welcome to season 8 of FYI this season instead of tackling topics we'll discover the most common verbs in the English language let's take a ride in my ride and explore English we'll ride it out and enjoy the ride on this week's episode of FYI welcome to for your info English you got[Music] it hello hello hello welcome welcome FYI yeah we've got another exciting episode of FYI we're going to enjoy the ride and you don't even have to be on a ride unra or to be in a car to enjoy the ride we often use it to refer to life itself life is short so enjoy the ride so in that aspect the word ride is El Camino el and if you saw in the intro I always like to put some uses of the verb in there I said let's take a ride in my ride did you get it well also you know ride the verb we're looking at today but also if I say I like your ride I like your ride nice ride so we're already looking at many usages coaches and then I said we'll ride it out and to ride something out is to finish it to ride it to the endat I think might be a good word and we'll enjoy the ride as I just said and that's not just an expression it's a philosophy so let's enjoy the ride today while we take a look at this very very useful verb and noun as we've said already it's a ride so you could say I like to ride the rides yeah sure it is a bit redundant so you can say I like to go on the rides but of course you can say I like to ride the rides also to ride a motorcycle we're going to look at all the uses but there's also one that's a little bit more risque to ride a person that's a sexual position so just to let you know it's got that other meaning as well it is a versatile verb it's got a lot of different contexts um physical activities as we just said Vehicles animals a person in the sexual sense and metaphorical as we just said about navigating experiences or situations in life so folks are you ready to enjoy the ride well let's start off with the fact that it's an irregular verb your turn every day I ride the bus yesterday I rode the bus so wait a second are you telling me I rode down the road sounds the same absolutely and if that works if it helps you remember the past tense perfect he rode down the road in his new ride another way of saying car as we said and the third column lately he's he has Loos lately he's ridden down the road so there you go ride Road ridden and as you know we're going to take a look at all the uses today in our bonus episode which is exclusively for patrons well I gotta tell you something that's where we get to the meaty stuff that's where we get to the phasal verbs the idiomatic expressions we get to it in pop culture as well and we finish off with a challenge or two to see if you got it perfectly so let's start with some of those primary uses there as I said a vehicle a vehicle it can be a vehicle with a motor or without a motor so you can ride a motorcycle or you can ride a bike right we even have an expression I don't know if you have a similar one in Spanish it's like riding a bike so once you know it you never forget it you might be a little bit Rusty but it's a skill that you can just pick up at any time and you're back like you know it's not a a skill that you forget once you know it so it's like riding a bike as I said we've got a lot of metaphors here today as well life is a ride a journey so riding a vehicle vehicle yeah vehicle vehicle let's take a look at the example I ride my bike to work every day okay I ride my bike to work every day ask me do you do you do you ride do you ride your bike to work every day yeah I ride my bike to work every day I rode my bike to work remember we just looked at it I rode my bike to work yesterday and just be careful with that every day there every day it's really easy to remember when every day is two words it's like Spanish God when every day is one word it's it's the adjective so this is not your everyday English class okay no I ride my bike to work every day all right it's a very common one I think that's the first thing we learn to ride a bike or a tricycle or something like this also we use it with animals she learned to ride a horse when she was a child she learned to ride a horse she learned to I don't say to she learned to ride a horse when she was a child right what do we call that we call it horseback riding she loves horseback riding that's the noun so she learned to ride a horse bable when she was a child ask me did she did she learn to ride a horse when she was a child we in how would you say I don't even know how to say in Spanish well I've never well maybe once or twice so to put it in third person present perfect her brother or he's he's never written he has remember you he's never ridden she's never gone is she has so she's never her brother's never ridden a horse he's never ridden a horse how can you turn that into a question has he ever ridden a horse has he ever he has he ever ridden a horse yeah he's ridden many horse hes he loves horseback riding see and this is how you practice aloud now all these things that I tell you these structures it's up to you you can practice you know understanding them you know learning them but you can also practice saying them and then you'll be making the most of this I'm I'm telling you you'll be milking it like my books this book is the milk as you guys know I have a best-selling book it's called this book is the milk well the book the verb to milk in English is orat Right a cow but it's also to squeeze expr you say all right let's look at the next one to ride in a group all right so we're we're riding together in that car and you guys ride in this one okay let's look at it they rode together in the same car to the concert okay they rode together l l they rode together in the same car to the concert ask me did they did they ride together in the same car yeah they rode together in the same car and she was riding shotgun H this is for my highlevel students what did I just say and she was riding shotgun again we're going to take a look at all these idioms and all the phrasal verbs in the bonus