you can join the party I I mean English class well we treat it like a party believe me in my classes which are usually on a Monday the first thing I tell my students is let's have some fun and you know what just by saying that aloud to myself I'm also convincing myself that we came to learn but we've got to have a good time in the process let's take a look at the intro really quickly because there's some good vocabulary in there to tell apart I said you can't tell look and see aart okay it's a really good phrasal verb to to know if you have twins you could use it right oh they look alike I can't tell them apart and then I said not on my watch and this is where watch is not a verb watch is re just don't mix it up with the one on the wall you've got a clock on the wall and you've got a watch on your wrist but when you say the expression not on my watch is not while I'm in charge so I said you can't tell them apart well not on my watch okay or I'll give you another example you're smoking during your break not on my watch La so my Amigos what's the difference what's the difference between C look and watch well they'll all have their own phrasal verbs they'll all they're all going to have their own idiomatic expressions and we'll take a look at those in the bonus part but let's look at the essence of the words the everyday usage and we'll also take a look at the conjugation for any pronunciation things that might come up the first one we're going to take a look at is C here your turn already every day I see interesting things yes yesterday yesterday I saw did you say so it's not so it's saw a awesome guys if I had a dime for every time I've heard i s i s him no please don't sow anyone you're gonna kill him right I S him so yeah I know English is weird I'm trying to demystify it here so every day I see people yesterday I yesterday I saw people and lately I've I have I've seen people good well to see is to notice or become aware of something with your eyes often without intentional Focus so that's kind of where the difference lies between these three words are we doing it on purpose is it passive is it active so in this case you're not really trying I see things I'm not trying to see them I just see them they're everywhere right right it's the ability to perceive something in your line of sight and it's typically passive come see this okay come look at this right so in that case they're saying I want you to you know pay attention to it but see is something you don't really have to think about you do it right thankfully because you have eyesight be right we have eyesight so we can see hopefully if not your blind which is Theo so the ability to perceive something in your line of sight typically passive as always let's look at some examples I see a bird in the tree did you say beard bird bir bird I see a bird in the tree ask me do you no do you do you do you see do you do you do you see a bird in the tree I see two birds in the tree and do you remember the expression in English to kill two birds with one stone we don't say with a shot we say to kill two birds with one stone okay[Music] beardo Bear all right just making sure all right the next one did you see the sign as we drove by did you did you see the sign same word did you see the sign as we drove by no it was too far away I couldn't see the sign you know it from a song I Saw the Sign and it opened up my mind I saw the sign and we'll look at more examples of see look and watch in pop culture but that's in the bonus part also here's a little tip in each one I'll give you a little tip as well just to reinforce it C is often used when something simply comes into your field division oh I see another car it just came into my field division or when you're talking about the ability to perceive things I see a tree I see a sheep right the things that you see your sight as we said your eyesight and often it is unintentional any questions all right let's take a look at look all right is take a look at or have a look at well it depends if you're British or American of course Americans take a look at something it British people have a look let's conjugate the verb every day I look at things now this is right now now now there's some intention here okay every day I look at things yesterday your turn yesterday I looked at did you say looked at or looked at it looked he looked at it he looked at he looked at it so practice it because I'm telling you if you can do that you're going to make your life easier because what we're doing is taking syllables out right we're we're putting things together where they naturally go together so uh to look at did he look at it yes he looked at it he looked at it did you say it like me if you did great job and[Applause] lately ever lately I've I've I have lately I've looked at it looked at it all right and it's to direct your eyes in a particular direction or at a particular thing intentionally okay I'm going to look at you now like I'm planning to do it you see things passively you look at at things on purpose okay you're making a conscious effort to direct your gaze the word gaze is mid okay so we're going to look at that when we get into our our synonyms and antonyms I always think it's a good way to take advantage of each verb to look at other verbs that are synonyms and antonyms and I love to know antonyms and synonyms in Spanish you know the more um Rich our