it's so different to everyone else. So maybe next time out we'll come back with a bit of a renewed um uh car and.
