AHK Vietnam

With a population soon to reach 100 million people and developing economy, Vietnam’s electricity has witnessed its demand increasing by almost 10% on average per year for the last period. Due to the country’s robust economic development, population growth, and heavier industrialization and urbanization, the trend continues to grow, and Vietnamese government is moving forward to develop renewable energy sources to ensure energy efficiency. Significantly, thanks to Vietnam’s recent efforts to diversify its power mix with a heavier focus on renewable energy projects, the country is now in a great position to build a sustainable future and attract foreign investments to its energy sector. Until 2030, this country aims to become one of the most efficient power markets in Southeast Asia with a wide variety of green power opportunities.

Despite being on the right track for developing and using clean energy, there are considerable challenges that Vietnam will need solve, such as Institutional barriers, financial challenges in the energy sector, potential coal-to-clean energy switch. For the period of 2021-2030, the capacity structure of coal-fired power will be reduced from 34% in 2020 to 27% in 2030.