vocabulary is the more um it'll it'll be easier for us to express ourselves we'll have the right words when we need them for the right situation so you're making a conscious effort to direct your gaze some examples look it look it now I know this for a fact my daughter says look it look at this look okay look it look it look at look at it look at this look at this look at it because my daughter's a parrot there's no filter she just pronounces it like I do so it makes me realize I'm learning about my pronunciation look at this look at this beautiful painting now you can say look at this look at this look at this when the L look at this beautiful painting okay uh look at this beautiful painting Deon no no no I don't wanna you can say I don't want to I don't want to look at this beautiful painting I don't want to look at this look at this all right let's look at another example she looked out she looked out the window to check the weather so it's on purpose to look out the window right to look in the window then you're a stalker right if you're looking in the window so she looked out she looked out she looked out the window to check the weather ask me did she look out the window to check the weather did she look out the window to check the weather right look out no right did she look out the window to check the weather right because we break it into two parts all right yeah she looked out the window to check the weather a little tip we use look when you want to emphasize actively directing your eyes towards something AIA algo toward something it usually implies intention or focus on a specific object or Direction okay pretty clear so far good let's take a look at watch okay we already said watch we already looked at the idiomatic expression not on my watch not on my watch right well to watch well first let's conjugate it it has that t sound so it's like look same category I watched it I watched it hey I'm just telling you how to say it here did you watch it did you yeah I watched it I watched it lat are we seeing a pattern here great well I'm telling you if you get used to it with this one and the next verb and soon you'll just naturally do it all right so to look at something a tively for a period of time okay now usually you're looking at something that is moving or changing so that's the difference here I want you to look at my kid right I want you to watch my kid right I don't want you to look at my purse look at my purse I'm going to the bathroom she'll say watch so watch is like I said so watching if looking is passive excuse me active seeing is I'm getting mixed up here because I don't normally rationalize these I just use them naturally so see is passive look is active well watch is really active does that make sense that's it and again the the first one is irregular the second two are regular but they've got that t sound so that's going to be fun later on when we practice we can practice putting them together so yes um also it's observing something over a duration to see if something happens okay you're on top of it it's in thema okay we say the same thing I'm on top of it let's take a look at it we watched the sunset together yeah to look at it oh look at the sunset but to watch is to sit back and take it in right to take it in to breathe it in as we say I know we've looked at this in some of our episodes about cities perhaps Niagara Falls it's breathtaking you want to breathe it in so we watched the sunset together watched we watched the sunset together ask me did you did you watch the sunset together no no we didn't watch the sunset together we watched the sunrise together okay did you did you okay watch the next one I like to watch documentaries in my free time did I say I like to or I like to I like to watch documentaries La is you well I've heard a lot of people say documentary nope in English docu so say it with me I like to I like to watch documentaries in my free time ask me do you like to do you like to watch documentaries in your free time so do you like to do you like to do you like to watch documentaries in your free time yeah I love to watch documentaries in my free time do make it know no I don't like to wa I don't like to I don't like to watch them I don't like to watch documentaries in my free time okay why don't we try this let's put it in the past tense mea I liked to I liked to liked to I liked to watch documentaries in my free time when I was a kid I liked to this right hey but this is about nuances in the end right okay did you did you like to watch documentaries in your free time yeah I used to I used to like to watch documentaries in my free time just to make sure you got it down pad so your sister likes to watch documentaries in her free time did you say it your sister likes to she likes to watch documentaries in her free time her in her in her free time ask me does she does she like to watch documentaries in her free time does she like to watch documentaries in her free time great job if you're playing along you're working on these really really important syntaxes in the language all right and a tip with watch okay to use watch when you're viewing something so something that typically involves motion or activity a performance sports TV we watch TV or something that you follow for a length of time right I'm get bead all right and also there's another thing with this word watch when it it comes to Media