episode and by the way if you want access you should join us on patreon.com Alberto Alonso there are over 300 of us that's right over 300 of us all together here and I want to send a shout out to all my patrons especially my Interstellar students Adrian Carman lenina Issa bako David Jose Maria and Edgard a big shout out to all of you and if you guys want to find out how you can get so much more content you can even be in classes with me all you have to do is go to patreon.com Alberto Alonso and I highly recommend it if you're learning English this is the final step to make sure you're getting the documents you're getting that extra class every week very useful class and the trans translations and if you're in our Interstellar level you're even in class with me so I'm going to make sure personally that you know these take a look all the information you need is on patreon.com Alberto Alonso and if you want a sample just let me know I'm easy to find okay uh all right so to ride shotgun by okay so a lot of times when we're going to the car especially when you're younger shotgun so to ride shotgun man you always ride shotgun well because I always call shotgun so to call shotgun it comes from the old days when they use covered wagons loses you call them I think and one person would be steering the horses no man and the other person would be riding with a shotgun in their hand just in case there were any Outlaws so to ride shotgun Isa it's a good way to remember it okay very very American I don't I know they understand it in England but I don't know if they say oh oh I called shotgun not you it just sounds very American but we'll look at more idiomatic expressions in the bonus part so to ride an animal to ride in a group to ride a vehicle whether it's motored or without a motor what about riding public transport it's a very common one as well we rode the subway we rode the bus we rode the light rail Metro Lio look at that light rail the tram right trambia is a tram we rode the tram to get to the museum ask me did you did you ride the tram to get to the museum Museum are you participating if you are great did you and did you did[Applause] you did you go did you ride did you find did you eat did you want same did you did you stays the same and that's really important every week we look at a different verb but the structures are kind of the same present present continuous past tense future I mean we look at the gamut the present perfect as well the most common tenses so you won't just know these words and they're synonyms and antonyms but you also know how to use them in the most common structures so that's why it's important that you repeat along with me so we rode the subway we rode the tram to get to the museum the next one is figurative usage and we'll look at this more in the bonus episode he tried to ride the wave of success after his first song right after his first hit song So to to ride I think you say the same thing no right to to to to make the most of what's happening and milk it so he tried to ride the wave of success after his first hit song ask me did heos did he try to ride the wave of success after his first hit song yeah he tried to ride the wave of success unfortunately he was just another on hit wonder a one hit wonder so to ride the wave to ride the wave of success again it makes sense right another one riding for pleasure on weekends I enjoy riding through the countryside now that can be in a car and a horse obviously the context will tell you everything but it's you know a nice relaxing one you know when you go for a ride it doesn't mean come on we're in a rush we have to go now no I'm gonna go for a ride so we ride for pleasure in fact we call it a joy ride I'm just GNA go for a joy ride Joy is f right so I'm going to go for a joy ride also it can mean to to rob a car as well they rob a nice car it's in the movie uh if you've seen the movie Ferris bu's day off I I think you call it toon when they steal the car they take it out for a joy ride okay Co to bring it for a joy right and as we'll see there are even some movies that have that name joy ride so ask me uh let's let's do third person does your sister does she does she your sister does your sister enjoy riding through the countryside yeah she loves riding through the countryside remember with enjoy a big big mistake I enjoy to ride no I enjoy riding okay so I enjoy riding through the countryside you can also say just the country that's fine context is key the next one riding with friends let's ride together to the party okay can I get a ride do you know this one can I get a ride Mayas can I get a ride with you can I get a lift it's another way to say this a ride or a lift lift can I get a lift to the center so let's ride together if you don't mind could you give me a ride how would you say would you mind would you mind giving me a ride or giving me a lift to the party would you mind would you would you mind would you mind giving me a lift would you mind giving me a ride okay now don't say would you mind riding me because then we're talking about the sexual connotation there yeah that's right hey I I needed to put some sound effect to wake you up there yeah so careful don't say can you ride me no can you give me a ride or can you give me a lift and if you guys anybody use if you use that uh app there's a taxi app and it's called lift and right will'll give you a lift all I love when you can learn English from applications from movie titles I mean pop culture is key and as you know we'll be taking a look at some examples from pop culture in the bonus episode also we said motorcycles he loves to ride his motorcycle on the open road he loves to yeah he loves toak he loves to ride his I don't say his I do say he he loves to he loves to ride his motorcycle on the open road ask me does he does he love to ride his motorcycle on the open road oh yeah he loves to ride his motorcycle on the open road and what about motorbike can you say motorbike I'm sure many of you were taught motorbike yeah if you're British Americans