Hello everyone, welcome back to this Pharmacology Difficult Podcast. I'm your host, Dr. Radhika Vijay, NDBS ND Pharmacology, and this is the audio hub to get the best simplified basic tip strategies, methods, and lots of ideas to learn better, understand better and make your concepts crystal clear. If you really find and if there's a question hovering in your minds, is pharmacology difficult? Lend your ears for a while and let in the magic of knowledge. Well, today's topic that we are going to talk about is blood pressure drugs, yoga and lifestyle. Let's first of all come to the basics. What is regarded as high blood pressure? Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against the wall of your arteries. When this pressure is consistently elevated, it is called hypertension or high blood pressure. That's the definition we can give. It is a consistent reading of 130 by 80 millimeter mercury or higher. Now, this is the terms in which it is measured. The top number is systolic when the heart beats, and the bottom number that is the 80 is the diastolic when the heart rests. Classification involves stage 1 hypertension when systolic is 130 to 139mm mercury and diastolic is 80 to 89mm mercury. Stage 2 hypertension is when the systolic is 140mm mercury or higher, and diastolic is 90mm mercury or higher. And the last we can define is hypertensive crisis when the systolic is 180mm mercury or higher, and or the diastolic is 120mm mercury or higher. Now, this situation requires immediate medical attention. Now there are a lot of factors which influence blood pressure. You might be wondering that it is just a few of the things like eating and exercising, sitting around. No, not many factors influence the blood pressure. Diet, yes, that is one of the most important one. Stress. When you are highly stressed, your blood pressure actually elevates weight. When you're gaining weight, your blood pressure is at high risk of getting higher. Genetics. Yes, high blood pressure comes from genetics also. Sleep. If your sleep quality is poor, you may eventually land up into high blood pressure. Age. With the advancing age, the risk advances. Physical activity. If the physical activity is less, there is greater risk of high blood pressure and your lifestyle. It is everything that you do, all your routines, all your habits. So it is a kind of a silent killer. I'm talking about the high blood pressure. The symptoms they appear quite late till the serious complications may occur, like heart attack, stroke, kidney damage, or heart failure. Then only the person wakens up. Now commonly in the best used drugs or drug classes for hypertension are first of all ACE inhibitors, lecidopro, ramipril, and arapril. Secondly, angiotensin receptor blockers, losartin, termisartin, valsartin, then calcium channel blockers, amlodipine, nephidipine, deltiazin, then diuretics, chlorothalidon, hydrochlorothiazide, and endipamite, then beta blockers like metaphorol, etinolol, and nebivolol. All these medications they save lives, they reduce the risk of stroke, heart attacks, and kidney damage. Now the next question that you all might be wearing and you're that may be arising in your mind is can a yoga mat help lower down the blood pressure? Well, the answer is more scientific more interesting than you can ever think of. So let's get to know how yoga fits in the whole picture and helps lower the blood pressure. Well, the answer is yes, yoga may help, but there is an essential catch. First of all, let's get to know a few important points. Yoga practice can help in modest reduction of blood pressure. Combination of healthy lifestyle measures it's a great additive or adjunct. What might be the science involved? Well, it's nothing but the stress reduction. Stress stimulates sympathetic nervous system and stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol are released. And both can lead to high blood pressure in a chronic state. Yoga includes slow and controlled breathing and movements, relaxation techniques, stretching excises, etc. They all help to reduce the stress. Autonomic nervous system is also in the scene. Yoga promotes greater parasympathetic activity, the activity or the system of rest and digest. It enhances relaxation and boosts healthy cardiovascular function. Now a message for the consistent yoga buddies. Well, you're quiet, healthy, and active people. The sleep quality of such people is very good. Their habits incline onto a healthier scale. All these parameters they check upon a positive and well-maintained blood pressure. Yoga is not a substitute for medicines for hypertension. Our thought and ideas should not be that yoga versus medicines. It should be yoga plus medicines. Yoga is one of the tools in the large cardiovascular toolkit. And this toolkit also includes medicines, regular exercises, balanced diet, less sugar and salt intake, good sleep, stress management, weight management, regular medical follow-up. As a pharmacologist, the best results are achieved, I would say, when evidence-based medicines they work hand in hand with a healthy lifestyle, habits and routines. So yoga and healthy lifestyle is a great supportive strategy. It's like a comprehensive approach to cardiovascular health. My final note would be medicines, they control the blood pressure, healthy habits, they support the blood pressure. Yoga may help strengthen the bridge between the two. With this note, we wrap up today's episode and hope you found it very useful and informative. All my listeners, you can follow me on Instagram, X, and LinkedIn.
