Escape The American Dream Trap And Design A Life You Actually Want
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Most of us don’t wake up one day and choose a life we hate. We drift into it one “responsible” step at a time: chasing the next credential, the bigger house, the nicer car, the job that offers tiny raises and a lot of expectations. Then we look up and realize we’ve been building a life that makes sense on paper but doesn’t feel like ours. That’s the trap Jordan Edwards tackles in this fast, focused Five Minute Friday.
We walk through a life design reset you can use immediately, starting with a five-year vision that’s surprisingly vivid: close your eyes, imagine the best five years of your life, and describe it like you’re calling us from the future. From there, we sharpen your decision-making with three practical questions for career planning and personal growth: what you genuinely enjoy, what creates real value in the marketplace, and what comes easy to you that others find hard. It’s a simple framework that helps you stop taking on “more” by default and start choosing what actually fits your strengths and values.
We also talk about the missing piece most people ignore: support. Who can help you get there? Who’s already walked the path? Defining success for yourself takes independent thinking, and it can mean being judged for choosing differently, but it also makes your goals feel lighter and your next steps clearer.
If you’re ready to stop living someone else’s definition of success, press play, then subscribe, share this with a friend who needs a reset, and leave a review with your answer: what do you want your life to look like five years from now?

Five Minute Friday Kickoff
SPEAKER_00Most people are building the wrong life. And I want you to start to build your life this way instead. This is Five Minute Friday, and it's Jordan Edwards, and we're going to give you insightful information in just five minutes. So, what's the big trap? It's society's trap, especially in America. It's to buy the big house, to get the car that you want, get go to college, to do all of these things for the American dream, to have a job that goes up with 2 to 3% inflation. Like these are the things that they tell you to do. And the truth is that most of us are building lives that we don't actually want. Like if we really look down the line, do we actually want these lives? Is this something that we feel that is good for us? And I deal with this with all of my clients. Every single one. Before we even get started, I always ask them, what's the starting point? Like five years from now, close your eyes and think to yourself, what do you want your life to look like? And pretend it was the best five years ever and actually call me and pretend you're calling me. And we do the ring ring, and they call me and start to tell me about that life. So they they can see it and start to believe it and start to feel it. So the first thing I would say is look out five years. See what it is, the type of life you want to create. The second thing I would think about is there's a lot of unknowns. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't plan. That means that you should adjust. So you should ask yourself, what each activity I do, each project I do, and every business I'm in, what do I seem to enjoy? What do I get out of? What provides a lot of value to the marketplace? What do I find really easy that people may find difficult? And that's usually something that you practice a lot. It usually tends to get better as you practice more. So I want you to realize that you're it's a self-fulfilling loop where you just keep revalidating yourself to do more and more and more, to take on more. And what is the third question? The third question you should ask yourself is like, who can help me get there? Who can be in my corner in this new journey that I'm looking on? Who's been there before? And you start to look at this and start to realize that it's not all that scary. It's not all that crazy. And it's important for us to really define what success looks like for us. Don't let society do it. Don't let your parents do it. Decide it for yourself. Think about it. In our lives, we never think. We aren't grown to be taught to be independent thinkers. And I'm asking you, I'm encouraging you to be that independent thinker. Be the person that makes their own decision. Be the person that inspires others. Be the one that steps out and you may be different. You might be judged, but that's okay. Go out and be that person that you're looking for. Thank you. I ask you on this five minute Friday to start taking action, start to ask yourself these questions and apply it to your life. And I hope you have an incredible, incredible day.