no series documentaries movies what's the difference between I saw that movie yesterday or I watched that movie yesterday I don't know if this is a British thing but it's definitely an American thing so if I tell you I watched that movie yesterday I watched it at home I watched it I watched it at home if I told you I saw that movie I saw it at the movies l in I'm pretty sure we looked at this in another episode well maybe in the English in movies episode remember if you haven't heard that one that's a lot of fun that episode because we look at some of the most famous movie quotes ever just remember folks if you get sick a little bit of the verbs because sometimes this can be very heavy as I warned you before it can be quite dactic you always have seasons 1 through six where you can take a trip to Las Vegas or discover uh the Milky Way laia laa so uh that's the idea the idea is to have a little bit of everything have some topics and then have the essential verbs and the essential structures that accompany those verbs all right so I think it's clear we've cleared up the the air as we say to clear the air is to demystify these three verbs I think as far as pronunciation is concerned as well we're going to practice more as you know in the bonus episode we always take a look at the phrasal verbs so you can imagine we're going to have a lot of phrasal verbs we're going to have idiomatic expressions that we'll also take a look at and a little challenge at the end to make sure you've got it down pat but before we get going we looked at that one in the get episode before we get going let's take a look at some synonyms the first one we looked at is gaze right he likes to gaze out the window now to gaze is interesting because it's not the same as peaking and we'll take a look at it so that's another good thing right so that's what we're looking at when we look at this so these are very useful words guys here and you should know them and the different weight that they each carry gaze well just think of this one he likes to gaze at the stars he gazed he gazed at the Stars last night he likes stargazing I think she gazed at me to gaze at and really important to learn those prepositions to look at watch well you can to watch for something but a watch generally doesn't go with a preposition right can you watch this right can you look at this and see generally unless it's a phrasal verb doesn't go with one so really the only one that has like a preposition that almost always goes with it in the the literal sense is look at look at which we already looked at it's look at look at this look at look at look at this look at this look at this to gaze at this is a lot different right oh he's been gazing out the window for hours you're a little bit lost when you're gazing right the next one glance that's really quick a glance is a quick look right when you you look at somebody really quickly it's a regular verb she glanced at me from across the room to glance the next one's Peak this is a great one this is one my daughter likes to do at Christmas she wants to Peak at everybody's presence and to Peak is to look really quickly can I take a peek can I peek at that so Peak see everyone has its own weight the next one's to stare did you know it's rude to stare is the yeah to stare see right from the context there you knew what I was saying right don't stare at me are you staring at me that's weird why does that guy keep staring at me this is nice right it's weird when people stare at you and another to witness so you know witness is he witnessed a crime he witnessed their wedding okay to see to be there for let's take a look at some antonyms and then we'll wrap up I hope you guys will join us in the bonus episode because we've got some juicy content and you're not going to want to miss it and there's our first antonym to miss per I didn't see it I missed it I I blinked right to Blink is both eyes to wink is with one eye so wink is usually intentional wink wink and blink is oh man I can't stop blinking I think I've got dust in my eyes okay so don't blink you might miss it no another one to overlook we've looked at this one too to overlook oh I'm sorry I didn't see yours I overlooked it right it I overlooked it the next one to disregard please disregard my last email disregard my last email to look away that's a song If you see me walking by and the tears are in my eye look away baby look away and the last one the last one is amazing and it's to unse something Rel I see it a lot on Twitter let me give it to you in context because as you know context is key so you see something on Twitter you see a maybe um a picture of Elon Musk it's AI they take Elon Musk which by the way we have an episode on Elon Musk and they put him in a tutu like a ballerina and they put lipstick on his face and you see that you know you open up your Twitter or your Instagram and you see that image and you're like oh my God I wish I could unsee that see something we can use it not just with things that are weird but things that are sometimes on Twitter too that's another thing you know I open up my timeline and I see somebody you know punching another guy in the face and I'm like oh man I wish I could unsee that I think the translation would be well ladies and gentlemen as you see we've reached the end of the episode I hope you'll join us in the bonus episode of the this week's FYI[Music]
