About Donna Harris-Richards

Donna Harris-Richards LICSW, CST is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and Couples Therapist located in the charming New England coastal seaport city of New Bedford, MA. Born and raised in New York City, she's a sex-positive sex therapist with a mission to help individuals, couples and families embrace and integrate sex-positive thinking into daily life for optimal health, including sexual health and wellness. She says, “We go for annual mammograms, gynecological exams and prostate exams for physical sexual health. We owe ourselves check-ups on the emotional and mental aspects of sexual health for optimal health and wellness.” Listen to her podcasts and read her blogs at www.sexandcouplestherapy.com

Home Visits

Donna did a lot of home visits. It was suitable for her clients. Also, it helped keep her census up. Sometimes people couldn't get to the office. So she would need to go to them. It's all about meeting our clients where our clients are at. However, it was a struggle. At some points, Donna struggled with being a sex therapist and having the private practice in her home. There's no sex that takes place in the office, there's no touching, there's none of that. Of course, those clear boundaries will keep your practice extremely ethical and establish transparency with folks.

Trust Yourself

Donna wishes that she hadn't waited too long to trust herself and feel good about the work she was doing. Getting started is slow. There are a lot of people in the world who really don't think they need to change. It can be hard to trust these types of people. Sadly, these people are not curious enough. They're a little rigid; they're a bit too furious. Most people need to take time to figure out how to step into themselves and become more confident. The more competent you become, the more confident you become. As a therapist, Donna says to trust the process.

Tune in as we chat about having better boundaries with clients, outsourcing marketing in your private practice, and why Donna stopped taking insurance.
