7 Psychological Tricks to Achieve Your Goals (That Actually Work)
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Goals are easy to set and painfully hard to stick to, as you already know. We’ve all made that magical to-do list on January 1st only to find it crumpled under a pile of laundry by the end of February.
If you’ve ever set a goal and watched it quietly die, you’re not lazy. You’re just human. And humans, well...we’re weird. We make emotional decisions, get distracted by snacks, and will somehow clean the entire kitchen before writing an email that could generate additional revenue.
Here’s the good news: You can hack your brain. Not in a shady, Silicon Valley techy way, but in small, sneaky psychological ways that trick your brain into showing up when your motivation disappears.
Let’s explore 7 psychological tricks backed by science, experience, and a little human chaos that will help you reach your goals, or maybe even exceed them.

7 Psychological Tricks to Achieve Your Goals (That Actually Work)
Goals are easy to set and painfully hard to stick to, as you already know.
1. Make It Embarrassing Not to Do It
Let’s be real. Most of us care more about not looking bad than about becoming the best version of ourselves. That’s why accountability works. The #1 reason people don’t get what they want in life is lack of accountability.
Post your goals publicly. Text a friend. Join a group where people will notice when you flake. Or better yet, tell someone who will lovingly give you the nudge you need when you quit.
Example: A guy once wrote a $100 check to a political group he hated and gave it to a friend. If he skipped a workout, the check would be mailed. He never missed a workout.
Moral of the story? Sometimes shame is a stronger motivator than self-love. Use it to your advantage.
2. Shrink the Task Until It’s Ridiculously Easy
Here’s a trick: when your brain resists starting something, it’s probably too big.
The solution? Cut it in half. Then cut it in half again. Keep going until the task is so small it’s almost insulting.
Want to start running? Just put on your running shoes. That’s the goal.
Want to write a book? Open a Google document and type one sentence.
Once you start, you’ll likely keep going. Even if you don’t, congrats because you did the first important action. You won today. And you’ll win again tomorrow.
It’s called the “Minimum Viable Effort” approach, and it’s way better than waiting for the perfect mood to strike (spoiler alert: it won’t).
3. Use the ‘Fresh Start’ Effect to Your Advantage
You know that surge of motivation you get on Mondays? That’s the Fresh Start Effect, and it’s real.
Our brains love clean slates. They help us mentally separate “old me” from “new me.”
You can use this to reset anytime. New week? Great. New month? Let’s go. Your birthday? Perfect excuse. Even something silly like “new notebook” energy can help.
Want bonus points? Create your own fresh start by declaring a "new chapter" in your life. Give it a name. (Yes, really. “Project Get My Life Together” has a ring to it.)
4. Temptation Bundle Like a Sneaky Genius
Temptation bundling means combining something you need to do with something you want to do.
· Only let yourself watch Netflix while on the treadmill
· Listen to your favorite podcast while doing chores
· Enjoy a fancy coffee while knocking out boring admin tasks or taking your daily vitiams
This trick makes unpleasant tasks more tolerable and turns routines into rewards.
It’s science-backed too. Behavioral economist Katy Milkman coined the term, temptation bundling, after realizing she could only get herself to go to the gym if she paired it with listening to The Hunger Games audiobook.
Sometimes all you need is the right bribe.
5. Make the Future You Feel Real (and a Little Judgy)
Here’s a hard truth: we don’t really believe in our future selves. That’s why “Future Me will deal with it” is such a tempting lie.
However, when your future self feels real, you’re more likely to make better choices.
Consider doing this:
· Write a letter from the Future You. How does the future you feel about you skipping today’s workout?
· Visualize the Future You after crushing your goal. What do you look like? How do you feel? How are you living?
· Use an aging app and save the photo as your phone background. Maybe a slight creepy, and yet surprisingly effective.
This trick creates emotional connection, and maybe even a little guilt. That’s useful.
6. Gamify the Boring Stuff
Ever played a game you didn’t even like...just because you were obsessed with leveling up?
You can bring that same energy to real life.
Track your progress visually. Give yourself points. Create levels or milestones. Use habit apps or just a simple paper tracker with gold star stickers. (Childish? Maybe. Effective? Yes.)
When progress feels like a game, your brain stays engaged. You get dopamine hits just from showing up.
And honestly, chasing streaks and unlocking achievements feels way better than chasing vague “discipline” vibes.
For help with streaking your way to peak performance and unstoppable results, read my article at https://bit.ly/streak-outcomes.
7. Let Identity Drive Your Actions
Most people try to achieve their way into a new identity.
They think, “If I run enough, I’ll become a runner.”
However, the truth is flipped: You become successful when you act like the person you want to be, before it becomes true.
So instead of saying, “I’m trying to eat healthier,” say, “I’m the kind of person who takes care of my body, so I can live as healthy as possible and as long as possible.”
“I want to write more” becomes “I’m a writer, so I write even when I don’t feel like it.”
This trick flips the script. You don’t wait until you “feel ready.” You act like the person you want to become...and eventually, you believe it and have a high probability of becoming that person.
Here’s The Bottom Line
Most goal-setting advice tries to turn you into a productivity robot. That’s not the point.
You’re not trying to squeeze every drop of effort out of yourself. You’re working to build a life where progress is normal, not exhausting. Where it’s harder to quit than to keep going.
Psychological tricks don’t make you superhuman. They just help you outsmart the human tendencies that normally get in your way.
So, pick one. Implement it today. See what happens.
Oh…and One More Thing
You don’t need to wait until you feel “motivated.” Most days, you won’t. Start anyway.
Set a timer. Laugh at your resistance. Take the tiniest first step.
And if you fall off? Okay. Restart tomorrow.
You’re not behind. You’re just human.
