How to Achieve Your Goals Using Positive Thinking
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Positive thinking. It’s one of those concepts that’s both universally praised and, let’s be honest, universally eye-rolled at. You’ve probably heard it all: “Just think positive!” “Good vibes only!” “Manifest your dreams into reality!” While those phrases sound like they’re straight out of a motivational Instagram post (or an overly enthusiastic TED Talk), there’s actually some truth to them, when you know how to make it work for you.
The power of positive thinking is about much more than just pretending everything is fine and dandy. It’s about changing how you approach challenges, using optimism to fuel your actions, and creating a mindset that drives you toward your success.
Let’s dive into how positive thinking can actually help you crush your goals without needing to fake it till you make it.
Positive Thinking Isn’t Magic—It’s a Choice
By shifting how you think, re-framing challenges, and focusing on the positives, even on tough days, you’ll find that you’re more resilient, motivated, and encouraged to keep going when things get tough. And, in the end, that’s what makes all the difference.

How to Achieve Your Goals Using Positive Thinking
1. Stop Waiting for Motivation to Knock on Your Door
You know that magical moment when motivation shows up, takes you by the hand, and whispers sweet productivity in your ear? Yeah, it’s a myth. Waiting for motivation is like waiting for perfect weather before you go for a run, you’ll still be sitting on the couch when the year ends, or motivation is like that friend who promises to help you move, only to bail at the last minute, or motivation is like Wi-Fi in a crowded coffee shop—strong for a second, then gone when you need it most. Motivation is more like a cat: it shows up when it feels like it, ignores you when you need it, and vanishes when things get tough.
Here’s the thing about positive thinking: it’s not about waiting for motivation to hit. It’s about choosing to believe that you’re capable of making progress, even when motivation is nowhere to be found.
When you think positively, you condition yourself to act despite how you feel. It’s a little like the gym—some days, you’re ready to crush it, and others, you can barely drag yourself out the door. Positive thinking tells you that even a small effort is progress. So, even if you’re just putting in 15 minutes of work, that’s better than doing nothing. It’s about showing up consistently, even when you’d rather nap.
Action creates momentum; momentum creates motivation. Not the other way around.
“Everybody works hard when they feel like it. The best work hard when they don’t.”
- Peter Vidmar, Olympic Athlete
2. Believe You’re Worth the Effort (Yes, Seriously)
It’s easy to sabotage ourselves by thinking, “Why even bother? I’m probably not good enough.” You’ve been there, right? You set a goal, and then that voice pops up, questioning your abilities. Spoiler alert: everyone deals with it.
This is where positive thinking kicks in. When you choose to believe in your abilities, even when the evidence isn’t immediately there, you start acting as though you deserve the success you want. And guess what? People who act as if they deserve success are a lot more likely to get it.
Start by telling yourself, “I am capable,” “I have everything I need to succeed,” and—yes, this one’s corny and effective, “I am worthy of my dreams.” Positive thinking doesn’t mean you’re blind to your flaws. It just means you’re choosing to focus on your strengths and potential instead of your doubts.
Follow these tips to help you change a belief that isn’t helping you and supporting you in where you want to ultimately be in business and in life.
• What beliefs do you currently have around your goals?
• How is this serving you?
• Is this really true?
• What’s possible if this belief were different?
• Look for evidence to the contrary.
• Actively choose to change your belief.
• Act as if it’s already true.
Robert Kiyosaki said: "It’s not what you say out of your mouth that determines your life, it’s what you whisper to yourself that has the most power."
3. Reframe Obstacles as Opportunities
Life throws curveballs. Sometimes, they hit you in the face (metaphorically speaking, of course). With positive thinking, you learn to reframe obstacles as opportunities for growth.
Instead of thinking, “Why does this always happen to me?” flip it around by saying something like: “Okay, this challenge is tough, so what can I learn from it?” Positive thinkers are experts at finding the silver lining, even when things seem pretty dark.
For example, let’s say your goal is to start a new business, and you hit a major roadblock. Instead of throwing your hands up in frustration, you could think, “This setback is giving me a chance to refine my plan and make sure I’m really ready to tackle the next stage.” It’s about adjusting your mindset to see the lesson in every challenge and letting that push you forward.
4. Visualize Success (and Actually Believe It)
Visualization is a tool that’s often overlooked, and it’s incredibly powerful. When you imagine your success, you’re activating your brain to work toward that outcome. Here’s the important part—you need to truly believe it’s possible.
Positive thinking isn’t about wishful thinking. It’s about convincing yourself that your goal is within reach, and your brain needs to get comfortable with the idea of success.
Here’s a quick exercise: Close your eyes and visualize yourself achieving one of your goals. Picture every detail with the feelings, the sights, the sounds, and the smells. Feel the excitement of success. When you do this regularly, you start programming your brain to believe that success is something you deserve and something that’s possible.

5. Use the Power of "I Will" Instead of "I Should"
The words we use matter more than we think. Let’s break it down:
· “I should work out today” feels like a chore, doesn’t it? It feels like an obligation you’d rather avoid.
· “I will work out today” feels more empowering, like a commitment to yourself.
Positive thinking shifts your language from passive to active. It’s about creating momentum through powerful, affirming statements. Instead of saying, “I should eat healthier,” say, “I will nourish my body with healthy food today.” It makes your goals feel like an active choice rather than something you’re dragging yourself through.
6. Surround Yourself with Positivity (and Maybe a Few Cheerleaders)
They say you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with. If you’re hanging out with a bunch of Debbie Downers, guess what? Your energy is probably going to match theirs. When you surround yourself with people who support you, believe in your potential, and encourage your growth, you’re setting yourself up for even greater success.
Positive thinking isn’t just about what’s going on in your own head. It’s also about the environment around you. You need to protect your energy. If a friend or coworker constantly tells you your goals are unrealistic, it’s time for a mental health reset (or a new friend is what I would strongly recommend).
Find people who uplift you. Join communities that are focused on growth. Build a tribe of cheerleaders who remind you that even on your worst days, you’ve got this.
7. Celebrate the Small Wins (Seriously, Don’t Skip This)
One of the biggest mistakes people make when working toward goals is forgetting to celebrate the small wins. You’re so focused on the final destination that you forget how far you’ve come. This is where positive thinking will really help boost your motivation.
Every time you hit a milestone, whether it’s finishing a chapter of a book or hitting a mini sales target, celebrate it. Acknowledge your progress, even if it’s just a small step forward. Positive thinking isn’t just about big leaps; it’s about appreciating every single bit of progress you make. And trust me, those small wins add up.
Positive Thinking Isn’t Magic—It’s a Choice
Let’s face it, positive thinking isn’t some magical cure-all. It’s not going to magically solve all your problems or make your goals materialize out of thin air. What it will do is help you approach your goals with a mindset that actually encourages progress rather than self-doubt.
By shifting how you think, re-framing challenges, and focusing on the positives, even on tough days, you’ll find that you’re more resilient, motivated, and encouraged to keep going when things get tough. And, in the end, that’s what makes all the difference.
So, now it’s your turn. Choose to believe in your ability to reach your goals, one positive thought at a time. And if you ever need a little extra boost, just remember: You’ve got this!
That’s how your goals become your reality.