call it motorcycle we call it motorbike so just be aware they we understand each other motorcycle you can even say I love riding my bike on weekends so again context is key he loves to he loves to ride his motorcycle on the open road can you put it in the past tense leava is that how you say it the open road we say you know the not the city roads the open road so did he did he love to ride now that's without used to okay did he love to ride his motorcycle on the open road yeah he loved to ride it I'm almost going to used to out did he used to love to ride his motorcycle yeah he used to love to ride it but then he had an accident and now he hasn't ridden it in a long time he hasn't ridden it in a long time oh another usage of ride which I almost forgot also to ride someone is a okay it's a lot different if I say stop riding me and we're having you know uh intercourse or if I say stop riding me so again this is why we always need to listen to context context is key so that's uh that's most of the usages I think we looked at many different nouns we looked at a lot of different verb usages as well and as I said we'll look at some phrasal verbs and uh many many more cool uses of this verb let's take a look at some synonyms right now so to ride something well to sit on it right he he rode also we said to go on right he likes to go on the rides he likes to go on his motorcycle because they're not closed like a car he likes to go in the car right but with this we say he likes to go on rides the motorcycle one makes sense because you're not in anywhere okay so to sit on something to ride it right another one to mount something this m yeah I know we took that one right from you guys regular mounted right mounted also to sit on sit is an irregular verb sit on don't sit on that don't sit on that don't sit on the horse sit on no no sit on don't sit on he sat on the horse bado right sit sat sat he's always sat on that horse since he was a kid to sit on the next one to handle okay to handle something to handle handled it's a regular verb he handled it he rode it right he was riding the tractor he handled it he steered it man to handle to steer right in fact we have a steering wheel in a car do you know what it's called on the bike we have an episode on bikes what do you say the the part where you grab it in Spanish manat or something we say handlebars the handlebars so see it's all related we go to that word handle right and we can oh the handlebars there where you grab it where you steal Ste it right and the steering wheel is obviously in a car all right so motorcycles have handlebars cars have steering wheels the next one Journey we said enjoy your journey enjoy your trip enjoy the ride okay I know you guys are going to have a great time and the last one to Coast or to cruise okay they're both regular verbs so we add Ed or in the case of Cruz just a d he coasted down the hill remember the episode on roller coaster well roller rad to roll rad and to Coast is to move without applying more energy okay so if you think about the roller coaster what does it do it goes up the first Hill and it coasts through the rest of the track right it's coasting but also to Coast is to uh in a car just uh we were just coasting down the coast it's to goto right to Coast so if we if we apply it to a person man he coasted through high school okay e to coast and the next one I'm sure you realize it's very related and you recognize it not realize it cruise cruise control and Co that's called cruise control and when you're cruising when you're coasting you're going at the same Speed without much effort so again these are words you might have been familiar with but now you know how to use them and I like to look at that too if they're regular if they're irregular any kind of pronunciation things that may come up oh and fun fact a fun fact over here here the uh cruise control was created by a blind man yeah it was invented by a a blindman cruise control the button the function in your car and now we'll take a look at some antonyms before we hit the road Jack and don't you come back no to hit the road lardos the first one is to crawl so if you're riding it means you're moving if you're crawling it means you're moving really slowly man he was just crawling through the course and also it's what a baby does a baby crawls right gotad you say the next one is to Halt halt stop so you're riding and you halt in right you halt the next one oh he halted production of of the cereal because they found something dangerous in it they halted production F the opposite of ride the next one creep so I creep yeah or we've also got the radio head version I'm a creep I'm a wiir well to creep is to move really slowly and he creeped up to me Lo is the word you use in Spanish and that's why when somebody comes up to us that we don't like we say that that person is creepy that person is a creep he's creepy why because they don't they move really slowly and try to surprise you again if you look at the idea behind it it'll make much more sense it's not just a radio head song in context man we were creeping there when we got to Madrid at the end of the road trip that's very normal anybody who's ever come to Madrid there's always traffic coming in and out of Madrid the next one to settle they were riding around but finally they settled this is also dust dust settles it settles right also to settle is to be the first people to discover somewhere so the British uh colonists the what were they called the uh the um I can't even remember the word now the pilgrims Los peros right they settled the United States to settle and the last one to give up on somebody okay so if you're riding me right you right Alberto you got to do well on that exam I know stop riding me well to give up on is well I give up on you I'm not going to ride you anymore all right well we have come to the end of our ride my Amigos and I hope you're enjoying the ride so far and I hope you'll join us in the bonus episode of this week's FY[Music][Applause][Music][Applause][Music]
